Taliyah nerfs and why it was handled so poorly throughout her lifespan.

So I'm a dedicated Taliyah main with 159k Mastery Points so these are just my two cents.

So as we're aware from patch 6.18, Taliyah is receiving her 3rd nerf in a row. This hurts her ability to waveclear and roam with little to no thought. I think it's justified since it makes her boring to play and boring to watch. No one wants to see her spam Q 24/7 and no one likes a champ who spams Q until something happens.

"But what about her E and W! Those are important!"

This is why the nerf was handled so poorly. There are absolutely no compensation buffs. Not even QoL changes to E or W. Since her OP waveclear Q spell is back to what it's supposed to be (Which is meant to be used as Cover Fire, poke, or follow up.), it's going to make her laning phase a bit harder.

"But why is it handled so poorly? She'd be back to release day! Isn't that ok?"

Yes. She is back to release day. At first glance at least. With a MUCH weaker E and a weird to use W that basically divided Taliyah's playerbase. E and W's mana costs aren't any lower than they were on release and they are weaker in more ways than one. W is awkward to aim with the way it's programmed and E got nerfed even further, making it only good for extra DPS once someone is thrown from W.

This takes away E's purpose as a zoning skill because it gives no incentive to be used as a "zone" at all. Throwing down E and then annoying people with Q and W is how Taliyah is supposed to zone people. It's her own unique way to lock opponents down for her team to follow up. Why throw down E anymore when it's not going to do anything against Tank Yasuo, Tanky Bruiser Graves, Tank Ekko, and Tank RekSai. You're just going into their range to die. E isn't going to even scratch them even if you throw them into it with W (Which you probably wont since no competent player gets hit by that thing anymore.).

"Yeah! She can still do that now! What's your point?"

My point is that she isn't anywhere near as effective as she was on release, and that was when she was considered garbage. Her Q is reverted, which means she no longer has that pushing power. Her E and W were fondled with and aren't very relevant anymore, which means she can't zone as well.

So, what can she do? Why pick her over TwistedFate, Anivia, Orianna, Syndra, Cassiopeia, or Lissandra? What can she do that these other 6 mid champs cannot? She can punish gapclosing-happy players better? Not anymore. She can roam better? Not anymore. Her late game is already quite bad with how Worked Ground messes with her ability to fight in large teamfights. E and W fixes that issue with their huge damage potential and flexible peeling abilities. Now that's gone, what is she going to do?

I would really prefer if Lockout was brought back, but only lock out E. It would justify her original damage on E and would not make her kit clunky since Q and R can still be cast. W should cast when left click is held down so actual Taliyah players would get the old feeling back and newer Taliyah players can stop saying how it's clunky even if it wasn't in the first place.

What can she do that all these other mages can't?

Um...

Separate the entire enemy team from half the map away...That's still untouched and very relevant.

It's easily preempted with how much time it takes for the wall to travel. Even then any enemies with gapclosers can easily escape since nothing is stopping them most of the time. E definitely wont stop gapclosing enemies with a decent amount of MR and HP.

If that's down, then she wont be very useful. Control mages like Orianna and Anivia can teamfight much better with teammates with a lower chance of discord among team coordination. A roamer like TwistedFate can pick people off much more effectively and gains info by revealing all enemies regardless of where they are. Cassiopeia can even disable any mobility skill. It's the fact that Taliyah doesn't have anything else makes her kit extremely unhealthy by putting all eggs in one basket. She has to rely on her wall or else she'd be non-existent in teamfights. In her current state at least.

If you can't do anything about the massive, blaringly obvious wall line that appears on the ground she's heading towards, that's entirely your own problem.

Other mages can split apart teams far easier as well without risking the chance of fucking up their own team anywhere near as much.

Yeah, so then her identity is a pubstomper that shits on low elo and solo queue with no communication.

This nerf just makes her less overbearing at higher ranks so that the lower ranks don't actually have their champion nerfed.

People in low elo wouldn't even know how to use her lol. Lockout made her work for the damage and that's what made her have such a high skill floor. She was a double-edged sword who rewarded patient players and punished hasty players.

The nerfs made her unable to fulfill her role as a Disruption mage. She is still able to use movement speed to her advantage (Thank goodness.), but her E and W are very impractical after patch 6.14, especially when everyone and their mothers build resistances. Her damage just falls off a cliff when teamfighting starts.
