Unpopular opinion: experienced players know when to "go next"

KFCeytron··5 votes·876 views

Inexperienced players believe that any match is winnable, even when their team is two minutes away from a crushing defeat. Giving up isn't a very positive attitude, but it is a sign that the player understands the mechanics and strategy of the game such that they have a good idea of which Nexus will eventually explode. I know Boards prefers longer matches, but a 25-minute match where the last 10 minutes is spawn camping and spamming emotes is no more of a strategic braingame than one that ends with a unanimous forfeit at 15 minutes. The only interesting gameplay is that required to decide a match, not necessarily complete it.

Requiring 4 votes to surrender is an insult to a team's superior players.

So unpopular that dozens of threads every week state the same thing.

I see too often ppl in chat "FF @ 15" after 2-3 mins. It's become out of control. People want an easy win or else they'll surrender. If anything, I think ppl have just become lazier and weaker.

The score says it's unpopular.

I get the impression you're one of those two "no" voters in a match that's 5-20 with no objective control. There is a difference between the merely difficult and the impossible, and some players simply cannot tell the difference. Others can tell at minute 5 that it's a loss, but then teammates force the match to drag out to nearly 20, just because they don't understand how stats, gold, etc. work.

Very few people know when it is "go next." People consistently throw games. That is why in Masters, Grand Masters, and Challenger people know it more often. It is because when you get better at the game you make less mistakes and don't allow for comebacks nearly as often.

The reason games are over in the first 10 minutes is because of people's mentality. People die once and just give up because they can't carry even if they can get carried by the team they don't care because they are mentally a 4 year old. "If I can't carry we can't win," what is going on in their heads. Significantly more people that play LoL are like this now and that is a part of why average game times have shortened and why less people play tanks.(I know they are a little bit weak right now but still)

If the community would just stop being 4 years old mentally the game would be a lot more enjoyable for them and for the rest of us, and comebacks would be way more common. So no one knows when to "go next."

I dispute your assertion that the only reason not to surrender is because one thinks that the game is winnable. Especially if it's only two minutes away, the enemy team deserves to finish their game in glory. I'll surrender if it's spawn camping and mastery emotes, sure. But if the enemy team is actively making their final push, I think it's gracious to let them enjoy their triumph.

I agree. Besides, if the enemy team definitely will earn their S ranks but just doesn't have the score for it yet, it's kinda shitty if you surrender, because it robs them of that reward that they would earn with just a bit more time.

I don't agree with the implication that the FF should require less votes, but I do agree with the general sentiment. I don't give up easily but when I do, it is generally because my team is staring down the barrel of a 20 minute slaughter.

I see 3/5 a lot.

Yeah, but that's not fair in a 5v5 team game. It's not large majority, it's just over half of a small team where everyone's vote should count.

I surrender games I think are obviously lost but the 4/5 vote needs to stay.

thats quite an elitist thing to say.

anyway, too many variables in this game = what u propose doesnt hold.

How are my game experience and knowledge relevant to this thread? What prompted you to make this personal?

Because you're saying something that's common sense. "Good players know when the game is over." Yeah no shit.

And that's only done if you think that it makes you look smart or you're trying to justify behavior from a previous game.

Feel free to assign whatever motivation you'd like; I can't stop you.

My personal requirement for early surrender is the base being broken. I generally won't do it until that happens, because the enemy team is demonstrating that they just want to play the kill game and aren't macroing/pushing their lead.

However, I am receptive to being wrong or being part of the problem regarding this. Something that made me think twice about this is a lot of people play at Internet cafes, and I understand it must really suck from that perspective.
