Tell me why Amumu support doesn't work
Only played a few games w/ him as support, but it seems very strong... yet nobody plays him as support, so I'm assuming there's a reason. Convince me it's a bad idea.

He is just a worst version of leona when played in the support role.
pre 6 your only cc is your bandage toss, so if you get ganked you are quite vulnerable
you dont get enough gold from the support position to make either his AP build or his tank build viable
he has two abilities that are going to do nothing from the support position
No disengage and no way to fight through minions except for his ult which has a long cooldown and a small aoe that does minor, minor damage, he's really not an early game dueler. It might seem strong against a few noobs who aren't use to it, but against experienced players you'll get harassed and pushed to the tower the entire time while probably not even ulting the adc unless you burn a flash.
What about Zac?
No heal, no sheild, no peel besides Q, and late game R. no poke in lane, and if you do poke then you have to get ontop of them.
all falls down to having the confidence and competence in your play. as long as your good enough with the champ you should be able to make it work. off meta supports work all the time even in plat-diamond-challenger elo because either the players arent mains in that lane or just havent gone against it before so have no idea what to do or what it can do.
Really miss the proxy amumu days, just spam E inside waves well the enemy laner farms under tower :D I think amumu support is overshadowed by kennen support, since he has better poke, but amumu can capitalize on the allie jungler ganking much more

It's not that it doesn't work, it's more that Amumu is about a ~C at supporting.
He's passable as a support and does bring a lot of the utility needed for the roll, his %HP shred gives him solid bases/scaling into late without items, and his lanning phase can add some pressure. You can certainly win with support mummy without being dead weight for your team and actually contributing to the win, and there are plenty of champions worse at the support roll than Amumu.
But there are plenty of champions that are much better at doing the things support Amumu can offer, and plenty of champions that do those things just as well while also bringing a lot more power in the supportive roll.
Leona, Braum, Taric, Nautilus, Alistar, Kench, Maokai, and Thresh are all largely better at doing everything support Amumu can, resulting in situations where all 6 bans and being out-picked still don't justify picking Amumu support for any mildly competitive game.
