Just look at matches on ARAM. Full AD Comps win because itemization for being a tanky AD versus tanky AP is just outrageous. Being AD means you get to build every type of item you want efficiently while not sacrificing power because you are auto attack based.

There's a reason why all top-tier mages right now are those super-safe ones - if you can't do squat anyways, you might as well just not die. Whole point of being mage right now is not letting enemy tanks to build 4 armor items.
