For the love of god, give people a way to check ping

373danvers··64 votes·2,751 views

I'm getting sick and tired of getting into a match only to lose when someone realizes their ping is so high that the game is unplayable.

If you're gonna keep giving out warning and bans for "Verbal abuse" Than you need to start warning people when their internet is ruining the game for others. The four other people on the team shouldnt have to suffer just because you forgot to reset your damn router.

This is the kind of shit that makes me despise this game most of the time. How dare someone call the feeder out for being bad when the kid constantly playing with 500+ ping gets to run free and ruin more matches.

"forgot to reset your damn router" hahahahahahahahahahahahahaha trust me I really wish it was that simple.

We need something that really simulates the activity during the most intense period of a game. I can have 50 on the loading screen, but as soon as team-fights start and there are a lot of simultaneous actions by all 10 players, it shoots up to 200 or 300.

Positive Poppy1 votes

Teamfights and other people playing don't have an affect on your ping, your ping is your connection to the riot servers. Your ping definitely should not be fluctuating during teamfights and other "intense" moments of the game. Your FPS on the other hand is susceptible to punishment in, again, those "intense" moments. There is a possibility I'm wrong, but I have never heard of ping fluctuating due to cpu and graphic demanding tasks.

DeathBurst2 votes

Team-fights and people actions have an effect on the number of packets sent to Riot server, which can saturate your connection and result in packet loss/higher ping. My FPS is perfectly fine. It's my connection to Riot server that is not efficient enough, and more importantly, not consistent over time.

I used to think this worked, but I quickly realized that a custom game doesn't show you your actual ping, most likely because you're playing by yourself and it's not really sending packets to other people and all that mumbo jumbo.

Even easier idea (originally mentioned by AngusBoomPants) is to check your ping by going into terminal/command on your computer (depends if you're on windows or mac) and type "ping 104.160.131.1"

This tells you whether or not your connection is good enough to play a game, and is tremendously faster than having to go into a custom game just to check.

pls yes, its not bad ping thats a problem however cuz if i know i always have 200 ping at home then i aint playing, but when i have 20 on average and it shoots to 200 for no apparent reason in the middle of the night when no one is using my internet I hate the game. if i had 200 ping constant i would just dc and never come back and take the loss and the reports but instead i get ping spikes and i try to play the entire game with shit plays here and there cuz my ping is so damn unstable for some reason. Maybe its not riots fault, idk, but dam at least let us somehow check ping in the client before we enter a match. Sheesh.

probably an isp prob or something but at least some sort of check that is based on actual servers and actually being in the servers with 9 other people would help the frustration a bit.

Sassmast3r5 votes

Well, it certainly isn't as easy as resetting our routers, but for those of us with ridiculously high, unpredicatable ping, it would be immeasurably helpful for us to turn on the game and see what our ping is to know if we should even bother playing a game, or wait until our abominations of ISPs stop throttling our ratchet internet connection :p

EddardStark841 votes

Play a normal. I've seen this posted like 5 times in this thread now. Is it really rocket science?

Sassmast3r4 votes

How is it less rude to screw over people playing a normal than those who are playing ranked?

Not only does high ping make the game unfun for us because our actions aren't recognized at the times they need to be, it screws over everyone else in the match because, for example, if I'm trying to shield you and you're about to die, you'll probably die before I can shield you _solely because of my ping. _

Regardless of whether or not people are playing casually or hardcore, it would be equally as frustrating if, as Vayne, I only needed one more kill to get a penta, but was about to die and my Nami had her heal up, but DID NOT use it because of her ping being too high to register it being cast.

What's that? Do something that makes sense? Riot spits in your face good sir, take your logic and shove it.

Pings also an excuse for bad play tbh most of the time

Ping is not the problem in my case. Its the crappy ping spikes that are probably shittier than constant mediocre ping.

every time my roommates load up a new YouTube clip on the ps4. something about it kills my ping for a min, but then normal while the video plays.

precambria1 votes

You are not alone.. this has been happening to a lot more people than is being let on as of the recent patches, the ping spikes resulting in packet buffering even for people who have a decent normal ping is a recent development that hasn't really been addressed opening by the support team.

