I finally colected 10 gems
And given the time I've spent collecting them I feel no skin I purchase with them will ever be worth it. I don't want to spend my gems afraid one day they will make a skin for Graves or another champion I like.

I got 10 of them and turned them into boxes. Got all the ultimate skins, 3 legendary, 2 physical $100 bills, a blowjob from anthony hopkins. AND a fire red hotwheels.

Personally, I would hold onto those. I have like 4 or 5 after 3 years of playing this game. Those things are rare.
And, who knows, a champion you like might be getting a gem stone skin.
I personally used them the moment I received them. While the Hex Skins seem pretty nice, I personally don't think they are that amazing. It's like choosing between a prize and 10 lottery tickets: if the prize isn't amazing, ofc I will go for the tickets.
I would hold onto them until you got like 15-17 gems. That way you're not far off for your next skin, but also don't excessively sit on your gems for no reason.
It seems very likely that you'll be able to get 2 gems with every new event just by playing with the pass. I think that the new event chests also have a much higher chance of dropping gems. I get at least 1 gem if I farmed enough tokens to buy 5-6 chests, that is if you're not farming for the prestige skin though.
Each gemstone can be turned into a chest and key i think. Which is way more worth it unless ur just a OTP of the hextech skin.

Im at 18 gemstones. Still waiting for a Gemstone skin for any of my champions. I wish there would be a list...

Fear of buyer's remorse is a huge problem for me as well. It's exacerbated by the fact that it's often justified, especially in online games. Recent example: a few months ago in Star Trek Online, I earned a token that could be exchanged for any high-level ship in the store, which usually cost $20-30. A few weeks later, while I was still deciding what faction I wanted a ship for, Romulan faction ships became usable by any character of any faction.
As you might have guessed, I still haven't used the token.
