Illaoi E unfun

There is just no fun way to play the mini game. It takes you out of action for at around a minute in game time which is HUGE; you might as well die, you'll get back to lane quicker. Why did someone think killing tentacles would be a good, fun thing to do for a minute in game? Why am I being further punished for being reduced to 10% health late game for having my spirit killed by having to find some damn tentacles to kill? It has to be the most frustrating thing I've ever experienced in a videogame ever. I will continue to ban illaoi til there is a solution to this but I can't ban her every game if I'm not first pick. First time I've seriously considered quitting league. ughhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh I can't even describe how awful this subject makes me feel. I need a fucking break.

All they need to do is make it so leaving e zone only slows... The vessel crap should only happen if the spirit dies. Not fair that you are vesseled 9/10 times reguardless of where they are. You fight, you take damage, you run, you are vesseled, you take it, your vesseled...

I thought i was the only one but Illaoi is anti fun. I'll dodge games just to not even play with her. who does rito talk to when making these champs ? There is no way someone can honestly say that they make the game more enjoyable to play. Just look at Tahm Kench, he is also anti fun. Riot really needs to get it together because I really feel like most people agree with this statement.

Honestly the effect should just end after 3 tentacles. 60 seconds is way too long of a duration.

Sure you can just kill the first 3 tentacles, but that isn't always practical, especially if you are a melee champion, or if your allies keep stealing the tentacle kills. If you have to run away for 20 seconds after getting hooked, you still have another 40 seconds of being a vessel to deal with, (unless you kill the next 3 tentacles which will take you 30 seconds anyway). 3 tentacles (30 seconds) is long enough duration.

Having to kill 3 to make it go away is cool in a lore sense, but I don't think it makes good gameplay, since often the only tentacles you can kill are the ones the debuff spawns which only come every 10 seconds. Meaning that it will take you a minimum of 30 seconds to end the debuff, and a maximum of 60 seconds which is way too long for a debuff in this game where most basic ability buffs/debuffs last 2-6 seconds, and a few ultimate buffs/debuffs last 15 seconds.

I would change it to spawn 3 tentacles over 18 seconds ( one every 6 seconds) instead of 6 over 60 seconds.

It shouldn't have the manacost it does. 35 mana at rank 1. Lol.

Illaoi isn't OP. She's just really, really, really anti fun. That being said, your spirit will come back to you quicker if you attack her while it's out! 1 second will be shaved off per instance of damage. If you have a DoT, you can pretty much instantly get your spirit back

Spaceman5pff12/6/2015, 4:04:27 AM5 votes

I mean lategame a blitz hook will just str8 up kill you and the skillshots are near identical.

I called it when Illaoi was first released. I knew that her E was going to be overpowered. I was thinking that because of it only returning 1/4 the damage back to the enemy based on their current health, that it might not be too bad... but then I saw her kill someone by only attacking the spirit... she definitely is going to need nerfs, but this seems to be the pattern for most champs on release sadly.

riot if you leave illaoi in her current state she is going to be the only top laner that needs to be in the game simply because she has no weaknesses.. player her mid full ad 1 v 3 play her top as a brusier get a triple kill play her support full tank and guess what 1 v 2 as a full tank at level 6. you would think that the mindless playstyle would be enough but noooooooooooo we have to give her insane ratios and rage inducing minigames that your lane opponent has to play just so he doesnt die in under turret when illaoi isnt even in the lane anymore

you act like the tentacles are instant. you can still fight if you want its not hard. the tentacles are insanely telegraphed.

In ARAM she is a nightmare. Also, its amazing how many people don't realize that the hosts NEED to kill the tentacles and just kill them instead. I blame her fucking paragraphs in her tooltp for this. Most people[that play league] simply dont bother and think they will figure it out on their own. DOESNT WORK THAT WAY THIS TIME. she has to be damaged to reduce the duration, the tentacles have to be killed etc. You can't just pick up on that, but most people dont bother for some fucking reason.

Past like 20+ games as Sona, I've never had a creep score over 30. Then all of a sudden there's this 65. Guess who was spending that game playing the League of Legends' edition of Touhou?

Even though we ended up winning. Laning against an Illaoi support is the most annoying experience.

ParaBellam12/6/2015, 2:52:32 PM3 votes

Do you run away as soon as you get pulled?

90% of the people that I play against run away as far as they can, and become vessels automatically. Hell, most of my vessels created aren't from me killing it, but the enemy running away.

Don't run away, just attack her because 9 times out of 10 the Illaoi will just either cut losses and move away or the vessel will disappear (because the time gets reduced every time you damage the Illaoi.

Albeit, it's a massive noob-trap in that if the enemy knows this her strength goes down significantly. Then again, Illaoi is "how bad is the other team?" the champ.

Salidfingers12/6/2015, 8:05:47 PM2 votes

I like illaoi and started to play with her.

