Counter-jungling

What exactly is it that makes a champion good at it? What about a champion makes him/her vulnerable to it?

I was just looking up why Amumu isn't seen very often in pro play and the main reason I found was that he's easy to counter-jungle. I know what counter-jungling is. My question is what exactly makes a champ good at it, or vulnerable to it?

TY for all feedback!

People will say a lot of things, but here's what it breaks down to:

  1. Champions that are good at counter-jungling are those with strong burst to steal monster kills, CC to prevent the enemy jungler from escaping and good mobility so they can go in and out of the enemy jungle easily.

  2. Champions that are vulnerable to counter-jungling are the opposite. They don't have much mobility or CC, so they can't get away if they get jumped. They don't have burst either, so they're forced to rely on smite to prevent kill steals. But one thing more important than others is that they are not safe junglers. Any jungler who gets low on health easily will be extremely vulnerable to counter-jungling.

  3. The answer to counter jungling doesn't come from the jungler, it comes from his teammates. The counter-jungler ALWAYS has the advantage. He shows up at full health against an opponent who's damaged, whose abilities are on cooldown, who's low on mana and who's being attacked by monsters. The one getting counter-jungled has literally no chance in this scenario (unless it's Nunu because lol), they can't win that fight. "Well", you ask, "why don't people ALWAYS counter-jungle then?" Simple, what makes counter-jungling dangerous isn't that you might not win the fight with the enemy jungler, it's that his teammates might show up and gank you. So, the answer to getting counter-jungled is always for your teammates to be on the ball. This is why counter-jungling works so well in PUGs: People in lane won't be paying attention to their jungler and even repeated pings are unlikely to cause them to pay attention. Then when their jungler dies, they'll just yell at him and imply he should have won the 1v1 at 25% health VS the 100% health enemy. "Oh, and get vision", because you can afford wards as a jungler.

Biggest factors are...

1--How good is the champions at 1v1s? For example Amumu is pretty crap in early game 1v1s vs someone like a Shyvana/Mundo/Elise/Lee Sin/Vi/etc.

2--Can the champion escape when caught? Lee Sin, Elise, and shyvana(once 6) all have a means of jumping out of the jungle if they get collapsed on and Mundo just pops his ult and runs out.

3--How fast and safe do they clear? All the ones I mentioned above clear camps rather quickly, and done right they don't lose to much health either, so they can get in, clear an opponents camp and get out before the opponent even knows they where there, and if they are caught in the middle of doing a camp they don't tend to be caught at low health.

Those are the 3 biggest factors I personally would look for if I'm wanting to counter jungle. Shyvana is prolly my fav, although that is more because she was my first jungler all the way back in S2. Amumu sadly doesn't fit this bill. His early clear is pretty rough, often finishing around half health which makes him pretty much dragon food if Shyvana comes a knocking. Additionally Amumu doesn't get strong until allowed to scale into the late game where as counter junglers tend to be strong as most stages of the game. Likewise if I'm sitting in champ select and I see an opponent pick a Hecarum/Amumu/Naut/Malphite/etc who tend to clear slowly and not always very safely then yeah I grab myself a strong counter jungler and commence operation bury the hell out of the enemy jungler.

Well first it's about reacting, and knowledge more of their junglers rotation, if they invade and take your blue buff, you got and invade yours, without question, inform your team you are invcaded and counter invade, after which you go check your red, do your rotation, by the point your back near your blue you can go back into thier jung and counter golems or something. its all about knowing where they are.

what makes someone good at counter jungling is some form of movement boost, strong level 1, and and exicute. as nunu you can claim objectives with ease because he has all of them, starting q gives you a sustain execute making and invade easy.

what makes ammumu valnurable is that for him to jungle correctly he should start e, giving him very little that he could do to react to an ivade. when you amumu just assume they will be going for your blu, have the lane ward your blu,e and assume that you should steal theirs or go for your red. depending on what their jungler.

most melee champs, and champs that dont have mana start red, where ammumus and nunus start blue most the time.

i hope i could help

What I've found to be the best counter junglers are those with the following qualities:

  1. Be a good duelist. If your kit is meant for aoe damage and team fights (for ex. Amumu or Gragas ), you probably should not spend much time in the enemy jungle.

  2. Pay attention! If the enemy jungler is ganking bot lane and you're taking a buff on the other side of the map, go see if his is up, immediately go and take the 2 (hopefully 3) camps in his side of the jungle. This will also help balance out the gank by setting him/her behind

  3. Vision, vision, vision. There are 2 ways of counter-jungling: One is to notice when the jungler is farming and take his camps in other places. The other is to notice he's farming and go sit in a bush and wait for the camp to hurt him, then wrecking his booty. In either case you MUST know where he is. You don't want a lee sin suddenly kicking you into mid lane because he ran into you stealing one of his camps.

  4. Pay MORE attention (MOST IMPORTANT): If at any time you enter the enemy jungle, watch the minimap for enemy movements. If suddenly the enemy support and mid are mia, they're probably coming up the rear to stick a knife in your butt. Buy a item 3341 on your first back and upgrade it as soon as you can.

IN ORDER TO PREVENT COUNTER JUNGLING:

item 2044 item 2043 Also getting scuttle bug doesn't hurt.

That's it. If you can see the enemy jungler is going into your jungle top side and you're ganking bot, go take his camps then git out. You can either leave one small monster up if you want to deny a little more, or you could just take the whole thing for more experience.

SO in conclusion, basically get vision and pay attention. It's really just that simple

How to counterjungle: Play Nunu. That's basically all you need to do. Yes, Lee Sin and other duelists that have strong mobility (like Rek'sai) are good at counterjungling, but their power is much more useful when they gank.

A counter jungler (the correct term is 'Control jungler') does not gank. Instead, they punish repeated ganks by taking a lot of CS from the enemy jungler. The way you do this is by invading and knocking the camp down to one small minion, so that the camp does not respawn on its own. Normally a camp will respawn in 50 seconds, but by leaving a single minion there that is weak, you deny most of the XP of that camp, plus the XP of potentially one to two more camps depending on how long the enemy jungler takes to clear it!

You do NOT do this for buffs though. Clear the whole camp, because you want that timer. More importantly, you DON'T want your opponent to have it. That way you can consistently invade and deny.

The purpose of counterjungling is to basically gimp the enemy jungler SO hard (in XP, not gold) that he can't do anything in the mid game. If a champion is particularly vulnerable to this (low clear speed, unreliable ganks) you can end up 40 CS and as much as 3 levels ahead of them (Akali)
