Thresh's lantern shield

I don't know if you guys notice but sometimes it's frustrating that thresh's lantern does not shield you when you're playing as thresh and you use the lantern on yourself. Like when I have low health and I throw the lantern I still end up dying because someone attacks me before the lantern hits the ground and shields me and I end up dying and Dark Passage ends up going to cooldown. Anybody else experiencing this?
