Essence Reaver: Too little, too late.

The5lacker··20 votes·4,014 views

So Essence Reaver's been out a few months now, and pretty much everyone has come to the same conclusion and is asking the same questions: Why does a mana sustain item need a BF Sword? What kind of lunatic threw this idea together? Who is obsessed with making it a Bloodthirster replacement? Where does the mana sustain or CDR for this item even come from?

So yeah. ER has kinda...flopped. The high cost, the uncooperative built path, the outrageously high combine cost, the fact that it's just a BT with a few tweaks, nobody cared about it. It doesn't fill the niche it was designed to fill. It has failed as an item.

So what do we do with a failed item? We fix it. We fix it until it works. And we start by taking apart the problem and addressing it. Essence Reaver builds out of BT. That's bad. Replace it with a Pickaxe. Drop the AD to 60. Drop the cost. More easily available. Good to go. Essence Reaver gains CDR and mana sustain out of the ether. That's bad. Add in a Forbidden Idol. Grant 10 Mp5. Stats don't come out of nowhere. More easy to assemble. Good to go.

Essence Reaver - Pickaxe (875g) + Vampiric Scepter (800g) + Forbidden Idol (700g) + 475g = 2850g + 60 Attack Damage + 10 Mana Regeneration + 10% Lifesteal + 10% Cooldown Reduction - Unique Passive - Restores mana on-hit equal to half of the health restored from Lifesteal.

EDIT: Been thinking, would be better to further its distance from the niche BT feels so it can be made more slot efficient, so re-reworking it.

Essence Reaver

  • Vampiric Scepter (800g) + Forbidden Idol (700g) + Dagger (450g) + Dagger (450g) + 600g = 3000g
  • 40 Attack Damage
  • 40% Attack Speed
  • 10 Mana Regeneration
  • 10% Lifesteal
  • 10% Cooldown Reduction
  • Unique Passive - Restores mana on-hit equal to 5% of the physical damage dealt.

What about positioning it as a pick for the caster/carry instead of as a straight substitute for ANY carry? Give it an easier build path out of two strong mid-game items, and make it a late game powerhouse for carries who rely heavily on spells. Something like this:

Aether Blade Sapphire Crystal + Longsword + X Gold

+200 mana +15 AD 10% CDR *Unique Passive: *Physical damage returns 2%-6% of physical damage as mana (half on AoE abilities).

Essence Reaver Aether Blade + Brutalizer + X Gold

+250 mana +60 AD +20% CDR +25 Armor Penetration

Unique Passive: Physical damage returns 2%-10% of damage as mana (half on AoE abilities).

What this gives us is a decent early game item for mana sustain, and a nice build-path for the caster carry (Aether Blade into Brutalizer is actually some really solid early game power, although you lose out on HP sustain). It works with assassins who need mana as well because the mana regen is based on physical damage dealt instead of just on auto-attacks, meaning that Talon and Pantheon and Kha'Zix might also be interested in it.

Late game it gives a pretty solid chunk of AD, along with some wonderful damage boosters for the most caster-focused ADCs: the 20% CDR and high armor penetration are really appealing, especially since Lucidity Boots and offense masteries will allow you to net 40% with just this item, and a number of assassins and caster marksman would really value that.

Whether or not they'd value it ENOUGH to give up the lifesteal and the 20 damage that another item could get them is a different story. That said, I think if you priced this competitively you'd actually have a really solid item choice.

Earl Eulrich3 votes

I really like the idea...splitting it in a Tier 1 and an upgrade would make a lot more sense.

Talon Silverwing2 votes

Yeah all the item really needs is a decent tier 1 item for laning.

RedtheCrimson2 votes

Completely agree. It needs it's own unique items to build into, and have the Tier system to transition from early/mid game to late game.

Lv99 Red Chocobo2 votes

I think it still needs the life steal to help it along though. as good as it can be, extra lifesteal helps it be an early item to build. Waiting until late game to complete it doesn't make a lot of since if you're heavily dependent on abilities. The life steal gives the extra sustain for the laning phase.

Deep Terror Nami7 votes

Less AD is good for which ADC exactly?

The5lacker13 votes

Not being able to buy it during the actual laning phase is good for which ADC exactly?

