Recent champions released with overloaded kits

Riot has stated multiple times before that they want champions to have defined strengths and weaknesses, and it shows in some of their more recent releases/reworks( Bard /Sion /Ekko are unreliable Gnar requires mastery of the champion and great timing) but there are some very major outliers that are already causing balance headaches. I will go over each of the three champions that i believe were released into the game with no real exploitable weakness.

Azir - The clear fantasy that azir captures is the unit control mage. He spawns units that give him very defined areas of control, which would be fine if he wasnt able to constantly re position them making his area of control much larger than its intended to be. Azir has everything you would want in a control mage. He has burst damage, utility, cc, great teamfighting, aoe, dueling potential, and he is a siege god. There is quite literally zero window for you to exploit a good azir player, and even IF you had an advantage to push against azir, you cant. He has one of the best disengage ults in the game in the same kit as arguably the best late game ap champion . Once he gets ahead or even just completes his first item, he pushes you under tower, punishes you for every minion and spawns his tower over yours after he kills it in a few uses of w. Azir is a lane bully with incredible scaling, utility, and mobility. There needs to be some sort of power trough for him in either the early game OR he should have more defined areas of control with a longer cooldown on q.

Kalista - With more recent changes to kalista she does have a weakness( crit items are no longer very efficient) but i would argue that her strengths and ability to repeatedly engage and chase when ahead overshadow that weakness. So lets talk about some of kalista's potential weaknesses, the first one being that she is single target focused inherently by the design of her kit. this weakness is entirely removed by her buying item 3085 which is core to any kalista build anyways. The only real weakness of Kalista is that now that her autos only do 90% of her ad, crit is not good on her anymore. I do not think this matters because of a few key factors.

  1. Kalista is the best laning adc in the game hands down. Her W makes her the best at short trades, and her E is an amazing execute if you want to all in. It is also very very hard to run away from kalista.
  2. She spikes in damage and effectiveness much earlier than any traditional adc. At two items kalista can steamroll dragon fights and not too long afterwards the game. So to sum things up Kalista has very high dueling potential, is a great lane bully, safe laner (w active), amazing single target damage, decent/situational aoe damage, great initiation and chase, and she is strong where every other adc is weak- early game.

RekSai - Before i start talking about the strengths and weaknesses of reksai, i'm going to lay out the traits that you would want in a jungling champion.

  1. Clear speed
  2. Early game/ skirmishing ability
  3. Gap closer
  4. Map mobility
  5. CC
  6. late game/teamfighting I could argue that reksai grades very well on all of these things. Reksai has literally everything you could want on a jungler, but her map mobility is what really pushes it over the top. The reason that RekSai is so damn strong at every point of the game is because her pressure is unrelenting. Oh, you tried to fight her and lost at about level 7 and she forced you to back? she ults to drag and takes it before you can get there. There has always been a problem with champions with global abilities that can stand up to champions with combat focused ultimates and fight them 1v1 and WIN. Now some people might argue that reksai is not the best teamfighter, which is incorrect in my opinion. Her teamfighting might seem lackluster when she is the primary engage, but her secondary and followup engages are top tier. With cinderhulk she is obscenely tanky and still does a ton of both single target and aoe damage with just item 3071. Notice how i havent even mentioned the completely unique thing that reksai brings to the table that no other champion does- tremor sense. Which is fine. Tremor sense is super cool and very thematically correct for the land shark theme/archetype. Reksai just does too much for one champion. Whereas a regular jungler would probably lack 1 or 2 traits of what an ideal jungler would have, reksai has all that and more.

This post is by no means a condemnation of Riot's champion team or anything of the sort, as both Kalista and Azir are both very flashy champions, but there is something to be said for kalista's w both helping you win lane in every trade AND keeping you safe from ganks. I've been a big fan of many of their recently released champions and their reworks recently have also been stellar, but the champions that i've listed are absolutely infuriating to play against because they are so hard to pin down and punish for their mistakes whereas a normal champion would die, Azir and Kalista are nearly ungankable. It's also worth noting that all 3 of these champions have been constantly in the patch notes because of the problems their kits bring into the game.
