1 out of 10 how good is Atma's Impaler?

I don't see it all to much but it seems like it would be a good item to pick for a fighter or a tank. Not knowing much about it, i decided to ask what people think about it.

stats 45 Armor 15% Crit Chance UNIQUE: You gain attack damage equal to 1.5% of your maximum health. for 2300 gold

There are only a few champions that actually benefit from it as it currently functions.

Garen would be one of them. It allows him to get more resists and to get some crit chance on his E. Nice little situational item for when over half their team is AD.

If you are playing the majority of the champion roster though? Meh, not worth the slot.

kanacho3 votes

I can only see it being good on either Garen or Tankplank. Aside from that, there is very few who would actually even utilize the item currently. Not to mention there tends to be better items to fill the slot, since the stats you get out of atma's aren't all the best.

MrBuffington1 votes

Or super, super, super late game Sion. Theoretically infinite AD scaling because of the infinite health scaling. There's probably a better item in most cases, but if your game goes on for three hours and you have like, 10k health, it's probably better than most other items, lol.

kanacho1 votes

Well, I'm not saying that it's bad on everyone else, It's just the most practical on garen and tankplank imo.

MrBuffington1 votes

no, I agree, I was just pointing out a different mechanic; even though Sion has good AD scalings and tons of HP, I don't think he uses the stats as well as GP or Garen, but there's probably a point where he can get more AD with Atmas than he can with any other item, though it's pretty impractical.

yup

It's really good on Mundo... just saying

It's absolutely terrible in pretty much every situation.

Riot should up the cost but make it a bit better later when it's intended to be good.

I wouldnt mind this, would be a buff to garen I think. Well buff to his final form but nerf to the time to get to his final form from increased cost.

Sire Hippington2 votes

1, the %scaling makes it rahter bad midgame, the low costs and stats make it bad lategame, and crit is a rather bad stat for most champions that actually could use it

kanacho2 votes

Best option is jungle tankplank with golem's and trinity and warmogs. Then it would be extremely powerful. Outside of that, it's either underwhelming or an entire waste of a slot.

XxCatatoniCxX1 votes

It's good on Cho, Mundo, an Sion (if you get the scaling)

KalastRaven2 votes

Basically it's really awkward. It's cheap and builds from a gold item, so you'd think it was good early, but it's only good after you've got some Hp gear. Then the Crit tends to be underwhelming on most champions that have really high hp.

Caldwell Azvian2 votes

Its a Garen/10 imo.

ParinoidPanda2 votes

It's in the same boat as Executioner's Calling: It's cost efficient, but not slot efficient.

MochaChank1 votes

it's bad. The only person who may get it is Mundo vs an all AD team. Even then there are better items for him like a Maw, but like I said if 'all AD'.

The only champ I would recommend this on is Sion, and that's only if you're using a build with a fair amount of crit chance in it.

i see it working on a pantheon who builds hp wise.

It can be pretty situations. Of note is the fact that it's cost effective around 2000g, so by the time you'd actually purchase it it is cost effective without bonus health.

One of the main issues with the items is the Crit Chance and the fact that health stackers aren't typically those who scale extremely well with AD or Crit. I could see it being paired with a Trinity Force on some champions (Xin Zhao, Irelia, etc).

However, the reason it isn't really used is that there is pretty much always a better option.

ForumAccount231 votes

You need about 1k bonus health from items to make it worth... Its a cheap finisher item on garen and it works out decent there.

Black cleaver > Swiftness or Tabi boots > Randuins > Spirit Visage > IE > Atmas.

Good final loadout with a cheap item after that expensive IE to finish things off with more armor. bit more damage, and 40% total crit chance.

So basically its an awkward item that I wouldnt mind getting removed, even tho it works well for garen at least.

It's pretty good on garen, gnar, and soon to be sion, but that's it.

I give it a 5.

JusticePauldrons1 votes

It works amazing on Garen and volibear. Decent on Pantheon and will likely be good on Sion after his rework due to his potential health. I would give it a 7. On some champions (like Garen it is amazing 9/10, but on others it is completely useless.

It is as good as you would expect a crit item for bruisers. It only works for bruisers who can crit. Crazy how that works o.o

Also consider the fact is cheap as all hell to acquire (extremely good gold efficiency for the stats) and allows you to get some extra gold while building it.

junglerboy161 votes

I never thought about that, but your right it would be great on Voli because his built in AS steroid makes the AD and Crit worth, and he usually stacks HP (new SotAG so good on him) definitely gonna try it out next time I play him.

