Tips for landing Veigar stun?

MrBuffington··2 votes·7,172 views

Heyo,

So I recently picked up Veigar as a mage counterpick for my mid lane champion pool (Orianna for blind picks, Ryze vs. assassins), but I've been having a little trouble landing his stuns. I have E on normal cast (not quick cast), so I can judge where the edge of the stun is better, but I haven't been hitting them with the consistency that I would like before I bring Veigar into ranked. I know a lot of this is just me getting used to having one spell not smart casted, and getting used to the spell in general (it seems that the stun actually occurs at the outside edge of the range indicator and a little outside the range indicator, not centered on the edge of the range indicator as I would have thought), but just wondering if y'all had any tips for landing the stun besides simply practicing more.

Thanks!

EDIT: I've started smartcasting the stun; honestly been finding it easier in some respects (after learning the range from the range indicator), thanks for your help everyone!

Try smart casting it and just learning the spacing?

I find normal cast fucks me over more. I mean, I can learn the way that, say, Velkoz Q works why not Veigar E?

Veigar's E is significantly wider, only stuns on edge, and is much less forgiving if you miss.

I would do this with any other champion (in fact I've tried it with Veigar with little success), but Veigar's stun only really works at the very edge of the range indicator, instead of just being an AoE like most other spells. Smartcasting I can trap people inside the area no problem, but stunning gets very hit or miss, and much more difficult to plan things like stunning with the side edge of the spell, instead of always with the forward edge, etc.

EDIT: nvm, you were right, lol, I've been smartcasting all my spells on all my champions for a while now, and I feel like smartcasting just feels more natural to me now; I think a lot of my trouble was just getting used to not smartcasting one spell while smart casting the rest (since I heard from Scarra that it's generally smart not to smartcast E), but I think it's more applicable when you're not playing a lot of Veigar and therefore aren't used to the stun radius (like most pro players, not having Veigar in their main champion pool). I think a problem is that the range indicator isn't perfect for where the stun actually is, and I would get in my head too much and overthink how to stun the opponent in the heat of things that I would mess up my spell rotation a lot. I still don't have the stun down perfectly, but smartcasting or not I hit them with about the same frequency so maybe it'll just be better for me to get used to smartcasting it.

I use Quick Cast with a range indicator for Veigar for this reason. It does make hitting stuns more consistent. Otherwise, the stun itself is actually basically from the middle of the display to veeeeery slightly outside the circle; however, the stun can also be applied within the display because of the enemy champion hitboxes.

I don't know how you level Veigar either, but unlike other guides, I recommend actually putting in 2 points into the stun before maxing Q. If you have trouble getting off the whole combo, I'd even put a third point in the stun (though this does significantly lower his burst for two levels). This puts down the cooldown of the stun while giving you ample time to actually hit them with everything before the stun wears off.

EDIT: To clarify, max Q, but with Q at level 4 opt to put an extra point in stun rather than putting Q at level 5.

Honestly, I prefer to max Q last. Anyway, I generally found it easier to normal cast Veigar's stun so I could use it with more precision thanks to the target circle. The trick is to have the border of that targeting circle touching the target.

I've mostly been following probuilds from Faker or Scarra, etc, max Q first and E second. I need to get into the practice of casting W on the stunned target before Q, but for the most part I don't have trouble getting a full rotation off if I can land the stun.

Veigar is pretty passive so wait for the enemy to come to you to use E. They might try to run if they see your W sparkles

Should I be trying to trap them inside more or have them run into the outer edge? If I trap them inside, there's less chance for them to escape, but I've found it's easier to have them run into the edge when they're chasing.

You might already know this trick, but one thing I like to do vs melee champions who use gapclosers is, use the stun on where I'm standing. E.G. Talon is running towards me and I put the edge of my own stun on myself so when he jumps on he, he pretty much stuns himself.

interesting, I'll usually just cast it directly on myself (so i have protection on all sides) if I feel like I'm being dived on, thanks!

I haven't used Veigar much recently but what I remember from his stun is:

Laning- I used it to block cs (a lot) because it cracked me up. Aside from that, when you want to hold them away from turret- aim around them not on them that way they might run into it.

Ganking- like Jinx traps, use it to block escape routes or just pin em in.

Teamfights- again, the pin is great. Makes those skill shots so easy to land especially when your team knows you are about to use it.

General aim- if you want to pin them in, just E right on the character. If you want to stun, aim a teensy (bare millimeters) away from them. If they are running away, aim it that tiny bit behind them. If they are chasing, a bit in front. Stun is easy once you have the mental (not muscle) memory for run speeds and gap closers/openers.

=) hope I helped some and remember- practice.

Great team for Veigar btw (almost forgot) Veigar Jayce Fiora Nami Fiddlesticks. That one stun opens so many possibilities.

Thanks for your help! I've thought of using it to freeze lane before, but you're right that I do need practice.

This might sound odd but I went into bot games and learned the distance from the cursor icon to the edge of the stun so I could quick cast it. I rarely miss now and it's almost a point and click stun for me now.

Interesting, I'll give quick cast another try, thanks

Use smart/quickcast, no exception on Veigar. Get used to flicking your stun, because you're all about doing things quickly, precisely, and safely, or else you're killed as fast as you can kill. All about experience.

Yea I've started getting the hang of just smartcasting it, thanks for your help! Still need practice, but it's much easier to burst someone when everything is smartcast and you don't have to worry about left clicking somewhere in the middle of a spell rotation
