So stupid how this feature is supposed to speed things along in the matchmaking process, while it takes me 30 minutes to find a game because every other person forgets to lock in a ban or a champion when they clearly are not afk because they managed to click on the champion they want to play or ban. this feature makes no sense and wastes far more time than it saves. end rant.

AFK checks are good things

First all ten people have to pass an AFK check just to get a lobby. Then six people have to pass another AFK check to ban six champions. Then all ten people have to pass another AFK check to lock their champions.

So that's a total of twenty-six AFK checks spread across ten players. You're telling me that's really the most elegant design Riot could come up with? A multibillion dollar software company with all of its essentially limitless resources focused like a laser on this single game...

I mean, do you really want someone afk on your team that starts in 3 min or a team that's not afk that starts in 10?

This will remedy itself over time. As people get used to the procedure they will remember to lock in. Behavioral habits take time to sink in.
