Bug? these are just his overbuffs

I think maybe he was suggesting that the damage was so high that it must be a bug, and therefore should be reported elsewhere. Pretty clever. :)

It is not a bug, for what it's worth. We're closely watching his performance and will decide if he needs a micropatch before the weekend.

When playtesting him, we settled on his optimal build being a 1-2 AP items into a tankier build. Full AP was tested but in competitive games with similar skilled players (our playtest team) it was very volatile and had less success. Think it's yet to be seen which is the best way to play him for pure winning's sake. It was certainly intended to be a buff for players that wanted to be aggressive but it's possible we went to far in letting him blow people up. Winds of War may not be able to carry so much of his offensive output.

You are closely watching this???? Do you not test this crap before you put it out? You screwed up my streak in ranked. Stop doing ridiculous crap during the season. At least, if you do change something. Limit it to normal's somehow so we can figure it out and it doesn't destroy a series.

Whether it's a good PBE or bad PBE, the PBE is not good for balance purposes outside of really insane and obvious outliers. The PBE is a very small pool of players compared to the normal servers, so majority of balance is discovered within the first patch of release. Many people have suggested that champions should be restricted to Normals for at least a week after release, but Riot hasn't really publicly commented on that possibility. \

JJI7442 votes

I've said this myself, a few times. But I think in this case, Galio's damage output does fall under the extreme outlier case. There is no excuse for letting a 60% max HP damage ability go live. And that is with a reasonably tanky build.

Just for comparison, a target with 400 MR will still take more %damage from that Galio Q than a Silver bolts proc.

What I'm translating all of this as is "I'm going to attack you for actually responding to feedback that we have on this champion". Honestly, it's comments like these that the Boards are viewed by a number of people as

  1. A toxic environment for gameplay
  2. A difficult environment for Rioters to engage in criticism/negative views

I understand you're emotional about this, but you need to tone it down.

But i really like this galio change but that doesnt change that they have a section to detect this stuff and it almost nearly never does. that isnt attacking riot. if their shit is shit tell them its shit else they wont know its shit and continue to do shit. sure every one wants to see nice stuff but you get payed at your JOB to go through ALL of the stuff nice or not.

A lot of bullshit gets through your playtesting.

Maybe there is a problem when something is volatile and you should raise it as a concern to the design team.

Like do you think players want to deal with it even if it technically doesn't consistently win games all the time?

I mean at this point it's pretty much common knowledge that Riot just flat out ignores suggestions from the PBE or from their "playtesters".

For fugg's sakes. I was just browsing forums and saw the threads about Galio's Q. I took him in a normal as a support and built full AP. By the end of the game I had about 930 (sold shoes, and had elixir) and his Q did something along the lines of 530.5+88% of enemies' max HP.

That. Is. Ridiculous. To. The. Point. Of. Being. Obscene.

And I laugh in the face of their ridiculous counterpoint of "lol but no survivability" considering that the magic damage mitigation on his W also SCALES WITH AP and I had about 88% of that, plus 44% of physical damage mitigation.

W flash, E, Q. Are you having fun yet?

Been playing this game so long I am convinced that Riot's balance team is as much a myth as unicorns. It's probably just some unpaid intern in a basement with cobwebs hanging all over the place doing the balancing on a Commodore 64.

The fuck...

DeathBurst3 votes

Well, the unpaid interns must be at least good enough so that you stayed for "so long". Sooo, not that bad.

TheOnlyJoe5 votes

The Q damage is higher than 500. Way higher, that's just most likely the tornado overtime damage

The initial flat damage is about ~1000 with 900AP.

So you do 1000 damage + 500 over 1.5 seconds and 88% max health over 1.5 seconds. GG

Meep Man10 votes

On the other hand, a ton of PBE suggestions are really bad.

