Pantheon and the phalanx

For those of you who don't know, the phalanx is a battle formation frequently used by hoplites in which soldiers at the front would form a shield wall, and the soldiers behind them would stick their weapons over the first guys. Each soldier at the front would also protect not only himself but his neighbour with his shield. This meant that in order for the formation of the phalanx to be preserved, every soldier must know exactly what's going on. The phalanx also usually moved slowly to avoid breaking formation. The whole point of the phalanx is to discourage enemies, as it was essentially a mass of shields and bristling spears.

Right now, Pantheon does none of this. His shield provides protection for only himself, and he does not hesitate to leap into the fray of the battle, and action that if performed with a phalanx, would break apart the formation and leave the soldiers vulnerable. There is nothing honourable or even "artistic" about endangering your fellow soldiers for some stupid attempt and heroics, and right now, that is exactly what Pantheon does.

I'm sure I'm not the only one who finds Pantheon extremely boring to play. Generally, his only counterplay is "wait until he's useless, then destroy him, which isn't fun for the opponent or the Pantheon player (once that times does arrive). He's a walking meat sack in teamfights, with a single target stun and sub-par damage. He can split-push and still arrive at teamfights with his ultimate, which doesn't seem to fit very well.

I've always wanted to rework Pantheon into a juggernaut-type character that could provide more peel to his teammates. It fits thematically with the slow-moving but nonetheless deadly formation, and would perhaps make him more interesting to play, as well as more useful later on in the game. Of course, certain aspects of his current kit would have to be removed or updated.

As for actual changes to his kit, I was thinking of changing his W into more of a defensive spell, not unlike Braum E or perhaps even Poppy W. Something that would reinforce the idea of a sluggish but unbreakable formation. His Q could be changed a little as well, as right now, all it is is "click on an enemy to do damage". His ultimate, as much as I hate to admit, has become somewhat iconic to his character and would best remain more or less untouched.

It's been a while since I played Pantheon myself, so I would like to hear what Pantheon players would think about this. And of course, I am open to advice and criticism from higher elo players, because as a low elo scrub, I have no way of predicting what kind of effect this new sort of playstyle would have on Pantheon's state of balance.

Also, this is a thread from which I took quite a bit of inspiration in coming up with this: http://boards.na.leagueoflegends.com/en/c/gameplay-balance/oBZfrn4b-just-an-idea-pantheon-related

I can see his Q being turned into a skillshot. His W might be turned into an offensive version of Braum's shield. E might be changed to a circular AOE attack.

turn his Q into a longer range and slightly faster piercing skillshot (maybe 700).

turn his ult into something like: phalanx formation. Pantheon assumes a defensive stance for 5/7/9 seconds. his movespeed is slowed by 50/40/30% but during this time his passive will refresh every 3 spells or autoattacks instead and Heartseeker Strike`s cooldown is halved.

tl;dr

Summoners don't fight in a phalanx.