Deep Terror Nami4 votes

It's literally the cheapest of the comparable ADC items. Are you going to now argue that the rest are worse off, or are you going to concede that you don't have a point here? You can't have it both ways.

The5lacker6 votes

Cheapest doesn't mean best, and it doesn't mean that GETTING MANA SUSTAIN PAST THE POINT WHERE MANA SUSTAIN IS RELEVANT ISN'T A TERRIBLE DESIGN DECISION.

Are you going to actually have a point here? You can't just take up space with useless, irrelevant factoids.

Deep Terror Nami6 votes

You seriously have some rage issues you need to deal with before you interact with other people.

Orbv9 votes

Do you realize that several ADC's have horrible mana issues AFTER the laning phase? It's great on Ashe, Sivir, Corki. It's not intended to get as a first or even second item.

The5lacker5 votes

If you're having mana issues on Ashe late game, turn off your Q for farming for the love of god.

As for Sivir and Corki, why would they not want their mana sustain a tad earlier, again? Because you didn't come up with any actual counterpoint. You just said "There are people for whom mana is relevant by the time ER can be purchased." Which is true...and also irrelevant, because 3 champions is just about 2.5% of all champions in the game, and that means we have an item which is less relevant than an energy item.

YouLostMe2 votes

They definitely would not be able to afford this earlier. You need to drop almost 3k gold to pick this version of the item up, people will just ignore it and build triforce, shiv, etc.

Knight Devout3 votes

Well, actually, for some ADC, or AD laners, the extra damage from spellcasting that comes from a forbidden idol could very well translate in a lane victory or objectives control. They reason they don't build it is that Forbidden idol, or any mana item except manamune are irrilevant for them. If they really have mana issues , perhaps even a Sheen is a better option, as it still adds damage and builds into trinity later on. However, 60 AD , 10 LS, 10% CDR and mana regen? That essentially becomes a valid alternative to Botrk for champions who scale well with IE and crits (35 extra AD trumps the Botrk on hit below 1000 health), and the cdr/mana regen is still a damage increase for any spellslinger.

YouLostMe1 votes

Getting forbidden idol before the pickaxe and vamp scepter is highly highly unlikely, since even AD casters have most of their power locked up in auto-attacks and AD ratios. The extra spam you get from idol is likely to seriously lose out to lower life steal, lower autoattack damage, and lower AD ratios, so you're either building like a normal carry and getting pickaxe/scepter or you're killing your ability to trade so you can spam a little more often.

Knight Devout2 votes

but forbidden Idol is only 700 gold. If you return with 1600 gold you can afford both FI and PickAxe. And with 2250 gold BF+Forbidden idol. Is not THAT expensive to push back their builds, it just lowers their AD ratio, but early game most of the damage comes from spells base damage anyway.

YouLostMe1 votes

And with 1600 gold your enemy gets twice as much attack damage and begins to force trades. Your power spike at 2250 is cheaper than the BF/pickaxe by ~300g I think, but you also have nothing to build into immediately afterwards.

If you don't think it's expensive, I seriously recommend testing this in bot games and watching how your DPS changes. Losing out on autos and ratios is a big deal, especially when you're level 4-6.

Knight Devout1 votes

Well, actually with bots is the only place where BF sword is more effective. See, bots don't actually dodge spells, or force you to use spell defensively, so you waste less mana. Sure, you have 20 AD less, and that's huge for autoattacks, but in term of AD ratios that's not that big, and the extra damage you can land with the extra mana can easily compensate. Just an example.

Forbidden Idol restores 480 mana over 5 minutes. For a Pantheon, those are 10 extra casts of Spear Shot. Which are 2250 physical damage. The loss in damage from AD ratio is 280. And 20 for each AA landed, ofc.

YouLostMe1 votes

My friend, you need more experience with bots. Bots have an automatic spell-detection system that makes them dodge skill shots quite well. They also can go very aggressive if they are even close to executing you, and their instant reaction times make defensive spellcasting and sustain very important. They are also super easy to trick and gank, but that's another story.

In your first example the player has 20 AD less, which can translate to 30 less damage for AD casters like Graves and Varus (the ones who want ER). That's really big when shoving a lane, stealing objectives, or trying to get that last bit of damage to secure a kill.