Example: Juggernaut Rework Skarner on Release Believed to be stupidly underpowered on PBE, so Riot buffed him slightly on PBE. Turned out he was probably balanced when he was first put on PBE and the buffs given to him sent him into being stupidly overpowered (Im talking a 60% win rate).

zero3564 votes

Counter Point: juggernaut Darius release not being nerfed despite PBE feedback Some of it is stupid, but, barring the stuff that is just clearly stupid, there's more good suggestions than bad

RiotSkarnye West32 votes

Hey all,

As the playtester (no longer) who presided over the Skarner changes, this is exactly why the PBE is not a great place for balance feedback.

Darius was perceived as OP and was OP. Skarner was perceived as weak as shit and was most definitely not. I think he hit 63% in Korea, because that number still haunts my dreams.

The matchmaking on PBE is weak because the number of players is low, and with new content it's hard to judge power because people haven't yet learned how to play as or against it.

That is not to say there is no introspection as to the root cause of something releasing with such an unhealthy pattern as current Galio and how to avoid such releases in the future, merely that PBE feedback is not a consistent solution to that problem.

No. This excuse makes no sense when the changes are ridiculous even on paper. You don't even need to load up a game to know that these Galio changes are dumb.

SuperLuigiLXIV23 votes

This.

It takes exactly ZERO playtime to know something like Galio's Q is stupidly overtuned as is.

It's worse by far than Nidalee's spear ever was. Remember that? Remember how people were complaining because they dodged 19 out of 20 spears and the one that hit destroyed them?

This is an AoE version of that that hits HARDER.

How? How does one possibly justify that ratio number even make it to the TESTING PHASE?!

Lord Takason2 votes

I play a game, go 0/9 to my lane, but when i have 3 items I throw out Qs until the enemy team gets hit by one and they have to recall.

That's not fun as the person against it, and it's funny but not fun as the person playing it.

maybe this issue should be looked at? maybe every once in a while the pbe account could just copy the mmr from the player's main account to try and get better matches. maybe IP/XP rewards for playing games should be transferred back to the players' main accounts as if they were playing a normal game on the main servers?

CrazyMLC6 votes

Playtesting may be inconsistent, but spreadsheets never lie! I'm certain the current numbers on Galio's Q would look problematic if you compared them against similar spells from other ap bruisers, or just mages in general, at different ap values.

Jordan Ritchie3 votes

I don't understand how that is a valid argument if playtesters will be fewer than the amount of users playing on the PBE? Yes the playtesters are there to do diligence and make sure the game is balanced, but as mentioned above they were looking for the optimal build and are not looking at the extremes on any end of the spectrum. Which is why we are here.

And as for my thoughts, screw balance, yolio the golem, full ap is dank.

AMYS GRAVE38 votes

As the playtester (no longer) who presided over the Skarner changes, this is exactly why the PBE is not a great place for balance feedback.

No, Skarner WAS weak on the PBE, was overbuffed right before the thread closed, and there wasn't enough time to gather more feedback on him before it went live. That had nothing to do with the quality of PBE games or any inherent problems with feedback from the PBE. 63% KR winrate skarner had nothing to do with PBE at all but was a result of insufficient testing.

Skarner went on the PBE on 8/4 to negative feedback because he was weak. http://www.surrenderat20.net/2015/08/84-pbe-update.html#more

Overbuffs to Skarner came out 8/6. http://www.surrenderat20.net/2015/08/86-pbe-update.html#more

The PBE thread was closed on 8/7 and no further feedback was taken into consideration, https://boards.pbe.leagueoflegends.com/en/c/champions-gameplay-feedback/d2bmpMif-skarner-pbe-changelist-and-feedback-thread

Allong with some small nerfs on 8/7. http://www.surrenderat20.net/2015/08/87-pbe-update.html#more

But the PBE thread had already been closed. If you had listened to your PBE testers they would have (and some did try to) give you the feedback that he was too strong after the buffs. (i would link the threads created by PBE players but thinking about filtering and searching from the PBE boards 2 years later gives me a headache)

Stop trying to silence the feedback from your PBE players by bringing up an example that they weren't given time to speak up about. Skarner came out too strong because you shut down communications with your PBE testers too soon, not because of the quality of the balance feedback given.

