Vladimir: My Predictions

Whenever a champion gets picked in a role outside of their intended, Riot has this nasty habit of hitting both their intended and unwanted play style. You saw what happened with tank Viktor top, in response to his incredible oppressiveness, they both nerfed Viktor top AND mid to the point where mid lane Viktor got so bad that top lane was his only playable role. (And yes, I know they gave him late game buffs, but in a meta like this, where most games are decided in sub 15 minutes, losing out on this much base damage was far more damaging than any late game buffs he could've received.)

Even earlier, you saw what happened with Vladimir bot lane. They nerfed both Vladimir mid and bot, and Vladimir mid was in the shit hole for quite a while, until stuff like Phase Rush and runes giving him 25% free CDR put him back on the spotlight. (Which is where we are now.)

I've been playing full AP Vladimir mid with Electrocute for 3 seasons straight now. I know the what the meta is, but frankly, I don't care. I do it because that's how I enjoy playing him. Even though Vladimir with electrocute is at a 45% winrate right now (according to op.gg), I still play him.

However, recently I had played against a Jax top lane using Phase Rush and was astonished how badly I beat him. It was disgusting. Jax could not do a single thing against me. Any time he jumped on me, Phase Rushed away. Any time he traded with me, I used Q to heal it back while simultaneously poking him. It was nothing like any mid lane match up I've ever encountered.

Important Part

My opinions on what should be done about Vladimir are as follows. I believe Vladimir should be nerfed. Whether or not you believe he is broken either top lane or mid lane, there's no arguing that Vladimir should not exist as a top laner in his current state. I think if Riot is ever gonna get around to nerfing Vladimir, they should go a step further and outright kill top Vladimir in favor of having mid be his only playable role.

How do we force Vladimir out of top lane and into mid lane? Personally I don't know, but I have some ideas.

-Nerf Phase Rush for Ranged Give melee top laners the ability to trade against ranged top laners. This not only nerfs Vladimir but a lot of other annoying top lane champions such as Kennen, Viktor, Ryze.

-Nerf CDR from runes and items. At level 10 Vladimir has access to a full 40% CDR from Transcendance, Protobelt, Zhonyas Hourglass, the CDR stat rune, and Cosmic Insight. This is an insane amount of free CDR that is given to a champion who heavily relies on it.

-Nerf his armor. Pretty self explanatory, Vladimir should be an easier champion to all in.

So, here's my message to Riot. Make Vladimir mid lane his preferred role again. I've been waiting years for it to happen. He's always over shadowed by Vladimir top and bot, and when he isn't, he's terrible. I don't want any more of this toxic "Vladimir auto wins top lane because he's impossible to trade against" or "Vladimir auto wins bot lane because he can one shot ADC's". Vladimir mid has always been his healthiest role, because mid laners can actually punish his early game. Please figure out a way.

Jax was probably playing the lane wrong.

Vlad pool has a 28 second CD at rank 1.

Jax leap strike has a 10 second CD at rank 1.

All Jax has to do is leap strike at Vlad WITHOUT counter striking and force Vlad to pool away or lose the trade heavily. Then the moment Jax's leap strike comes of CD he leap strikes with his counter strike and Vlad will either have to flash or die.

Rinse & repeat.

However if Vlad freezes the wave in front of his tower, Jax starts to have a bad time.

Maybe I never played against a good Jax, but I've always found that at early levels, a Jax who does as you describe will take too much minion aggro and at best will come out only slightly ahead on the trade if Vlad doesn't pool, which essentially means Vlad won the trade since he can heal.

You have to play safe early on but after sheen it becomes easy for jax if they are even. Vlad still can win later on tho

Vlad is an immobile mage. His unusual safety and strenght is being pushed up by 2 factors:

  1. Top lane is a fiesta.
  2. Two of the items he rushes are the strongest and most impactful among the mage items (that also happen to have CDR and one of them, is kinda cheap, fom my humble brusier point of view). That also happen to cover the weaknesses that he have.

What approach could be done?

Before dropping the nerf comment on his existence, i will elaborate other observations:

• Other users already stated that he is not as much penalized top, but he is certainly penalized mid. So, following this straw, i can say that he can be counterpicked with midlaners. The bad side, its that we are not on midlane. We are on an island. Things work different here. • There is less 'Danger' sides that a jungler can use to gank. In mid, Vlad has more rules to respect. That doesn't happen on Top. Also, There is the roam variable on mid (which is part of the previous mentioned rules that Vlad mid respects) roams from top laners to mid happen, roams from bot laners to mid happen. And Vlad, as an immobile mage, the less variables or rules he needs to respect, the better. • As a toplaner, i can say that there are more player niche diversity here than any other lane, also, i can state that the more i look at Vlad, the more evident is to me that he does't exactly follow a niche top. And that's is what makes him powerful. He is certainly not penalized as much as the other top lane picks. I can accurately accommodate him as a "Jack of all trades".

Treat him as a kennen or Jayce if he is meant to stay top lane. Hope this have been useful info.

Phaserush I can agree but there's not much else worth picking for him; the cdr problem isn't just a problem with him though should be nerfed across the board. However how does nerfing his armor encourage him to go middle lane, where talon, yasou & zed reign supreme?

Nerf the healing on his Q on minions or in the early game would fix a lot of the issues . Like noone has issues with kayle because you bully her early game , if vlad has the same playstyle i think it should be fine

Reduce his q healing vs minions, reduce his e rank 5 cd, reduce his e base damage and for that, increase the health he gains from his passive. Here you go, forced out of toplane and brought back to mid where he heals more damage than he tanks from mages early game

But if you reduce his Q healing vs minions, wouldn't it incentivise him to lane vs melee champs, where he can Q them more often and avoid the penalty, or am I missing something?

FSRER1 votes

He will have to poke with q melee champions and that is the point. If a melee manages to trade with, vladimir won't be able to freeze the wave under his tower and heal it all back like he does right now. That would make him less powerful vs melees in the end

Vlad main here with a totally unbiased opinion coming your way.

Even before the rune update, Vlad used prioritise CDR with item 3157 item 3152 item 3158 and scaling CDR blues, and since he wasn't as BS as he is now, I'm not really inclined to think that was the problem (although the first row of minor runes giving scaling CDR kinda breaks him since he can go item 3020 for more damage).

Phase Rush is much like the old Stormraider's, albeit a bit more difficult to proc now. However, the MS coupled with Nimbus Cloak is too much, and I'd rather see the latter get removed/retuned/reworked again. A Phase Rush MS nerf would also be ok.

You could also bump his E HP cost back to 10% current HP, making him more squishy early.

The thing is that champs with a disgusting all in at level 3, like Jax Riven and maybeIrelia dumpster him if they abuse his W CD early, and control mages like Orianna Anivia and Malzahar can negate his later game impact. Haven't played normals in quite some time, though, so I might be wrong.
