Is it just me or are assassins seeming very unsatisfying as of late?

DarkfireAM··14 votes·1,691 views

I'v loved playing assassins really since I started playing leauge back in Season 4, but now as the preseason has started I have started to see that I am having not nearly as much success with them as I used to.

Probally might be because of my recent 6 GAME LOSING SPREE, but I just wanted to see if anyone else felt the same :)

I felt unsatisfied when the brutalizer was removed, and LW changed, but I've worked around that, and with thunder lords, I've found my main ( Zed ) much more satisfying to play. Although that partially has to do with the buffs. Yi is the same as ever, and I can't really speak for the other assassins, but I feel yasuo is much the same, if not stronger, though talon Isn't very common, and neither is kha (what buffs). So I'm satisfied, but i think the assassins could use some love. That being said, I wouldn't want them to become overly strong, so I'm kinda hesitant with that. I think they didn't need to buff kha or zed, just work on the items and build paths, thats the only real problem.

I have had the opportunity to play Zed, and I do find like you were saying the removal of bruitizer to be very imapctful on my early game damage

Originally it was for me too, but if you build item 3134 and have thunderlords, it's actually quite potent.

Wow really? :O

Hm I guess I have been building the wrong item first. I start of by getting that new hammer thingy that was a psdo-replacement for bruitilizer. Is that bot the correct build path I should start off with?

item 3133 isn't as much of a replacement because it adds cd reduction, while item 3134 adds armour pen, which imo is better. I usually rush item 3134 item 3240

then the rest is dependent on my laner and what they're building. If being bullied by ap, hex drinker is core, i start building BOTRK otherwise.

Oh ok thanks for the assistence, ill try that out on Zed when I have the chance and see what success I can get. Do you have any advice for a champ like rengar oulr would it be all around the same build? I'v seem some people get rapidfire and others build soulreaver, I really have so idea where this builds are coming from T-T

I have no idea how to build or play rengar haha. I played him once and did decently, but zed has all my love. You'd have to post another thread asking for specific advice on him.

Spaceman5pff1 votes

My current rengar build: Red smite warrior, ghostblade, Ionians, RFC, IE, and either Ravenous or Triforce depending on if we need a splitpusher. Sometimes I get a 2nd IE if I'm feeling frisky.

Much apreciated I'll try that build out as well :)

I just hit rank 5 mastery with Rengar this preseason, and here's how i build him:

AD, AS, Armor, and CDR runes 12-18-0 masteries (thunderlords)(can also go 18-12-0 with fervor, but not quite as bursty)

Start machete + 3 pots, and after i complete item 1412 , the items i go for are:

item 3142 (even better for Rengar now, and active so useful during ult) item 3742 (Tank items are situational, but this is the most optimal one) item 3071 (Rengar needs every stat) item 3117 / item 3158 (mobis if you're even, CD boots if you're fed so you can ult more often)

Other good items: item 3074 (not as good to rush anymore, but still very strong once completed) item 3036 (if you're falling behind a tank-heavy comp) item 3156 / item 3065 (for MR)

If you find yourself falling behind, it's not a bad idea to pick up 2 or 3 tank items (typical stuff). I haven't tried rapid fire cannon, so i can't judge it's effectiveness.

If you want other general playtips, just let me know :)

DarkfireAM1 votes

Well twi buring question I have about Rengar as how you typically gank with him pre6, and what do you do if the opportunities for ganks never arise?

My second question is what items do I need and what specific combo should I use to prefirm an effective one-shot? I'v played rengar enough to Mastery 5 but no matter how may times I get fed I can never actually onshot anyone, not even the super behind enemy AD carry. Other then that I thank you and every on this thread for ypur opinions and advice, and overall not flaming. :)

Merxamers1 votes

Rengo ganks pre-6 aren't great, but any jungler is a great ganker when they're overextended. Try to always have 5 ferocity for the empowered E (bola); the root will at least force a flash, if landed. If you can catch the enemy jungler when low, you can probably kill them as well. You can also attempt to "lane-gank' if your lane is pushing, since you can leap out of the bushes pretty well.