I am Razgriz10 votes

Wow, someone else finally making some sense around here about the Skarner issue. (I have a lot to say about it myself)

Teridax685 votes

Thank you so much for this. It is very rare that a poster comes up with receipts as detailed as these, and this really does ground the whole debacle in fact. If the issue of "PBE knows balance" comes up again, your post is what I'll be quoting.

As someone who had tested intensively during the Juggernaut Update, I also remember Skarner and Garen feeling weak as shit for the longest period of time, and the whole narrative of those champions being overbuffed purely because of PBE feedback always struck me as hollow, because PBE generally does give good qualitative feedback and, more often than not, is a snapshot of the reaction that can be expected on Live, particularly since there's so much communication in-between the two Boards. What you just showed is that PBE feedback was accurate, and that the real reason those champions ended up massively OP is simply because whoever balanced those champions at the last minute dropped the ball. In this sense, it is not especially surprising that we continue to see horrifically wrong balance changes emerge unaffected from the PBE, such as Galio's current buffs, and this whole mentality of blaming the players for daring to provide feedback has done nothing but detract from the actual issues at hand.

The fact that this kind of accusation not only turns out to be a lie, but is one that specifically disparages the playerbase, especially the testers who took the time to provide valuable feedback at a time of need, is what I find most disturbing. This is obviously not something that benefits the playerbase, but it is also not something that benefits Riot, as discouraging players from giving feedback is not going to make balancing the game any easier. Moreover, treating the players as if they were incompetent, when the real fault came from a Rioter (which was also likely an honest mistake), I think demonstrates a seriously unhealthy and oppositional mentality coming from Riot. This urgently needs to change if we are to avoid more egregious errors like the current Galio buffs, as well as the ensuing erosion of player confidence.

Shuyin1783 votes

Because you need testing to realize that a +3% per 100 AP on top of a .9 APR is ridiculous, I question whoever thought this was a good idea to begin with on top of the massive APR buffs on his passive and E.

TotalJerk2 votes

Galio is actually super easy to kill when he is going full AP.

Wasn't Skarner OP because you guys closed the feedback thread and STOPPED listening to feedback that he was too strong? Wasn't he OP because (I remember this distinctly, I was there) you guys implemented nearly all suggestions instead of some when it was clear only some should have been done?

I vividly remember when reading through suggestions and you guys saying what you were putting through and I remember even the comments that suggested them. You took too many at once. Without consideration that they were separate ideas. At all. It's retarded, but somehow it's our fault.

Quite honestly, I've never been this dissatisfied with Riot, and you fucking need to get punished for your lack of brain in handling the game. There are so many aspect of the patches I want to flame you for, such as Karma nerfs before ardent nerf, 3rd leblanc rework, again you show you're not competant in your own expertise, handling Lucian, Kindred, making new champs rather then updating Malphite, Aatrox, Udyr and many more, as if you're so obsessed with people buying RP to get new stuff that you don't actually give a FU£:D!G SH!T ABOUT THE GAME. Even as just a siege/poke tool it's quite strong. Tanks and bruisers aren't a threat at all and i kill a tristana at 300 AP with Q AA TLD procc. from like 3/4 of her health. OFc the squishy build has it's weakness the reason why i died like 13 times in the first game because they just three manned me permanently but i die as a tank there as well. I don't think you understand what volatile means. Sotere is saying that yes, the damage is high, but when you build too much damage into it, the success rate is lower and less consistent. Meaning it is risky. There is nothing wrong with this. It is no different than going full damage Jarvan. Either you blow someone up or you're useless. It is volatile.

Omega Fed Teemo2 votes

Then again Galio Q has a 6 second cd (or something like that) you dont need to get in melee range of someone to actually oneshot them with just the Q. Jarvan has to get in melee range and also he has to use several of his abilities, usually a full rotation of E -> Q into R.

Since Q is a quite good and safe skill (and makes up for most of his waveclear), maybe you could move his AP ratios buff to some other skill instead? Both E and his passive do AoE damage, but Galio also has to expose himself in order to trade with champs (whereas with Q he can shoot it from a safe distance)