Your example of Pantheon really doesn't work. You need to sit around for 5 minutes without going too low on HP, you must save all that mana only for spear shots (no low-damage jumps), you need to be incredibly conservative with casting to last 5 minutes, a large amount of spear damage is lost to CS'ing, and you're still losing trades so you're less likely to be able to hang around for 5 minutes. A pantheon will be much better off picking up raw AD and ArPen so he can assassinate like he's supposed to.

EDIT: Damn, I forgot to mention the lost sustain and objective pressure.

Knight Devout3 votes

It doesn't matter if you are losing 20 or 30 damage from AD ratios when you are throwing 5 extra spells that you wouldn't have used otherwise and that hit as hard as 230-300 damage EACH.

Especially for shoving a lane. Especially for objective pressure. The only thing that would be a drawback is that you are losing damage against turrets, but even then, having extra spell casts make your waveclear much better.

Of course in a 1v1 All-in Brutalizer would deal more damage. That's why sustain is sustain, and damage is damage. The fact that a champion loses equal trades when one has picked sustain and his opponent damage is fair, as long as the first champion ends up with more mana to continue harassing while his enemy has only autoattacks to farm and keep the lane. Anyway, check the other iteration made by The Djinn , introducing a mid tier item building into Essence Reaver.

YouLostMe3 votes

It really does matter because those extra spells come 9 seconds later and the 30 damage comes right now. When you are trying to shove a wave to the tower, you don't want to wait 9 seconds to get your second buckshot. You want to kill all the creeps, then pressure an objective. And since that's such an important part of the game, you can see why picking up FI is so bad for it.

The only thing FI has going for it is long-term waveclear, which provides very little benefit at levels 4-6 (when you get it).

A brutalizer also provides better HP sustain if you have a Dblade, the ability to win trades in any scenario (1v1 or otherwise), better kill potential when roaming, and stronger harassment from individual spells. And remember that having high mana for repeated harass isn't useful if your HP is too low to in range anyways, which is what's likely to happen if you stick around losing trades for 5 whole minutes. That spear shot is basically begging someone to use their gap-closer on you.

The middle-ground ER substitute that Djinn and many other have proposed is actually reasonable. This iteration is just crazy wrong, which is why I commented.

YouLostMe1 votes

@MasterOfTheOrder: You seem to be confused as to what we were actually talking about when I made that comment. I recommend reading my posts to figure out the context.

The5lacker2 votes

2850g is apparently not more affordable than 3200g, and adding a mana sustain component also wouldn't help at all. ... Wat.

YouLostMe3 votes

Yes, kind of like how you don't get a huge damage spike by picking up IE components, you don't get the huge mana spike by picking up ER components. If you think a player will actually rush his forbidden idol first OR you think they're going to have sufficient sustain from a single faerie charm, you are in for a terrible surprise.

EDIT: Oh jeez I didn't notice the new suggested build. This version of ER is twice as bad as before, just for different reasons.

The5lacker3 votes

Mana sustain =/= Massive damage spike

You are a god damned moron. How is giving people MORE OPTIONS a problem? You don't have to buy and hold item components individually for five minutes. Adding Forbidden Idol to the recipe, even keeping all of the stats and cost it has now, WOULD NOT DELAY THE ITEM AT ALL OR FORCE PEOPLE TO BUILD ANYTHING ANY DIFFERENTLY AND IF YOU THINK OTHERWISE YOU ARE A MENTAL INVALID.

Additionally, spending 700g for a chunk of Mp5 and CDR is a pretty good deal that doesn't set anyone back. Because it's 700g. It costs less than a Vamp Scepter. It costs less than a Pickaxe. It costs less than upgrading your damn boots. Forbidden Idol is cheap and making it at the very least an option only serves to HELP, not hinder.

ER has a combine cost over 1k. Explain to me how replacing some of that cost with an actual item is a detriment to anyone.

YouLostMe2 votes

I have at no point said that mana sustain was the same as a massive damage spike, so it's kind of weird that you're stating that. But at least you figured that out so I guess that's good? If you were confused on that topic, I don't think you should be posting ER fixes...

The point is that rushing FI is not going to happen. Players will build ER the way they build IE, BT, and PD -- namely, they will buy the most important item components first if they possibly can. Those are (at the time of my posting) vamp scepter and pickaxe, and FI will only be picked up in incredibly niche cases where they have 700g for FI but not enough for the combine cost and can't spend the money on more useful things like consumables and boots. I have actually not mentioned anything about DELAYING THE ITEM AT ALL so it's kind of weird that you think I did say anything about that, but perhaps if you can't read you shouldn't be telling other people they have mental issues...