I have to admit though it feels there is more counter play with blitz hooks then with her grab. At least with blitz there is a chance to escape with barely any damage and if you escape the illoai zone you are still punished

Counter plays should be;

Either you get out of zone before your spirit dies and not get punished for it or allow tentacles to be destroyed by your team and counts to your tentacle kills.

One game i ended up grabbing 3 people consecutively and they where all struggling with each other fighting for tentacles under tower. I think it should count for each tentacle killed as long as your in range of the tentacles.

This post is meant to HELP you by ALLEVIATING some of your frustrations. I am not saying you should/shouldn't ban her, or that she is over/under powered. This is PURELY meant to help you deal with her in the situations in which you face her.

Ways to deal with her E:

  • I'm not going to tell you don't get hit because it's obvious, patronizing, and highly situation-dependent
  • DOT spells/AOE DOT spells work wonders against her E because every instance of damage she takes from you reduces the duration the spirit exists by 1 second. So if you dump something like morg pool under her, which does 10 ticks total, one per half second, and auto attack twice, it'll be done after about 2.5 seconds.
  • Once you are turned into a vessel, you are NOT out of the fight. It's easier to sit behind turret and wait for tentacles to spawn, but that's just what she wants. You can destroy currently active tentacles to shorten the duration of being a vessel. You can also count to ten between tentacle spawns, during which time you can act freely (remember currently active tentacles will still swing at you). Remember to dodge tentacles (next)
  • HOW TO DODGE TENTACLES: whenever they're ready to swing, they swing at where you are at that instant. If you're moving, they're still going to hit where you were, and the windup is pretty long. This means you can't move directly at them when they're going to swing. You can also bait out their swing by moving sideways near them, then move up and kill them while their swing is on cooldown (which is a while). This is harder if Illaoi is around because she can reset their swing with a w, but hey, it's not all super easy.
  • If you're fighting her while she has your spirit out, try to position that she can't hit you and the spirit at the same time. Scooting a few feet away or placing her between you and the spirit is a good plan. If she can hit you AND the spirit with tentacles, it amplifies her damage.

Good luck

You wanna know what's toxic? ARAM vs Illaoi.

Literally always have a minimum of 2-3 vessels with tentacles gangbanging you every 3 seconds.

I haven't the foggiest what the deal is with Illaoi support. I mean, sure, it's annoying in the laning phase, but pretty useless past the 10-15 minute mark. Nearly always freelo.

You know what really sucks, though? It's freelo that it isn't fun. Like, I'd rather go up against a Mundo or post-rework (pre-nerf!) Skarner. Because Illaoi is so bloody annoying to play against.

Her tentacle minigame is certainly a part of it, as is the fact that "assist" kills on tentacles give you nothing.

Had a recent game as a support where my adc simply didn't "get" it, despite all my attempts to explain it to him. Spent most of the laning phase as a vessel. Oh, joy.

WickedCrow12/6/2015, 5:53:39 AM2 votes

Its pretty much Illaoi's job to be honest. Shes an immobile, cc-less bully. Ive seen people using Nasus to counter her, since he can AA-Q for easy stacking. Hell, ive seen them WANT to become vessels cus of it. My only advice is to abuse mobility, use your minions, and attack her if she grabs your spirit. Try to keep it so she doesnt grab it near any tentacles so you can fight her. She is intimidating, but ALL of her damage is from the damn tentacles

And Im Limp12/6/2015, 5:15:28 PM2 votes

I feel ya man, can't play a serious top lane especially when her e is so broken, she is already hard to lane against but with her e you can't even stay safe when pent up under tower.

Killer of Poros12/6/2015, 6:12:22 PM2 votes

I wouldn't mind it as much if I had to be the one to kill tentacles. Every time I become a vessel my team mates kill the tentacles I'm trying to get and end up stuck as a vessel the whole time. They need to make it you just need to attack the tentacles just once for it to count that you killed it, that way even if the team mates start taking tentacles you can still stop being a vessel.

SleepyLionCub12/6/2015, 10:32:28 PM2 votes

I feel like it should deactivate when you get out of the range. not activate. its so dumb that the move actually activates when you leave the area.

Hex Veiler12/6/2015, 4:21:03 PM1 votes

Downvote me if you want, but I never understood the hate towards Illaoi in her current state. She is literally the only champion that tells you how to play against her. Stay in motion, and hit her as hard as you can. The tentacles can't hit you when you are moving, and fighting for your your spirit lowers the amount of time she has to kill it.

XIII Vanitas12/6/2015, 9:01:02 PM1 votes

How to play against Illaoi's E: 1- hide behind the minion wave. 2- dodge the skillshot. 3- fight Illaoi till you get your soul back and prevent her from cursing you. 4- if you can't fight her, leave the area immediately to avoid taking damage, then kill 3 tentacles. If you have to back, dodge the first tentacle that spawns, recall, heal yourself while buying items, and walk up/tp to lane again, then kill 3 tentacles.
