How does the MMR/ elo work

I am legit confused on this. I find myself in games that i would describe as lop sided. I am not saying im great nor am I saying that I deserve better but I find myself in games where our jg player dies to the creeps 3 times then dies to the other team 15. Then i get games where our adc goes 1-14 and i really find myself asking is this normal? I mean im currently stuck mid gold but the skills of the players is beyond messed up. some games you get people who are legit and have an idea of what they are doing then the next game you get people who throw the game because they get one death or something. It just does not seem to make sense to me. Another note is that i went 7-3 in placements this season and i was placed bronze. to further add to my confusion.

You play with people who have a similar match making rating as you regardless of the rank differences.

Ex. Someone who gets placed in Gold V and wins a lot of games in a row can be placed in high gold/low Platinum games because he's only adding to his match making rating due to the wins, and not losing any of his rating because he is not losing games.

Also, if you play against a team who has an over all higher MMR and win, expect to gain more LP because the system expects the team with the higher MMR to win since they are suppose to be "better players" because of the higher rating. It's a very vague explanation i'm giving, but if you lose na.op.gg and check your MMR you'll be able to determine what kind of players you should be playing with. It's usually fairly accurate for me.

idk why you're getting such bad teams tho lol