Spending 700g is actually a terrible deal and will set any AD character back. Because it's 700g. It stops you from buying a vamp scepter unless you only have 700-799g. It stops you from buying a pickaxe unless you only have 700-874g. It stops you from buying boots. Forbidden Idol is expensive and making it an option serves as a noob trap which is bad, not good.

The current ER isn't really in discussion here. If you took the current ER and kept the buildpath that wasn't insane, but subtracted 700g from the combine cost and dropped FI in there, I wouldn't have as much of a problem with it. But you substituted a BF sword for a pickaxe + FI, which is the same price as a BF sword, but in almost every way crappier.

The5lacker2 votes

So there's absolutely no reason NOT to do it and none of your comparisons mean anything, got it.

YouLostMe1 votes

My comparisons have thus far shown that the mana sustain doesn't comes earlier unless playing severely suboptimally or in incredibly niche circumstances, so when you said that your version of ER provided "mana sustain a tad earlier" you were fairly wrong. That is the entire point of this comment thread, and so far it flows without rebuttal. If you were confused by that, I recommend re-reading my posts.

MasterOfTheOrder1 votes

Your comparisons? Have you been playing against people, or bots?

Mana sustain on pretty much ANY adc is a spike in damage.

YouLostMe1 votes

You seem to be entering this conversation without actually reading the discussion. I recommend reading my posts (the ones here and in the other thread you commented on) in order to understand my comparisons and why they are true. Even the OP has admitted that mana regen does not equate to a damage spike.

Good for the OP, and good for you. I don't like ER, and don't use it because there are better choices. However, having the opportunity to spam your skills CAN equate to damage spikes (Varus, Cait, Jinx etc..)

YouLostMe2 votes

@MasterOfTheOrder: Ah, so the problem is you don't know what a damage spike is. A damage spike is where a given instance of damage increases. In LoL, that is caused by ability ratios (AD, AP, mana, usually) or increased base damage when using an ability. For example, Varus's Q deals 15 / 70 / 125 / 180 / 235 (+ 160% AD), where the numbers with slashes are the base damage and the 160% AD is the AD ratio. So increasing the rank of the spell or increasing the AD ratio gives him a "damage spike".

Varus's Q also costs mana and has a cooldown. Getting FI increases your mregen and decreases your cooldowns, so he can spam Q more often, but it doesn't increase his damage. That is why it doesn't provide a damage spike.

Pafos7 votes

what no, who would fucking want that, its good because it has the stats of a bt. It works fine with graves

Fisk6 votes

60 ad sucks a fatty. They tried it, it doesn't work. What must happen is combine cost is lowered (probably to around~400-500 instead of the about 800 it costs now, then there is an item that is made of forbidden Idol+Vamp Scepter (Forbidden Scepter? Vampiric Idol?) with a 200 gold combined cost, then you add that into a B.F. sword and get the final essence reaver that gives you 10% lifesteal 10%cdr, 80 AD, 10 mana regen/5, and 2-7% missing mana per strike. Voila, problem solved. You have a good early/mid game AD mana item that builds into a strong end game option.

Fisk3 votes

This would cost 1700 for the mid game Forbidden Idol (700) + Vamp Scepter (800) + 200=Vampiric Idol. Then + 1550 for BF Sword and 250 For combined cost. Making the item cost 3500 (identical to bloodthirster since that's it's non-mana counterpart) and making it decent at all points in the game... If you guys like this idea please make a post about it... I would love for essence reaver to be a good item... and it needs a mid game option...)

The5lacker2 votes

Explain to me, with your hypothetical solution, why anyone would buy BT then?

You cannot have two items occupy the same niche and then have one item do that and then some other things. That's not good design. One of the items will always be strictly better than the other in every circumstance. If that's the case, why even make them two separate items?

Mana sustain should be a trade off. Losing 20 AD sucks, but if you get all of the mana you'd ever need at a low premium, it'd be worth it for asserting mid-game dominance.

