can someone explain placements to me?

Im really not understanding how ranked placements work. My threes team won 3/5 games, with only one game where we had less than great scores. We were placed into Bronze 5. Can someone explain to me how we got into that placement? I thought it worked by how many games you win or lose, but I'm seeing that that isn't the case.
