the Letter ranking system confuses me more than ever.

In this match, I get an S- http://matchhistory.na.leagueoflegends.com/en/#match-details/NA1/2229476294/208450390?tab=overview

in this one, I get an A- http://matchhistory.na.leagueoflegends.com/en/#match-details/NA1/2229497947/208450390?tab=overview

not that I'm complaining about getting S- or A-, but certainly in the first one I didn't do nearly as good as the second one, I missed a lot of farm from yi doing Q's early, pushing his wave, and chunking my hp down with said Q's while he healed constantly with his lifesteal and autos. I was mildly safe under tower since he was too scared to go in because shen obviously, but still I lost a lot of farm. My one death was from Shaco coming in with ignite E just as I dashed and flashed away... damn shiv did a 90 degree turn mid air... dammit league physics.

nest fight was a bit easier because malph uses a decent chunk of mana for his Q which he kept trying to harass me with and then got low on mana fast, he was pretty easy to ignore and I Just used my Q to last hit and push the lane to deny him farm on his turret. I thought overall I did better the second match but apparently not.

Riot, please...... what are you guys using to come up with these letter grades.

A lucian goes 50/0/100 with 800 farm. If the average is 20/3/20 with 300 farm, that one in a million game raises the bar because grades are determined by other games in the same role.

The system is extremely flawed, EXTREMELY flawed, because over time it just becomes more and more difficult to hit that S tier and its not properly communicated anywhere just how to get good scores.

If riot posted clearly just what were actually graded, we could play better because we actually know what to do.

Imagine there are only 100 people playing LoL. Ranking is sorting those 100 people into an order from top to bottom.

in an actual ranking system like that this system would be fine. S rank would be the top 10%.

But we know thats not the case because we get number scores which are assigned a letter grade. the system is more so based on "scores are pooled and averaged" but over time, outliers will greatly raise the average. this is why the system is flawed long term; the S-ranks need to be purged every so often or else you get into a problem where 16/0/10 with 200 farm and 15 wards placed gets you an A-.

There are outliers on the bottom end too. Those 0/20/0 with 10 cs feeder matches do marginally make it easier for others on that champ/role.

Also it works on percentile performance, rather than relative to average anyway. So if the best performance ever was 1000/0/2000 with 10000 farm, that'd have the same amount of impact on peoples grades as if 100/0/200 with 1000 farm was the best. Both are pretty much unachievable and so would forever represent the barrier to the top 0.000001%, but getting into the top 2% would be equally easy in both cases.

This is the difference between Average and Median:

  • Average is the score as it would look if everyone got an equal share. It is usually matched with the standard deviation from average, a measure of typically how far away from that average an individual is.
  • Median is the score at which half the players are above and half the players are below.

it is determined by what role you get put into and what champion you have and it compares your scores with everyone in your elo

With everyone period. ELO/MMR is not a factor.

Well, you did die more in the second one.

I only died once, and that was in the first one where I got S-.

that sounds kind of bad because then the more people get S, the harder it becomes to get S, which means people at the bottom are screwed because getting S is more out of their reach and even if they play well its all too possible that others have set the bar much higher and the only way to lower it is for people to get bad scores and lower the average, but then the good players will keep the average high so it seems like it becomes a game of keep-away and that's not cool.
