Giving that much freedom to people who are on steroids will only create zomgwtfbbqlcsflashyplays. At least point and click actually requires you to point at your target, identify your target, analyze the range, and confirm the click. Skill shot on the other hands is more like oh look its there; spam!

Maybe in lower Elo that's the case but skillshots still require thought too. Don't get me wrong, I'm against the move from targeted spells (point and click) to skillshots too, I think it's good to have a mixture of both, but your argument is simply wrong.