Krigjer12 votes

Not really. A lot of times my home ping is 40 or lower but ingame I'm spiking to over 200. Sometimes it really is Riot's fault, not ours.

VoidStaresBack1 votes

I've had instances where I'm in a game just fine, my ping going between 15 and 20, and then suddenly it spikes up to 200... 300... 400... 500... and then straight out disconnects. It's a Riot specific problem, too, because everything else internet related works just fine. I have to change wifi networks to the one on the floor below me when that happens, which sucks, takes a couple minutes, and leaves my team a man down for the entire time.

lv99 godfather2 votes

I agree, like holy shit man I'm just sitting here enjoying a game of league 60-80 ping, winning and getting fed blah blah blah. Then it jumps up to a constant 300 and grows up to 500 at the wrong time and it really pisses me off when it happens cause i end up loosing and letting my team down when they need me the most.

because you test your Ping every time you queue up for a game

Supreme Senpai694 votes

I really hate when people are like "Damn ive been lagging all night." Bitch why are you in my game then!? Or "wow my internet is HORRIBLE." Well then don't play an internet game like this until you get better internet!! People need to check their damn ping before playing a game.

But also, sometimes I'll play four games and be fine but my 5th is randomly lag city the entire time with 3k ping. Makes zero sense to me. Riot should have a way to check it before a game. Maybe it should appear in champ select instead of the loading screen. That way you can dodge if it's super high

Sassmast3r3 votes

Well, you should really take two things into account:

First of all, when people say that, it means that yes, they've been lagging all day, and they sincerely apologize for any interference it might cause with you and your KDA, but they sure as hell don't have the patience to wait for their ISP to stop throttling their connection. I know this as I myself will typically tell people as the match is starting that my internet is not working properly tonight, it's out of my control, and I apologize in advance for any mistakes I make that are seemingly easy to avoid. We simply have tried everything to fix the issue, and have lost the patience anymore to try and fix it; unfortunately y'all just have to deal with it. If you want to be mad at someone, be mad at Riot and/or our ISPs making it impossible for us to enjoy the same things as everyone else does.

Secondarily, if you haven't been in the same boat as we have, then you cannot begin to fathom how frustrating it is. When every single action you make (which you and only you are responsible for) is delayed to the point where there are people you have the potential to save, but can't because of your connection, it sucks. It's not just frustrating for you, it pisses us off too.

I'm sorry on behalf of all of us with horrendous, unfixable internet connections that have caused any interference with your games, and I sincerely hope you recognize that it's terrible for us to endure as well, and most (if not all) of us simply cannot solve the issue without moving into more populated areas with more options of ISPs.

Supreme Senpai691 votes

If someone is genuinely sorry then I wouldn't be mad. But most people say something like "Damn this lag," or "this freaking internet sucks." As in, they're mad that it's ruining their game but don't care about the other 4's game even though it's their own fault. I've had laggy games (mostly cuz Riot, it happens rarely but it does happen) and there's simply nothing worse. If it was like that every game though, I wouldn't play league honestly. Or I'd just play bot games-- or hell even just normal games. Why put your team at a disadvantage in ranked, y'know? Setting everyone up for failure and frustration but it's supposed to be a game played for fun.

I do get it though, really. It just blows my mind when people say things like "Wow this is the 7th game tonight I've been lagging and it's making me lose my games." Play during times your internet is better, maybe stop playing after a couple games if you see it's horrible, definitely don't go into ranked, and apologize to your team instead of spamming cuss words at nobody in particular.

Sassmast3r2 votes

Yeah I understand. I certainly wouldn't play more than one game if my ping is high because it definitely won't fix itself by simply playing another game. I have no idea why anyone in their right mind would play ranked with bad internet, but then again, I have no idea why anyone in their right mind would play ranked lol.

Uh, there is a way bud. All you do is have to open your command thingy and type like "ping [rito's IP address]".

