Matchmaking in Ranked so clazy

So I've been noticing in my ranked games as a silver tier player, I'm getting matched up against all golds and sometimes platinum players...making it very difficult to progress. I'm just curious as to why it's setup that way, anyone else experiencing this and feeling like it's flipping a coin win or lose?

I don't play ranked very often, I don't know if riot had explained this already or what but it caught my eye