When using your ult, a one-shot is tricky but here's how to do it (as best as i can figure):

  1. Make sure you have 5 ferocity, and that target isn't baiting you.

  2. Use ult far enough away that they don't spot you before you get close, and as you approach use item 3142 active

  3. Making sure they're out of their minions, auto them to leap at them, BUT while you are mid-air, use your empowered E to root them (you CAN do this; this is why you should avoid minions if you can)

  4. Once you leap on them while they are rooted, mash your other buttons (including item 3074 active, if you have it). Your ferocity will recover back to 5 quickly, so you can either root them again, knife them, or use empowered W to heal (if you have to run away).

That's how to do it! Landing the root is important, otherwise it's hard to keep them from running away from you.

DarkfireAM2 votes

Ah, I see I see. I actually noticed that I did more damge overall if I rooted then first instead of going for the the empowered q first. This really helps to bring spme clarity

(more then any of the 10min Youtube videos felt to adress). Hopfully now I can 1-shot that twitch before he just goes invisible and walks away :p

item 3133 is not a pseudo replacement for Bruta. It's just that Bruta was split in 2 items: item 3133 and item 3134

One has the CDR, the other has the Flat ArPen. And Youmuu, who was the only Bruta upgrade before pre-season now builds from merging the 2 half of Bruta replacement.

The half with CDR is now used for a lot of items, but I find it surprising that the part with ArPen isn't used in Black Cleaver, which just gains it's ArPen from nowhere. On the other hand, they added ArPen to Maw of Malmorticus, and I don't understand why.

Spizzle90001 votes

Agreed. I think the penetration added to item 3156 was because assassins don't really have that many choices for items that allow them to do damage AND give a bit of defense, but Maw has that covered now (yes I know there's QSS and Mercurial, but Maw has a shield and now armor pen).

DeathBurst1 votes

Mercurial is not good for Assassins (they don't aa, so they don't want lifesteal), so I agree they needed items with mixed offense/defense. I just don't understand the rationale behind adding ArPen to a somewhat defensive item.

Mercurial is sometimes necessary to assassinate CC-champions.

Penetration on a somewhat defensive item is nothing special. Think of Black Cleaver, Abyssal, Liandries.

If you think they didn't need to buff Zed's shadow after that bugfix then you really don't main Zed. Every Zed player felt the huge difference, litterally felt like you were just lagging.

His shadow needed the speed buff, not the distance travelled increased, and not the ult damage increased.

Lmfao, these wannabe zed mains.

The range buff on W was 100% justified, because the missle speed buff was so small. If they didn't buff the range, then it should hav ebeen 2500 missle speed (original W speed) buff. Zed had 41-42% winrate after WQ fast combo/bug fix, anyone who says he didn't buffs is clueless.

  1. You are not a zed main, you are a wannabe.
  2. His W needed both range and speed buff, if no range buff, then revert to release state W would be only acceptable other option.
  3. Ult damage buff is irrelevant.
  4. If no W range buff, then other buffs, possibly to his AS would have been required.
  5. Zed had 42% winrate post-nerf and needed the buffs, you are delusional.

Shonjl4 votes

I have mixed feelings on this.

The assassins job is to delete someone. Their job isn't deleting half a team. So its hard to balance them

Zed is what an assassin should be, Katarina is a disgrace she can R in the middle of a team and kill everyone. That isn't what assassins are suppose to do.

Spaceman5pff2 votes

To be fair she has to be really fed to do that without resets. And her feast / famine nature does a good job of making her very risky to pick, thus balanced.

For example, xerath is so safe, he doesn't have to snowball to be worth having on your team.

Baunjo2 votes

I love it when people decide how things in a game should be designed on their own.

Shonjl5 votes

Its not what people decide, look it up yourself. Its not hard to find what Riot wants their champs or type of champ to be able to do.

Assassins jobs are to assassinate people, to pick people off. Jumping into 5 people and killing all of them isn't assassinating.

And if that isn't reason enough. Look why Zed is always in the spotlight while other Sins like KAta aren't. Zed is a healthy assassin as much as I hate a fed Zed. Kata not so much :L. Take it for what you think. Not my job to make you change your mind. Just going off my own opinion and info I saw over time.

darkmatchwaldo2 votes

Kat can't jut waltz right in and ult a team unless you somehow drafted a team with negative CC. When she does ult, it's to pick off some low health targets and cleanup. Sounds like what an assassin should do to me.

