Best, as in, most resilient, I guess Braum. At least his whole kit revolves around him being the sturdiest wall this side of the rift. Second I'd guess it's Leona.

For top lane there are less generalist tanks, that is, tanks that are good vs both AP and AD damage. For AD, malphite is surely the best tank out there, none should come close to him. For AP I'd say Maokai, or Mundo. Though Mundo is a juggernaut and not a tank, in terms of resistance his passive, E-passive, and ult offer a lot of survivability especially vs AP champions. Maokai's passive is stronger the more enemy spellcasters you face, and has very good CC.

Then there's Galio, another - supposedly - anti-AP tank. But his kit and itemisation are weird, so I rather not talk about him, although he's still strong vs an enemy AP comp.

All that takes into consideration the sole ability to resist damage. If you also want to consider CC and in general the ability to initiate a fight and/or lock down a specific target, then it's more complicated.

But, if you're simply for an easy to play tank that is still very strong, for Top I'd say Sion or Malphite (this one only if there are at least 3 AD enemies, if there are 4-5 it's 90% a win)

For support, I'd say either Braum or Leona : Braum is more passive, works well with ADCs that start slow, or those who work well with his passive (Lucian ). Leona is more aggressive, but she's still tanky enough to survive some all-ins even if your lane buddy doesn't follow you; still you probably want to play her alongside a champion with a strong early game, like Draven or Mordekaiser

Best tank overall in the support position? I would say that if you're playing with/against an AD carry, or anyone with ranged burst/engage that you can block, then the #1 tank support would be Braum. Big CC while also soaking huge amounts of damage with Unbreakable.

For top it would depend on if you're looking for a full-on tank champion, or if you wanted a champion that can do damage also. Assuming that you're just looking for a full tank then I think Sion might be my choice. He's a big boi with a lot of disruption in team fights via CC, and can get pretty crazy tank in the last game. Other people might say Ornn, but I think it's not good to pick up casually, and his win rate is showing really low in solo queue now with all the adjustments to get him in line competitively. Some may also say Mundo, and while his win rate is pretty high he doesn't offer much crowd control in a team fight. He just runs it down and hopes that his R out heals everything and can zone/solo the carry.

I don't play pure tanks as much as I used to, so I am curious what others will say. I'm basing my opinions on their kits, and what I've seen them do recently.

My favorite tanks are Maokai and Nautilus . They both have massive amounts of CC, AoE damage, sustain tools (heal and shield) and most importantly for my tastes is point and click cc to counter champions like Yi and Kat.

Currently the tankiest champion in a team fight is probably TahmKench . He can essentially double his health by pressing E at rank 1 meaning he can easily have 10k HP.

I think Tahm, Ornn, Maokai, in no particular order.

Garen and Mundo following after. Their health regen is good.

Support: Taric as Warden, Poppy as Vanguard (maybe?)

Top: Singed, Malphite, Maokai

Jungle: Singed, Poppy, Nunu

Based off of win rates from champion.gg for Plat+ (I know, unreliable source, but I'm not familiar with other sources).

I was about to chime in with my own thoughts until I saw I already did so about a year ago.

Now that Ive gotten a little bit better at the game despite making idiotic decisions still, I'll update my response for season 9 supports.

Support: As far as tank supports, they can be seperated into Hook supports, Siege supports, and Warden supports.

Hook supports, like Blitz, Thresh, and Nautilus, are vanguards that engage teamfights by isolating an enemy champion from their team.

Siege supports (as I like to call them), like Leona, Alistar, and even Sion, are vanguards that engage teamfights by flinging themselves into the enemy team and applying as much CC as possible.

Warden supports, like Tahm Kench, Taric, and Braum, are, well, wardens that don't necessarily engage fights, but can peel for their allies.

In this way, hook supports are checked by siege supports, siege supports are checked by warden supports, and warden supports are checked by hook supports. I say 'checked' because the matchup becomes more difficult, but not unwinnable.
