Im Quitting Based on What I Read on Riot's Offical Matchmaking Philosophy...

This is why is so hard to climb and you go on losing streaks. I decided to buckle down and get to gold, so I am only playing champions where I really excel. I start doing really well and win my lane in every game. Then after I win about 5-6 games, I going on a crazy losing streak and I was always curious why this happenend. I always thought you were matched based on MMR so when you join a game you would theoretically have a 50% chance of winning, but increase those odds if you do well. That is not the case.

"Each player is assigned a number that represents his skill level (MMR) which is determined by the outcomes of his previous games. With this matchmaking rating, the system will attempt to assemble two teams as fairly as possible to create a game wherein both teams have an equal chance of winning."

https://support.riotgames.com/hc/en-us/articles/201752954-Matchmaking-Guide

This means if you are doing really well at an individual level they will place you on a team with players that haven't been doing as well; therefore, decreasing your chance of success. Instead of placing you on a team with a 50% of getting players with similar skills, they place you on a team with worse skills than you because you have been playing well.

This is why is so damn hard to rank up.

No you're misunderstanding how that works.

Let's say you're in Gold 5 (1500 MMR) but you're on a nice win streak. So maybe your MMR is around a Gold 2 level (1700 MMR).

To make the teams fair, you will often be placed with a bunch of Gold 2 players, because that's where you fit in best.

They don't pair you with a group of opponents on your same level and then balance that by giving you crappy teammates.

That's not how it works.

They place you with opponents that are a much higher MMR than you to even out your team's MMR. Therefore; your opponents are better players than your team because you are boosting the MMR rating.

Let me make this as clear as it possibly can be for you.

THE POINT OF MMR IS THAT YOU WILL GENERALLY GET MATCHED UP AGAINST OPPONENTS CLOSE TO YOUR MMR RATING

That is it.

Now stop being such a fucking drama queen about it.

Or you can think for a second and explain how they dont place you against harder opponents to even out your teams MMR; therefore putting you at a disadvantage. If you are winning a lot and playing well you will be placed against higher level opponents to balance out your teams MMR. So you are bringing a high MMR to your team. Your team is bringing a lower MMR to balance you out. So your team will have worse players than your opponent.

Let's use my example from before, okay?

I think this is how YOU are interpreting match-making: ~ They find five Gold 5 players to be my opponents. ~ Since my MMR is too high, they have to give me a bunch of silver 3 players to balance the MMR on both teams.

That is not how it works.

In the example I gave, you're MMR is around a Gold 2 level. ~ So they find 9 other players around a Gold 2 skill level. (Regardless of the fact that you're in Gold 5) ~ They match the teams up as equally as they can since everyone is around the same skill level. ~ No extreme balancing is required.

I get what you are saying but that is not what is happening. I looked at lolnexus to see my teammates, and the other team always has higher ranked players than my team. Last game for instance

My team Silver1 Silver2 Silver2 Silver2 Unranked

Opponent Gold 5 Silver 1 Silver 1 Silver 1 Silver2

I'm confused. That seems like a very well matched game

Looking at your most recent ranked games on op.gg I see this for the past 3 games:

Your team: S3 S1 S1 S2 S2

Opponents: G5 S2 S1 S3 S3

This one looks pretty balanced to me... Yes, they have a low gold, but they also have two low silvers to balance it out.

Your team: G5 G4 S1 G5 S1

Opponents: S4 G3 G5 S1 G4

Same number of Gold players on each team, but they have this low silver player which kind of stands out. Feels like your team is stronger in this case.

Your Team: S1 S2 S1 S1 S2

Opponents: G5 S1 S2 G5 S1

This pairing is slightly favoring the opponent's team. Still very close though.

I dunno man... I don't see any wild discrepancies :\

It's likely that the S4 player in the second game has a good hidden MMR, hence the pairing with high silver and low golds.

You win a game = your mmr increases = your opponents mmr will be higher.

Rocket science?

They place u with and against high MMR people. If your MMR is high then they make match like this(if we say u are gold 5 and have MMR of gold 2)

Gold 2, gold 1, gold 2, gold 1, gold 5(you) vs Gold 2 gold 1, gold 2, gold 2, gold 1

Somewhat like that. Now, your teammates can say "why the f do we have low gold in team, how is this fair" and you could explain its cuz of your mmr

That is not much better when you have to be several ranks higher in order to get to your real rank or lose a few games so the system can reset itself. I have been there...S2 and playing G1 games, it was fairly stupid.

zepdrix1 votes

I'm not sure what you mean by "your real rank".

