Since riot reverted back to the original ranking system everyone is set at 0lp I assume. Does this mean we get protection from demotion?

Nope. You can't sit in Silver 4, 0LP for eternity until your next win streak. By my count you get 3 losses before you go back. usually it's down to bronze 2 as well so you HAVE to fight back.
