Is it better to be really good at 1 champ or decent at a bunch?

Just wondering if I should start focusing my time on getting better at one champ so I can be more reliable in games rather than just doing decent with whatever pick seems right for the match up.

The ideal it's to have a small roaster of champ you are good with.

FoTM rotate due to items and Nerf/Buff eventually some pros will realize your main is a good pick and it will start to be perma picked/banned. Talking as ex-Viktor main that jumped from barely existant to pick or ban for a small period.

In lower elo (Bronze Silver Gold) being one trick is fine, and sometimes even preferable. In the higher elos (plat diamond master challenger) it is almost impossible to climb without having pocket picks. Firstly because if they ban your champ, you're fucked, and secondly, up in challenger the pool of players gets a lot smaller, and eventually people will recognize your name and pick up on your playstyle. Unless you're an absolute god at what you're playing, it could end up being a detriment. Even Katevolved, who is a Katarina one trick, still has other champions he is fairly good at for games that he knows picking Kat would be an instaloss

What I do is have one champ that I'm really good at and have a few other champs that I'm competent with if I get a bad matchup with my main. I haven't had much time to play ranked admittedly, but I haven't lost a game on my main yet this season.

League used to be a game (2010-2014) where although some champs were stronger than others on paper, you could still surpass the difference with mechanical skill and smart gameplay if you played a weaker champ every game (one trick as I am). Now the difference in power in certain champions really play a role in league when trying to win. So i would suggest play at least 2 or 3 champions at the level you believe you are. But i still believe if you master one champion, it is still an advantage because you know how to play at every stage of the game in any situation.

But back then there were a million targeted abilities and not enough skillshots. How do you surpass a Pantheon Q with mechanical skill?

you surpass the panth q with macro skill. Some champs dont give you the agency to outplay them mechanically but you can easily outplay them on the map

You dont panth q to diamond, you don't even panth q to win a game. Sure panth q is "effective" against certain top laners. But the game is so incredibly complex, and takes multiple steps to win one game. Sure there are certain abilities that counter others etc but there is not one ability that wins a game outright

At the beginning, prioritize mastery over breadth. I find that it's very necessary to have at least one champion you can become amazing with if you don't want to just get brutalized over and over. Get to Mastery 7 and winning your lane/position (not necessarily game) 80% of the time or better with at least one champion - this probably will take a few months if you're doing it right.

When you graduate to draft/ranked play on a regular basis, that expands to two, because you'll need to survive at least one ban on your position. And that's two per position you plan to play - you can't always get the one you want - so ideally you should be able to play at least two positions well and have four really good champions before playing draft/ranked regularly.

If you get really serious, learn to play every position well - so ten champions, two in each of all five roles.

After that, breadth is the goal. Really top level players can probably whomp the average forum denizen here with a few dozen champions. But even they still have certain champs they just utterly thrive with, so always keep at least a few champs that you just master to the limit and stay current on!

having one champ youre amazing at is great because you can play against counters if your confident and do well but you realistically should have a few champs you can play. Doesnt need to be more than 3 in most cases. This is coming from a support main so take it with a grain of salt. Whats autofill? Idk my only choices in a lobby are what champs im playing because i dont worry about getting an off role.

I would pick 2-3 champs you really like and master them.

If you climb really high with only one champ it can be difficult to try out new champs without getting curb stomped over and over.

Have 2-3 champions you can god mode on in each role
