Can we figure out this Range VS Melee Controversy?

Alright we all know that playing a melee champ vs a ranged champ is the worst situation ever for the melee player because every time you try to cs you get poked and there is not much you can do to retaliate because if you do you instantly pick-up minion aggro despite them being the first to attack you. This ends up with the melee champ taking more damage than the ranged one because at some point you need to back off or you will die. That results in the ranged champion getting an extra 2-3 auto attacks in maybe more if they chase. Attempt to farm under your tower and they will still harass you because their AA range puts them slightly under turret range so that they can walk out of it before they take a tower shot. What I am trying to say here is that in any melee vs ranged match-up, the ranged champion always has the advantage because they can freely harass the melee champion without much retaliation and push the wave because they all have a built in escape to save them from ganks. To balance this issue I say either give the ranged champion a 50% damage reduction when the aa an enemy melee champion or give melee champions lower mana costs for their abilities in a ranged vs melee match-up. The 50% damage reduction idea is so that you don't get immediately poked down to 10% health just trying to cs the first wave of minions and if that idea is a no go then giving top laners who use mana lower costs would allow even trade between the two champions since ranged champs usually do have the lower costing abilities than the majority (if not all) melee champs who have mana pools. I would like to hear your guys take on the ranged vs melee controversy and also how you guys deal with your own ranged vs melee match-ups (from the melee's perspective).

It's called counter picking at its not like all ranged champs immediately outclass melee in lanes. Lets look at mid lane for a second. Some of the biggest counters to long range mages are melee champs. Ziggs is countered extremely hard by Zed, Talon and Yasuo. Xerath gets demolished by Fizz. Fizz is also extremely strong against almost all adcs unless they have very high mobility or can kite well like tristana, lucian, ezreal and possibly even vayne, however most adcs get melted by Fizz. Kennen struggles against both Irelia and Diana. Getting counter picked and knowing how to play when youve been counter picked is all part of personal skill. It is not nearly so black and white as ranged vs. melee

This is 100% the correct sentiment to have. Good man.

I used to believe riot's lies about wanting aggressive melee champions to be playable and needing just a little longer to figure it out but at this point it's very clear they just want a passive farmoff until eventually both players put their cursor over a ward and teleport in for lc$ big play$. So basically pick irelia/tree/poppy (it's hilarious that riot has created an environment where this design is competitively viable through their idiotic handling of toplane) and accept that the laning phase is a skill-less ranged faceroll now that you sit through abusing teleport to farm until you finally hit your power spike. Or pick another game which will probably be more fun.

well melee champs arent totally hopeless cuz you have more sustain than non melee champs

malphite has his shield mundo and garen has regen tryn has a heal nasus has regen, armor, and life steal etc. as long as you can out trade them, you should be able to cuz bruisers tend to be excellent duelist with greater damage to compensate for their lower range they will eventually be forced out while you can resustain back damage you took from a trade

but most of all, its a skill match up, admittedly the person playing melee probably has to be not dumb and is fairly proficient

Thanks guys and I like the fact that most people are spot on with what I am asking about, but could you guys also include things like AP tops? I think that would allow for player who do view this post to get a better idea of how to play vs them and what to do in a sense

Well considering most ranged champs are better in lane and have better late games than melees you might as well switch mobas

Yea it's really sad that Melee champs with no form of ranged harass are forced to essentially farm under tower until they outscale their opponent, get a gank, or capitalize on a mistake the enemy makes. Quite frankly if you make a mistake as a ranged champ versus a melee champ you should really re-evaluate your own game. There are so many ways to zone, out poke and out trade a majority of them before they even get close to you; you've essentially made a mistake because you got lazy or due to your own hubris. The game is becoming a plyting field only for hyper carries and ranged hyper carries with a sport for Niche utility tanks, heavy sustain/utility junglers and heavy utility supports; so that team fights can have a length of 20 seconds at all stages of the game and snowballing can be greater exasperated by diminishing meaningful counterplay, strengthening "protect the carry" metas and weakening itemization that isnt ADC or APC oriented.

Best way to end the controversy: Delete all melee champions.

Why not? Who wants to be melee anyway?

  1. buff dorans shield vs ranged attacks
  2. reduce the base ad from ranged champions
  3. buff ranged damage vs minons so they still can lasthit

that would atleast help in lane a good bit...

Guys, Cloth + 5 Potions is and has always been the way to go while fighting as a melee versus a ranged champion, unless that champion is AP. In which case Flask is infinitely better.

As long as you can outsustain the poke until you all in, who cares what you have to buy to do it.

Remember the 9 potion + 2 ward Katarinas?

just that most melees(more or less all no-assasins) can't realy all-in on most ranged, as the ranged have just as much disengage as you have engage. nerfing the earlygame disengage/buffing early game engage would probably shift the power to melees dominating ranged in a sololane, which wouldn't be great aswell

Just to throw it in here for those who don't know why this problem doesn't happen in dota 2: Poormanshield, hero turnrates(makes kiting 1 vs 1 a lot harder) and better base stats on most melee's. Ah I nearly forgot, a lot of farm is good to have in dota 2 but you are not crippled if you loose 50% cs because of bad matchup as long as you play it safe.

poormans shield more or less exists in dorans shield, it just would need a small buff Fast turnarates are one of the main reason i enjoy lol much more than dota, it keeps the game more fluid and dynamic while dota feels incredible clunky for me. It does help in a melee vs ranged battle, but i think it costs to much over all for this game to be considered. I definitly wouldn't say no to better basestats on melees compared to ranged, especially for hp/5 and ms.
