How to fight Taric mid-Yi jungle?

Hello everybody! I just faced the infamous Taric mid-Yi jungle duo as the midlaner and I got absolutely destroyed by Yi who had double my Cs at level 6. I'd like to know what I, as the midlaner, could do against it. I tried pushing the wave as much as I could but I ended up getting froze away by the duo. Taric would simply tank the wave until Yi was there and than I couldn't touch the next wave until they decided to shove and roam. I had 0 vision control around my lane as they would come in 2 and remove everything I had placed and after level 6 they came from the dark and dived me. I died even with barrier and flash used to Yi with first item completed and a recurve bow while I was sitting on a lost chapter and boots. I then tried to follow around my own jungler but we couldn't 2vs 2 and I lost my turret to Yi in matter of seconds.

What can I do against it?

You ban yi until next patch.

You can't

My advice?

  1. Choose a CC lock champion with long range. Can't lock out farm on a champ who can range and has a pocket CC if they try to turret dive you.

  2. Get used to mass wave cs clearing. In normal lanes you auto attack a lot. If your champ has to auto attack to farm, you're going to lose. If it can 1 skill clear, you'll do better (In the case of someone like Lux, this means maxing E and then just waiting for waves to get about under 60-50% HP)

  3. Think about warded roaming paths. If you can't farm, you can possibly gank. They're expecting you to feel pressured. As long as the path is well warded, a gank bot while they're not looking might be what you need to get into the game. Just don't blind roam and feed Yi.

  4. Think about Mobility Runes. Yi's biggest strength is mowing down people who can't get away. So is Taric's. It's a good idea to have movement speed to make their jobs more irritating. For example, Although you'll rarely outrun Yi, you can rune to outrun Taric. Yi chasing alone becomes pretty trivial if you have a decent team and a CC kit. It can also help in a more abstract way versus Yi: His ult lasts 7 seconds. So..... make his killing you tedious. If your skill shots can activate a Rune like Phase rush, you can run in bursts about the same speed as Yi. If there's CC's mixed in there too, you can possibly waste his entire ult.

  5. Know how your champ's CC works and plan accordingly. Yi is great at destroying delayed CC like Morgana or Zyra , because he can just time an alpha strike to avoid it. So.... you need to ensure Alpha strike is down when you use it. There are a few stuns/etc which don't have windups or delays, and those you can use before he Alpha's IF he's far enough away.

I know Zyra's not actually a Yi counter, but I sometimes do run her vs him. Why?

  • I can spawn plants in his run path which makes him suddenly think: Keep pursuing the Zyra, or kill the plants hitting him because he knows my R/etc is coming and he might die if he takes the prelim plant damage. If he pursues me, I have up to a 2 second root after he alpha strikes me, and I can also R myself, so that if he dedicates to fighting me, he's also going to get knocked up. As long as I proc Phase Rush and have some movement speed, I can waste his entire 7 seconds. And then it's a basic skills fight, and if he didn't manage to get more than 1-2 hits in, then he's in my ball park.

That's a lot of thinking on both the part of Yi and Zyra, so doesn't always work, but usually does, especially if the chase path can bring me around a corner which makes the plants vs champion decision harder.

I hate lock matchups too. But I thought I'd try to give better advice than just "Ban."

The thing is its more on your jungler to punish it. When they're mid, your jungler should be invading a camp, taking dragon, ganking another lane uncontested, etc. When they're farming the jungle, you have to hard push so they show in the map again. Every time they're mid clearing, thats a side lane that has no fear of getting ganked while your jungler could be anywhere. And of course if the support goes mid alone to clear, you have to abuse your lead over that player. You also could try to freeze the wave to deny as much as the mid farm as you can.

the yi/taric strategy relies on alternating between farming the jungle, and minion waves on midlane to funnel two gold and xp streams into the yi.

if you want to beat it, you simply make sure that there isnt ever a minion wave for the yi to pick up, and they basically end up gaining nothing but regular jungle farm, and lose all the farm in mid.

you do this by locking in a lane freeze infront of your turret. if you do this properly, then the enemy minions will kill your own minions as fast as they arrive, which means the enemies lose all that farm.

mid laners are used to hard shoving minions into the enemy turret to give themselves room to roam. so this lane freeze playstile is probably not something theyre used to.

at least this should work on paper. havent tried it myself. but it seems like the most logical approach.

id probably pick someone like Viktor who can control an entire enemy minion wave by stunning it outside his own turret, and has good enough waveclear to manipulate the waves, and their position properly.