Champion Skin3 votes

The thing is that the there would almost only be one class/role who would buy the item as it is now (or with 20 less ad) and that is Marksmen/ADC + Jayce maybe And that is because most other AD casters are burst and just wants as much damage as possible and often don't care much for lifesteal or mana steal And ADC would more or less never build it if it had 20 less ad since their role is to deal as much damage as possible The only way it would be worth it to get this item then is if you really needed the CDR for escape ability or ult and or if you are so vunreable that you have to use your abilities to deal damage as getting in auto attack range is to dangerous

In the end if BT and Essence Reaver had the same cost it wouldn't change much other then that some more ability reliant ADC's might get Essence Reaver... BT would still offer more safety against burst with the shield if it is up and against sustained damage with higher lifesteal Mana is good but is it better then health? Mana (mana on-hit) + CDR Vs Shield and health (lifesteal)

Teridax684 votes

Adding a item 3114 to the recipe would have the mana restoration and CDR make a lot more sense, but I don't think it entirely solves the item's problems: item 3508 is made to solve mana issues on AD champions, but whereas marksmen are mostly focused on late-game power, mana problems are most prevalent during laning and aren't really an issue later on. The current Essence Reaver falls flat because it doesn't provide its bonus in time, but the Essence Reaver you're suggesting is slot inefficient compared to any item 1038 item, particularly item 3072 (the mana regen won't carry well into the late game for marksmen, and having the mana restoration scale with lifesteal in general and in such a way is redundant). Seeing as they're competing for the same niche (sustain), the Essence Reaver you propose would still be underpicked.

I think the idea here would be to have the item build from a path in a manner similar to item 3153, with an easy build path leading to an AD-oriented mana sustain item (Idol is a great item, but on most AD champions, even casters that benefit a lot from the CDR, it'd delay their damage output too much to be taken over other items at similar prices), which would then build up to a slot-efficient Essence Reaver that, on top of the mana sustain, would have an effect that would ensure late-game slot efficiency, enough for it to rival the Bloodthirster but with enough of a tradeoff to not be mandatory on every marksman.

The5lacker3 votes

I've actually been considering shifting it to 40 AD + 40% AS over a flat AD, keep it from occupying the same niche as BT which would allow it to be made more slot efficient.

I'd like to remind you the definition of a TRADE OFF, though. Yeah, they'd have to delay their damage if they want an early Forbidden Idol. But they don't HAVE to buy it. That's the beauty of the component system.

Sire Hippington5 votes

A lifesteal item with ad and as, that really wouldn'T fill a similar niche as an already existing item...o wait, we haveitem 3153 !

Also, why would i want that item? as an ad-caster, i want ad, cdr and arpen, not as. As an AA-focused champ, i don'T need mana nor cdr. So who exactly would want it?

Also, with the curretn BT giving twice as much lifesteal and the shield, it obviously fills a diffrent niche than the cdr+mana from Essenc Reaver. Essence reaver would shine on casterlike carrys, BT gives far more use to AA-reliant carrys due to the high sustain it offers, and it would be an option for survivabillity, as the shield mostly means ~400aditional hp.

So u have the choice between some healthsustain, some mana sustain and cdr, or huge health sustain and shield, both offering pros and cons. therefore i don't see BT and ER occpying the same niche. They are similar, but still offer enougth unique power to alow decisionmakeing. Just like locked, Banshies and SV, all give a similar amount of mr and health but different aditional effeckts allowing choices to be made.

The5lacker3 votes

ER vs BotRK is Mana sustain vs. Health shredding, two very different niches.

ER vs BT is Mana and Health sustain vs Health sustain. The same niche.

"AD casters" don't exist. They're a myth. There are no AD casters who don't want AS and who use Mana other than maybe, MAYBE Pantheon, who wouldn't even use ER anyways no matter what stats it has. But you know who wants AS, CDR, and health and mana sustain? Lucian. Sivir. Ashe. Jayce. Potentially even Twitch, Vayne, Jinx, and Corki.

Teridax682 votes

There can definitely be a tradeoff to the item while still allowing for a smooth damage curve. item 3144 , for example, is an item that's awesome to buy and gives a ton of good stats, plus a great active, but sacrifices about 20 AD for that slow and sustain. Similarly, if you had an item that gave you 25 AD and 10% CDR, plus the mana restoration active, at a price similar to that of Cutlass, you'd end up with similar tradeoffs (a lot less than a item 1038 's worth of AD for a comparable amount of gold in exchange for other goodies).

