Attack speed. Attack damage. Life steal.

You have to know when to go in. Mistiming an engage is more deadly with Aatrox than with most top laners, but if done well Aatrox can become a terror for enemies. My advice is to try and pay passively in lane, race for six, and try to set up your first kill with your jungler since his CC is admittedly rather weak on it's own unless you have a significant level/item advantage and can delete people incredibly fast.

I actually put some time into learning him over the last season and while I found him incredibly fun, he requires a lot of team set up to do well. Your jungler should be a solid tank, or at least be building as one, to soak up for you, and you should NEVER be the first one into a fight.

Try and time your E and Q to hit someone at the same time if you're going for burst, but if you're trying to stay on someone then Q in and wait until after they've reflexively burnt a flash or a dash to fire your E at them for the slow.

And just as a fun tip, remember to pop your ult if you're pushing a turret and there are no enemies or an impending team fight. His ult absolutely eats turrets lol.

Step 1: Don't play Aatrox.

I also bought Aatrox after seeing someone do great with him and ended up just dying a lot b/c I was trying to build dmg items first. I stopped playing him for a long time, then picked him up again and started building him tanky with 21/9/0 masteries. I usually build randuins first and then visage next, then once I get boots then I go for botrk. Once I started doing that I had much more success with him.

Also, just as a fun build, I went full defense with HP regen and armor/MR runes. He doesn't put out much dmg, but due to his sustain I held top lane strong. And that frustrates a lot of riven players. And frustrating Riven players is something I enjoy doing.

Aatrox is a tricky bastard to master. First things first is that you take AD marks and quints, not AS. Flat AD improves the potency of his self-healing, and his Blood Well provides him with AS already. Lifesteal quints aren't a good idea either, as they just don't work well enough for him to use them.

The second is that you cannot go pure offense with his first two major buys. That's suicide. Rushing BoRK is okay provided you get a Randuin second. Don't even think about going BoRK first, Hydra second, Randuin third. You will never fight for long enough without that defense. Oh, and don't go Berserker Greaves as Aatrox; get Ninja Tabi or Mercury's Treads to ensure you live long enough to actually do damage.

I find he isn't so strong in team fights as he dies so easily, but if a tank he is weak. I usually build something like Hydra, BotRK, Blood Thirster, and GA. I will just split push and focus on objectives and only fight for objectives or if necessary. His sustain is nice in lane and the attack on W is really good for shoving waves. Split push 2 win