It's a very cost efficient item late game. But there are two big problems with it:

  1. it has an early/mid game cost, with early/mid game base states, but it's only really worth building in the late game, when you have tons of health

  2. More importantly: while it is cost efficient for the stats it gives, there just aren't that many champions who want those stats. It gives AD, armor, and crit chance, but you need tons of health to make it worth a slot. And there aren't that many champions who stack tons of health and also want crit chance.

On top of these issues, there are just so many better armor options for tanks, and damage options for fighters. Even if it "works" on a champion, it's almost never the best use of a late game item slot.

All this being said, it's not a terrible item on the small pool of champions who can actually make use of it (Garen, Gangplank, AD Sion).

I'd give it a holistic rating of 2/10 . On the three champions I listed, it's more like 5/10 (not a total troll item, but also probably not as strong as some other item you could fill the slot with).

You need 1200hp to make it gold efficient. Every champion in the game has more base health than that, usually by level 13. Some champions have more health than that by level 7. On a champion with 2000hp, which pretty well everyone has late game, it's 119% efficient. On a late game bruiser with 3000hp, which is quite reasonable, it's 142% efficient. And that's all completely ignoring any gold you might have generated from the avarice blade. It's an insanely efficient item for a bruiser!

Or it would be. Unfortunately a good portion of it's cost is made up of crit chance, which while nice it's a big priority for most bruisers. And while building out of a gold gen item should be quite appealing, the Avarice Blade really isn't very good on bruisers who generally need power/durability items to stay competitive top lane, or can't farm units for Avarice nearly as quickly in the jungle or already have/want a jungle specific gold gen item.

It's a great item, but it really doesn't fit anyone well at the moment. At this point it's strong on Garen, and likely on the reworked Sion. But not really on anyone else.

an item being cost efficient, is a really crappy item. Your average tier 3 item is so cost efficient its stupid, so being only cost efficient is bad in this game. You need like 2.5k bonus health to make it as efficient as some other items.

336KMlmYm91 votes

Show the gold efficiencies of some tier 3 items and how they are so much better. Being 142% efficient is extremely good.

For example, Phantom Dancer is 118% efficient and it's almost just a ball of stats, the only thing unaccounted for is ignoring unit collision, which would have to be worth 700g just to match Atma's efficiency when used by a 3000hp champ, and that is again ignoring the fact that Atma's builds from a gold gen item. I seriously doubt ignoring unit collision is worth the 700g, and even if it is that would by your standards still leave PD as being a terrible item.

PD is a terrible item, that is why static shiv is bought whenever pd isn't crucial, it is just a big ball of stats, it just happens to be a big ball of the correct stats for a certain champ type, which makes it useful, basically PD > adc as atmas > Garen. Not too mention no champ naturally has 3k hp so you are spending more gold before it is 142% efficient

IE and deathcap are the kings of gold efficiency. Stats alone make up more then the cost and with the passives buying more ad or more ap respectively they go into the 4.5k-5k range of value with just your base AD or for deathcap your dorans and runes.

You can actually look up an items base gold efficiency on the lolwiki so I'm not going to bother doing that homework for you.

336KMlmYm91 votes

For Deathcap to be worth 4500-5000g you need to have 170-260 AP outside of that granted by the Deathcap itself. It is impossible just from 'your dorans and runes' to get anywhere near that value. In fact it is several times what is possible from Dorans and Runes alone. That Requires at least two tier 3 items in addition to your runes/dorans.

Also, Statikk Shiv's passive would need to be worth 1000g to make Shiv match Atma's efficiency at 3000hp. It's certainly a good passive but I doubt it's worth 1000g, but at best they are roughly equally efficient under those circumstances.

I've looked up several items on lolwiki, and Atma's compares very favourably in terms of gold efficiency. If you want to argue that Atma's doesn't provide a combination of stats that you want I can definitely get behind that idea. But gold efficiency isn't Atma's issue.

JusticePauldrons1 votes

Not really, think about it. It only need 1300 hp to be 100% gold efficient. Every champion in the game has more base health than that, so past that point you are only getting more and more value just for the game progressing. At 3000 health (a common average for bruisers) the item gives you 45 additional attack damage, on top of it's crit chance and armor. At the high end of 4000 it gives you 60 attack damage for free just by building tanky. I think you can understand why this item would be a great pick for champions with high health pools who crit such as Garen Volibear with the changes to Sion you have the potential for infinite scaling attack damage.

It's good on tankplank, garden and new sion

Good old times.... I can remember playing Garen with Quadra Dorans Blade and Atmas back when it gave 3%. Being unslowable, taking 3/4th health of mage/carry/support with a single E and still being tanky as hell 'cause he gained flat armor and mr for CSing.....

Sigh... Good old times. Poor overnerfed Garen.... Poor Dorans... Poor Atmas...

Situational. Gold efficient, arguably not slot efficient, but most games you aren't supposed to finish all 6 items anyway.