BastionKross3 votes

I think this is the right idea. Forget a forbidden idol, even it makes sense stat-wise. You need a new item that sits at the halfway point and actually helps with mana costs before the full item build but also doesn't completely sacrifice damage at the same time. Something with AD and mana regen both at least.

Earl Eulrich4 votes

mh, the AS-sucks - it should be an Item for Ad-Casters that want to hurt with abilities, not for some carries that want to tickle s.o. to death with Autoattacks...so get rid of the daggers, pack a pick-axe in and tune it back to 80ad and it would be fine.

The5lacker3 votes

"AD Casters" (which don't exist) according to your definition don't autoattack, so why would they want a mana restoration item that restores mana WHEN THEY AUTOATTACK?

Sire Hippington4 votes

he didn'T say ad-casters don'T AA, but they don'T rely on AAs as much and profit more form stuff that boosts their abillitys. Sure they can use as, but ad definitly is more valuable for them.

The manarestore on AA especially helps at sustaining in between fights rather than infdight for those, and with the flat-manaregen added it would realy help the item as it would offer better sustain to ad-casters, especially non adc ad-casters.

The5lacker3 votes

So explain to me why an AD caster would want Essence Reaver over Muramana. "AD Casters" don't benefit from Lifesteal. "AD Casters" would only use the mana restore on-hit out of combat. So why wouldn't they just want the Mp5 and flat Mana from Muramana? Why do you think that Essence Reaver isn't explicitly designed for AUTOATTACK FOCUSED champions as its mana restoration is tied to AUTOATTACKS?

Sire Hippington4 votes

why wouldn'T a ad-caster want lifesteel? sure, some spellvamp would be great but there is no spellvamp for ad, so the only option for sustain is lifesteal. And the big difference currently is 80ad + 10%cdr compared to ~60ad and no cdr, and most ad-casters have aoe-skills and therefore don'T realy gain burst from the toggle(which drains mana extremly fast), and ER doesn'T need u to either run around with a tear(700g non combat stats) or a not stacked muramana(even less ad and no toggle).

if muraman would be an better item more suited for ad-casters, i wouldn'T mind essence reaver changed to fit more AAreliant chmpions with mana isues. But most of those are bruisers, so changeing the managain to a %missing mana or a flat value would probably help more as they deal less AA damage as they also need to built alot tankiness

The5lacker2 votes

If AD Casters autoattack enough to benefit from Lifesteal they aren't casters.

You can't come up with a coherent argument. AD Casters benefit from Lifesteal but not Attack Speed. That's a stupid, nonsensical statement. Either they benefit from both, or neither. Either they autoattack plenty, or they don't autoattack at all.

And by "they" I mean, like, Pantheon. And maybe Jayce (who has an ability that grants him a huge burst of AS for three attacks, I might remind you.)

Sire Hippington3 votes

to quote my self:

Sure they can use as, but ad definitly is more valuable for them.

they benefit from as, but not nearly as much as they benefit from ad.

Either they autoattack plenty, or they don't autoattack at all

yea, the world is black and white and if u don'T go full AAmode, u don'T use them at all. on talon for example, i use AA+Q and then eitehr retreat or if the enemy is low ii chase him down. The AA+Q does profit from Lifesteal and mana steal, but not from as. if i'm low with talon(or anny other ad-caster) i clear minons with AAs to lifesteal. Just as the manasteal, it'S not that great as incombat heal, but the sustain between fights is very usefull. most ad-casters mix in a cuple of AAs in theri combo befor they retreat and wait for cds(ranged ad-casters obviously can use AAs more freely). AS is not great(usefull but not great) for a cuple of hits, it's great for sustained attacking, which ad-caster only do if they have a clear advantage and know their enemy can't fight back.

No one says as is a totally wasted stat on an ad-caster like it would on most ap-casters, but ad is simply way better than as for those champs

p.s. Jayce huge burst off as(actually MAX-AS for 3 hits) is exactly the reason why he doesn'T want AS from items. He gets no use of AS for those 3 hits as he already is at max, but each of those hits scales with 1.3 ad, so attckdamge boosts the damge of those 3 hits alot.