You're saying that you acknowledge that you're a silver player and a win streak or something messed up your MMR giving you really difficult games? That's the situation you've found yourself in before?

Ya I guess I can understand your frustration if that's the situation. It takes quite a few games for the system to bring you down to an accurate level.

I really like that it gives you an opportunity to sling shot yourself up in the ranks though. :D You're not playing harder games for nothing. Your wins give big LP gains, and your losses are small LP losses.

I'm actually somewhere in high gold/low plat in level. That's my real rank and since there is no more rewards up until challenge (that is way out of my league) and suddenly having 2 jobs have cut my free time more than what I though it would then I stopped playing as soon as both ladder went into gold. My proms into gold were actually against plat because my MMR was so skewed (also the system dropping me from G4 into B2 from the reset didn't help much either). The games were actually balanced as it was my actual level (instead of the stomping I could do in silver) but it added a few extra games that I could have avoided if we had a single ladder system instead of two ladder working together. Having 80% win rate for around 30 games in silver is not really a wining streak, is just playing outside your real rank.

Did I climb? yeah I did, in relatively short/average time. (80 game for solo and 150 for flex since I was playing solo on both modes) but if my rank had truly been around low gold I would probably have had to double that amount of games to counter the stupid system.

MysterQ1 votes

I was bronze2 in Flex and climbing with 80%+, suddenly my opponent's had a Gold top lane (vs my bronze) and a Plat mid (again vs my bronze). And I know Flex rank is different from solo/duo. But anyone can tell you something is wrong. After losing several games to Gold tops who were just overall much better than me. Freezing, diving, zoning, everything. I lost a lot of games and quit for a few weeks. Then I changed to support and have had easy climbs with better Matchmaking (Until I was like 65%wins at S2 now the matches are very tough but not unwinnable). I don't know what the hell the system was doing thinking I needed to play ridiculously unbalanced matches. I lost a bunch of confidence to go from 80% to losing hard every game (seriously, I lost inhib turret at like 17min once..., but somehow I can at least hold lane vs high bronze/low silver right now).

MysterQ1 votes

Except many people have screens of being Silver/Gold vs like Gold/Plat mixed teams lol.

And you can argue the MMR is what counts not the rank, anyone would say it looks unbalanced.

LyingOnLine3 votes

Or you could read it like somebody who isn't half-blind , and realize that it means as your MMR goes up, you will inevitably be matched against higher-MMR opponents.

To be fair. Old belief was

Since I am a bronze (with silver MMR), in order to balance my bronze team MMR my teammates DO have to suck while my opponents have a much steadier average MMR. And the steady MMR means they can slowly win lanes while you are forced to carry.

I will say sometimes the game feels like that. Because despite people saying MMR is balanced, there are a lot of unbalanced games. People will say look at WR, low plat, dropping plat, etc but in the end it doesn't look nor does it feel balanced. And I would agree that in low ELO a new system would be nice.

Zezockary2 votes

Sometimes, yes. There will be other times where the rest of the players in your game are better than you. They do attempt to get players that have close mmr's, but it is more worried about the mmr of the team and not as much the individual.

You seem to be thinking that you are always going to be matched with people worse than you, that is not the case. If you keep playing well and winning your mmr will raise and you will get better people on your team more often, keep in mind however that your opponents will also get better.

every single match you play the matchmaking tries it's best to pair you with a match that both sides have a 50% chance of winning. This happens every single match. As your MMR increases so does the quality of your opponents but also the quality of your allies, in theory. This doesn't stop games from being one sided since every game is close to having each side with a 50% chance of winning. When this is not the case you lose less/gain more LP and less MMR than you would normally if faced against a team that has a much higher chance of winning than yours and vice versa. You lose more and gain less LP and MMR when faced against teams yours should have a higher chance of winning against.

I am so sorry you are quitting because Riot isn't letting you play against the same bronze 5 players when you are well past bronze 5 territory. i am so sorry that you cannot handle the fact that the game expects you to actually get better to deal with tougher opposition and i am so sorry that you cannot handle dealing with tougher opposition and therefore being sent back down to people who you have proven that you can beat
