We need more variety in tier 2 runes.

Ok so to start I'd like to say that I REALLY like the recent changes to runes, that being the removal of tier1 runes and the drop in price of tier2 runes to 1 IP (well, don't care much for the removal of tier1's, but the drop in price for tier2's is an amazing step forward)

So I was browsing the store checking to see if the 2for1 rune page sale was still on.... sadly I missed it. QQ

However I decided to browse around some runes to see if I might be able to fill in some gaps on different stats by getting the muuuch cheaper tier2 versions and noticed a surprising, and disappointing, lack of variety in tier 2's.

Here's a quick breakdown of what's available in each tier:

there are 4 tier 2 Glyphs, AP, CDR, Mres, and mana regen/5 There are 22 tier3 Glyphs. not gonna list them all cuz lazymode plus it's clearly visible in your game client

there are 4 tier 2 marks, armor pen, AD, atkspeed, magic pen there are 19 types of tier 3 marks.

there are 4 tier2 seals, armor, hp, health regen/5, M res there are 24 types of tier 3 seals

there are 11 tier 2 quintessences, thankfully the selection is a bit more varied here due to being able to fill several role types there are 33 tier 3 quintessences.

the difference in variety is astonishing. I wanted to consider buying some armor marks for when I buy thresh on my low lvl alt... can't even do that since there are no armor marks on tier 2. I think the selection and variety on tier 2 should be expanded a bit, not to deter people from buying tier3 runes, but i think tier3 should be the thing to ultimately aspire for in order to eventually, and in the long run, optimize stats, but tier 2 rune prices were dropped for a reason, and I believe that was so that everyone could have access to runes that would allow them to customize their starting-game stats to fit their playstyle and laning.

Tier 2 is a waste of ip just get tier 3 and you'll be happy with a complete tier 3 page.

The problem is tier 3 runes cost a LOT more than tier2

here's an example. tier 3 Glyphs for ability power give 1.19 ability power per. at 9 that's 10.71. tier 2 Glyphs for ability power give 0.92 ability power per. at 9 that's 8.28 the difference is 2.43 AP

however.

the price for tier3's is 205, total price for 9 is 1845 the price for tier2's is 1, total price for 9 is 9 the difference in prise is 1836

the difference in price for 2.43 AP is astronomical.

Yeah...I know how much they cost, I have like 16 pages of them, what you really want is the best you can get, too many times you might barely not kill someone cause of a little extra damage or not escape because of a little less armor.

There's no reason not to buy tier 2's while waiting, though.

Literally one first win of the day will buy you every single tier 2 rune. All of them combined cost 141 IP.

There is a reason because then you won't have the ip to buy tier 3s, which are better, you want as much advantage as you can get.

141 IP is hardly a setback. That's 141 runes total for less than the price of a single tier 3 MPen mark, which you can earn in literally two Versus AI games, or one if you have FWotD.

You may as well have the tier 2 runes to use while you're saving up for the tier 3 ones. Especially since the halved XP to 30 means you have less IP than before upon hitting 20.

When my alt account hit level 20, I just BARELY had enough IP for the bog-standard cheap tier 3 runes.

It doesn't seem like a setback till you buy like 50 of them, then it's a waste because you end up just wanting tier 3s later on. Late game man

No, the current T2 are all a player at this Level should need.

You cant specialize certain rune pages at this point because you dont have the rune pages!

T2 are here to teach the newbies how to use runes, they dont exist to get the maximum out of your Champ.

Additionally: In T3 are more Noob-Traps than actual Runes.... It's good to show the players in T2 what's important and good for each color and what should only be used when you're 100% sure it will work.

well, in t2 there's no decent marks for tanking. there's armor pen, AD, atkspeed and magic pen one could argue that you could go AD/armorpen since it increases your auto damage, but that still does not make me tankier in the early game like I wish to be.

One the one hand, T2 runes are clearly intended for newer players and the simplification is really good for newbies to grasp the concept. On the other hand it makes experimentation incredibly tedious for people that don't play frequently or been in the game long enough. T2's could be used by lvl30s to cheaply try out a rune page layout while they save the ip to buy the T3 variations for maximum power.

I personally would love greater variety in T2 runes.

How are tier 2s any simpler? They're the same exact runes as t3 but less effective.

Its simpler in the sense of less noise. There are tons of T3 runes that are noob traps for those who don't have a particular role or champ in mind such as the gold+, 1.5% health, etc. Tons of options can be overwhelming and the high cost means that any decision made is one that is to be committed to. Intimidating for anyone that just hit 30 for the first time.

T2 runes are fewer and are of the basic AD, AP, HP, AR, MR that's simple to grasp and easy to build at least 2 rune pages out of, which is what most noobs start with. They shouldn't have to wander the boards to learn how to build pages.

My point is that the simplicity doesn't come from the runes themselves, but rather that the options for runes are so few that it won't overwhelm and intimidate newer players and this is the intended purpose of the low variety.

I mean, like, it's the exact same thing as just rational shopping, just look for the kind of rune that gives you the highest ad, the kind that gives you the most mr, the kind that gives you the most armor and you'll automatically find armor seals, mr glyphs and ad marks.
