Supports Upgrading Gold Income and Sightstone Items (In-Depth Guide)

Supports have 2 core items that generally are used to differentiate themselves from the other roles, and those items are your starting gold income item and your sightstone.

Supports have the option to combine their gold income item (2nd upgraded form) and Sightstone, to build into 1 item that posses both the the gold income's passive ability and the Sightstone's active ability. This provides the benefit of having one extra item slot for another item for future benefit and it is cheaper than fully upgrading the 2 items separately.

However, combining both those items would mean you would lose not only the stats of your final upgraded form of the gold income item (and ruby Sightstone too), but also your active ability that comes with it (for ruby sighstone, you lose the unique passive).

With all this in mind, is it better to upgrade your gold income item and Sightstone separately? Or is it better to upgrade them together and combine them?

Here are my personal opinions on whether I should upgrade them together or separately:

item 3069 and item 2045 vs item 2302

^Unless you plan to build item 3800 , upgrading fully into a item 3069 will provide a movespeed buff to you and any of your teammates in range, that can be used for engaging and disengaging a fight. The extra gold per minion death is also invaluable as a support, as it helps generate more gold for you to get your items quickly with relatively no risk.

item 3092 and item 2045 vs item 2301

^I always feel that upgrading fully into item 3092 is better because the active is too useful in helping scout and area around you for enemies and can locate them. The slow effect is also a prominent reason why it is very good, the slow helps with catching up to fleeing targets or running away from chasing targets. Another important ability with the item 3092 , is that it removes the downside of killing a minion, retaining the ability to earn gold when damaging the enemy with auto-attacks or spells.

item 3401 and item 2045 vs item 2303

^This comparison has always been the toughest for me to decide because on the one side, item 3401 provides a shield based of 10% of your maximum hp for 4 seconds, which then detonates and slows the enemy by 40% for 2 seconds. This also provides 10% cdr, an important stat that the combined version does not provide. However, on the other side, item 2303 provides 50 extra health than item 3401 and the gold generation is the same for both items, but because item 2303 is cheaper and creates an extra item slot to use (by combining its 2nd upgrade form with Sightstone), this actually allows you to buy another item that can provide you more efficient stats with extra effects as well.

So personal opinion, unless I am a heavy hp tank champion, I get item 2303 > item 3401 for the extra item slot, and to provide an extra slot for another beneficial item.

This has been my understanding and ideals with Supports and the option to either upgrade separately or together their gold income and Sightstone. This took a long time for me to think about and type out, so If you like what you see on here and if it has helped you in anyway, please upvote this so many others will come and learn as well! I almost always get the Eye instead of the activated item. That 550 combine cost is so efficient for the stats that you get-which helps you get the Boots, Luden's Ekko and other items you'll need to carry the game that much faster with. Upgrading to the Eye doesn't reduce the amount of gold you get from it either- so especially with Eye of the Watcher, you can get that extra gold from harass while killing minions all that much earlier. I don't know about you, but I always make sure to "accidently" nab a few CS here and there! I wish that Eye of the Equinox had the CDR on it, too; but I can understand why it doesn't. The worse thing about that item, though, is how so many people don't let you execute minions for them. That's what makes Amumu support so good later game; you can run up ahead of your greedy laners, bunch up the minions and then tantrum before they get a chance to wave clear. Take it, %#@$!

Freeing up the extra inventory slot is really a big deal. As Deficio always has to remind us; it's very important to bring a Mana Biscuit with you out on to the Rift, in case you get hungry and need a snack. Having to B because you feel a little peckish can throw the game. Always make sure your Support is well fed.

The Eye items are meant to be item efficient and provide more itemization for later stages in the game, combining to utility items into one. The problem however, is what item(s) can you use in order to make up for some invaluable passive and active effects of the final gold income item. item 3092 active is irreplaceable and the passive where you can take cs without losing its passive effect makes it almost impossible to not get, being utility efficient. item 3069 and item 3401 are more easily replaceable for the combined eye though, since other items can be used instead and provide a similar active effect, though it means it actually will take longer to get those actives because building an entirely new item takes longer than just upgrading the gold income one fully.

So I can agree with getting the Eye upgrades for both item 2303 and item 2302 , but I believe that item 3092 is far too valuable to have, though that's just my personal preference.

Btw, I agree with you with the passive with item 2303 and item 3401 , later stages in the game, your allies just kill all the minions too fast (to push quickly) and don't allow you to make use of the passive effectively. That is infuriating to deal with, since it's a loss of gold income for the support that builds item 3302 as a starting gold income item and must expand on it.