Baunjo1 votes

Well if we want to get really into correct definitions assassin doesn't even apply to this game because it includes " for political reasons " as part of the definition.

There are plenty of other champions that can destroy 5 people, " assassin " is not a term that limits this by any means. You clearly just have a problem with this role specifically.

Vekkna3 votes

Katarina is a disgrace she can R in the middle of a team, eat 1 cc, and then do effectively 0 damage.

Fixed.

i feel ad assassins are weaker atm, while ap assassins are generally unaffected.

Yea I noticed that as well, since when I played Ekko he felt pretty much unaffected

it kinda sucks, considering some of my favorite picks are zed talon and rengar

Spaceman5pff1 votes

Oh don't you worry about rengar. rengar is not having ANY issues atm.

Have you tried item 1412 item 3158 item 3142 item 3094 item 3031 item 3078

insaiyanbacca1 votes

huh, i'll have to try that. tho tbh i'll probly replace tri with like hydra or something, never liked tri on rengar

Spaceman5pff1 votes

I like tri now that ap is gone in favor of cdr. The movespeed and attack speed are nice as well as the phage proc Plus crit chance.

I must say though, if you have a bad history with RNJesus and crit, hydra is likely the better choice still.

insaiyanbacca1 votes

eh typically rngesus loves me, but tri just doesnt seem to give me that oomf i like, i'll try it tho see how i like it before i judge

Spaceman5pff1 votes

Yeah it's def all preference. That's why rengar is great, he has great build diversity for an ad assassin

insaiyanbacca1 votes

yeah, he's a pretty flexible compared to other assassins. wish kha was nearly as flexible tbh.

Spaceman5pff1 votes

I wish kha still felt good to play! I spammed him SO hard in ranked this past spring

YumaS2Astral1 votes

i feel ad assassins are weaker atm, while ap assassins are generally unaffected.

This is because AD assassins have their own itemization that is completely different from the rest of champions, while AP assassins generally share their itemization with mages.

So when mages have their itemization nerfed, AP assassins are nerfed too.

Rundus11 votes

I've heard rumors of the mage rework coming soon, and I've heard that the assassins are next. After the nightmare of Assassin Meta season 4, I hope they writhe in pitiful agony until their rework. By that point I will feel significantly better with the idea of seeing more Zeds. As of now, they aren't amazing, but they still tick me off so I play Malz for them (I love ulting a just-ulted zed). After a little more dirt time, you'll get your time. The assassins were strong. The tanks were strong. The Ap itemization was super strong. The Juggernauts were super strong. The ADC's became quite strong, and now the game is at a fun little spot where everyone is semi-decent at least (with 1 or two exceptions). Soon the immobile mages will come through a little more. Then, after they become a horrid nuisance, they will call the assassins back once more. Probably late season 6 or early season 7. Just wait. Your time is coming, friend. As for me, I like Malz and Mundo. My time is here. My time is now.

DarkfireAM2 votes

XD this post made me laugh so damn hard! I really hate when I'm just a poor defencless Assassin and out of no where a Malzahar comes and infects me with deadly aid and I die. Its people like you that is why we assassins cant have nice things haha. But honestly I am a little excited for the assassin rework as I belive some Assassins need some gameplay re-adjustments to make them more diverse and overall unique in their playstyles. Besides dont worry you Malz mains will be laughing quietly behind your monitor at the pain and missforune of us Assassin mains T-T

Rundus11 votes

Im actually a support main by trade. I just learned other roles in season 5 and I was abused horribly, but not so bad as I was trying to learn in the assassin meta of season 4. Keeping in mind that they may return, most of my pick-ups were specifically for assassins. I got Heimer, Malz, Mundo, Shaco (the only assassin I condone), and Sion. The hard part was adapting them to a non-assassin meta just after buying them to deal with the assassin meta, but when it returns (and I'm sure it will), I will be there, smiling and waving a cleaver or a hand full of aids at the approaching challenge (unless they make a new assassin with a silence. Then malz is screwed)
