How does ward disabling work?

I'm just wondering how it works on the enemy screen, if I place a control ward or use duskblade, can they see the control ward, and does it black out that portion of the screen or does the ward continue to ward but displays an illusion of safety (Like if I stand in a disabled ward's bush, it'll show the area as warded but won't show me)