How am I level 8 and know this but you don't?

General Esdeath 3 votes

There's an easy way I wish people would learn.

Open command (Terminal on Mac) Type "ping 104.160.131.1" Hit enter It checks for 4 packets, if you want it to go longer type "-t" and it will keep going until you hit "ctrl C"

That's only for people on NA though.

Yes, this has been essential for me to determine my ping prior to playing a match without having to start a normals, thanks so much for posting this, this has the potential to prevent so many people from playing a bad match.

Well why the fuck have you been playing all day if youre lagging at 500 ms every game?

D3m37r13 votes

Another thing we need is a way to know that u DCed in the loading screen.

DeathBurst3 votes

Well, I don't forget to reset my damn router, but sometimes, it still laggs a lot. I would love to have a way to check my ping before entering a game. And don't imagine that it's more fun for me than for the 4 other people in my team. In fact, it's probably worse, since I have to deal with the lagg itself, the verbal abuse, and the defeat in the end. Lost one ridiculous game yesterday because of that, and I was stupid enough to play a second one just after: it had stopped lagging, but I was so tilted that I fed my arse off... Wonderful evening. Saving grace is I had won the first one before these too, and it didn't lagged at all...

Open Command Prompt, type tracert 185.40.65.1 The bottom three numbers should be about your ping.

DeathBurst2 votes

Problem is not getting one packet through once in a while, it's that I experience packet loss during the intense periods of the game (which results in higher displayed ping). I can see a ping around 50 during loading screen, and then the first skirmishes happen and it jumps to 200-300.

blkKalameet1 votes

call your provider maybe. might be a problem on there end, or with the connection to your home.

A couple of my friends have had water in there lines from faulty or old connection seals, and it caused an issue like that.

DeathBurst1 votes

Oh it's definitely on my provider's side, for sure. My point is, a tool to test our connection before starting the game, that could simulate the harshest conditions encountered during a game in a few seconds, that would be useful. And a real test, not just a ping to Riot servers, as we can see on the loading screen or by pinging manually ourselves.

EddardStark841 votes

Uh you can play a normal game to check if the game is laggy.. Come on now.

DeathBurst1 votes

Are you actually telling me to spend 35 minutes just to check the state of my connection? Plus, the time I find a new game after the Normal, it could have changed already.

largo farburn2 votes

you can always do a custom that way you can just leave when you get it fixed

xNomChu2 votes

I play on a constant of 200-300 ping and I don't have any trouble playing, it's just because of the distance from the server (I play NA but live in EU), so a ping regulator that bans people from playing with too high a ping would be a bit unfair for people who are playing in other regions because of friends and time zones.

However, maybe a little warning could come up when you try start a game that says 'your ping is /this high/' and maybe it could be a reportable offence if you ignore the warnings and play anyway? That way people aren't ruining each others' games while, at the same time, people aren't getting game restrictions when they are just far away.

Shepherd o Souls2 votes

As I graze the boards I see how much stuff league doesn't have. On DOTA you can load the server list and it shows your ping to all servers before you Q.

TNHA Baritone2 votes

You're mad at Riot because people don't take responsibility?

RavenMagus2 votes

You are directly attacking the people who are lagging and not the lag itself. You realize that it's almost certainly not their fault, right? If you almost never lag and then you get into game and suddenly are, trust me - it is just as frustrating for that person as it is for you. And guess what? They're on your team, too. They are also losing the game.

Maybe instead of attacking the "kids" who should be banned due to a circumstance they don't have much control over, you should instead suggest something that's not directly attacking other players for their lag. Maybe Riot could add a server ping in the regular client so you can see if your ping is spiking before you get in game.

Vortexual1 votes

I just played a game. I was spiking to 500 ping and I got numerous reports at the end. I wasn't trying to ruin the game for anyone. I was also in ranked. Which is even worse. The placement matches too. Riot really needs a way for people to check their ping because I just feel miserable while playing and getting flamed at the same time. I was at like 30 ping in other games and I really wish there was a way to get estimated ping levels in game.
