They're not designed for it. Spirit Fire has a brief animation but no real delay to allow enemies to dodge it, because the expectation is that he's just creating an area to fight in with autoattacks and Q. With AP items including Liandry's, it becomes very strong harass and an area-denial tool. Malphite's R has a travel time, but it's generally tuned to guarantee a hit on anyone who isn't ready to Flash at a moment's notice, and then he can easily land Q and E, and maybe an auto. With AP items including Luden's and LB, this is easily enough to kill his main squishy target, also weakening nearby enemies.

Did you neglect to ask about AP Shyv because you forgot or because you believe the answer would be obvious?

Actually. They are. Lets not forget that both champs ap build fall of late game. Really badly.

They are? I'm pretty sure Nasus is designed to build tanky items, stack Q damage, and then use his W to stick to targets for consistent autoattacks and Q hits (amplified by E) while his defensive build keeps him alive. Similarly, I'm under the impression that Malphite is designed to build tanky items as well (with a focus on armor), and then use his massive CC to disrupt the enemy lines, while his defensive build lets him survive being surrounded by enemies as his allies deal damage.

No one said nasus should build tanky.

No one, sure. Other than Riot (via recommended items) and most guides, of course. I get the feeling you're trolling at this point.

you base your argument with recommended items?

recommended items are what's META

and what guides riot did :)?

You don't know how to Google, and you don't know how to click a Let Me Google That For You link. Too bad there's no Let Me Let Me Google That For You. I guess they never expected anyone to be quite that dense.

letsfeedtogether1 votes

Oh yes i do. You said "Riot (via recommended items) and most guides" the guides on google arent made by riot. So plz. Give me the guide.

IAintDarius4 votes

Are you seriously stalling an argument by screaming for someone to give you a source for Nasus being designed to be a bruiser?

letsfeedtogether1 votes

Dont blame your miss spelling on me. You for real said "Riot (via recommended items) and most guides" meaning. Riot did via items AND guides. You for real said AND so plz. Dont you dare tell me i was wrong when you for real said RIOT DID VIA GUIDES

Wrong. That's not what that means. You are the only one here who thinks it's what that means. Everyone else here knows what the word "and" means and understands parentheses.

What the OP means by riot and most guides. it means that riot recommends nasus to build mostly tanky. and so most player writtig guides.

You miss read his or her statements. and btw, yeh, ap nasus, malphite, etc, fall of the cliff if they don't snowball ahead.

Saianna1 votes

I'm pretty sure that if Riot didn't want AP nasus/malphite they'd nerf their AP ratios to the ground. In case of Nasus building Ap is niche pick that's great for harrassing early, but if didn't get the lead early you fall off to non-existing state lategame. Oh also AP nasus is super fragile. If enemy just will go through the field Nasus has no way of surviving other than panic run under turret.

AP Malphite is pretty much the only way to actually play him, cause tank items suck ass and only get worse as the game progresses.

Btw Garen was labbeled as an ASSASSIN wehn he was relased cause his brush-Q-E was so deadly lol :D

Btw calm down with you hate on ap-nasus.

That's one way to play him, sure, but I've had a lot of success playing AP Nasus in ARAM, which is the suggested build there. The larger point would be that suggested builds are just that: suggestions. Riot expects players to explore the items for synergies. In fact, they update the suggested items so rarely that their builds are actively bad.

"Massive CC" one knockup every 90 seconds.

You are only now realising it is not WORTH to build tanky? That's why everyone is building damage, tanky builds do not work. You are better off going full damage and trying to burst the enemy down.

KVbqbFsC8e1 votes

Thats not comparable to Sunfire/IBG Ekko/Fizz. They were both meta picks that were very common, very powerful, and extremely difficult to kill. You don't see AP Nasus or Malphite often because they are both very easy to kill, nor are they powerful picks.

Saezio1 votes

They are strong vs not coordinated play, they are trash against people that know all they need to do is not give them an easy engage(for malph) or free poke(for nasus). They can't push a lane because they are 1v1 killed easily by almost any top/mid laner and they have 0 ways to avoid a collapse.

Compare that to bruiser fizz/ekko, that can freely perma split a lane and pretty much dodge any 2v1 attempt by the enemy while at the same time being able to 1v1 almost anyone while at the same time being able to disrupt teamfights like gods. Seriously, even if they had 0 ap in their build, if they decided to simply run and auto an adc there was no way to peel the ADC other than "kill the fucker".

You know what the main difference is? Ekko and Fizz were high elo/pro problems because they had win conditions all over the place. Ap nasus/malp have ONE FUCKING WAY to play the game, and they become non-existing if all the stars don't align. Now, in sub-plat games, it's like the enemy players are trying to make their opponent's pick work. xD

P.S. AP shyvana is actually in a good place, not broken, not underpowered and if you allow her to stay relevant and get to item 3020 item 1402 item 3115 without setting her back at all it means she will have a strong presence and oneshot squishies. (I am speaking maybe 1 patch behind, haven't played/watched a lot in the last 2-3 weeks)

Meteora7071 votes

why the fuck do you think malphite has better ap ratios on his rotation than burst mages and his ap ratios were recently buffed if his not meant to build ap?

Ackelope1 votes

see, as annoying as it is, your argument starts to fall apart when you realize that AP nasus sucks ass and about 99% of nasus players build almost full-tank, because they've realized that bursting people every 10+ seconds with a short-range ability that's pretty easy to hit, and being able to do almost nothing else, is pretty awful, when you compare it to 1k damage Qs and immense splitpushing power.

AP shyvana and AP malphite works because their kits have more ways to work around it: malphite's burst and scaling across all of his abilities is very high, and the raw damage that AP shyvana can deal due to her dragon form aoe dot field is much higher than anything nasus could ever hope to do in similar conditions. Still, both of these builds generally begin to fall over the higher you get in levels of play, because they're all based around (comparitively) extremely long cooldown abilities to work and have little else to rely on, and become extremely squishy if they mess up, with very little ability to escape or play around the opponent.

i really don't think it's worth spending time complaining about this.

Saezio1 votes

You are correct in almost everything.

But Harvest AP shyvana shines in the late game more than any other part of the game. She doesn't fall off, due to her huge E range in dragon form, and late game when you have runic nashor morelo dcap you can pretty much RE delete a carry and any squishy stupid enough to stay close to them. Even in challenger this build works nicely because it's weakness is very team oriented. Namely she has next to zero presence before getting her R(but she can run away from a 1v1 fight with a jungler so you need lane assistance to put her behind) and later she is vulnerable if you pin her to one place and she can't farm her R fast enough.

Infernape4 votes

It's funny how AP Malphite is better at bursting champs than Ekko lol

jocomotion2 votes

The difference is when fizz and Ekko built tank items they where able to still deal enough damage to kill their target and ALWAYS escape, lowering their skill cap and increasing their effectiveness at the same time

Meanwhile AP Malphite, Nasus, And Shyvanna are considered troll because they sacrifice so much for gimmicky damage on like two spells.

Jerry SeinfeId1 votes

i don't see the issue with malphite here. He's a burst mage or ap diver would be more accurate i suppose.

Schoenberg1 votes

Pretty sure tank Fizz/Ekko were more cancerous than any of those could ever be.
