Normal/ Team Builder Nearly every game feels like a blatant miss match
I like this game and I like really challenging even match ups. I understand that blind pick makes for a lot of random countering in lanes but I try to play to the best of my ability every match, not the trolling /giving up type of player. I'm Silver 4 in the ranking though I understand normal queue probably doesn't consider this so if anything I'm making this to point out that perhaps it should.
I had a winning streak a couple months ago, winning nearly every game(which I thought was odd) but now (past 2 months just about) I simply cannot win. Any seldom win on my match history is because the other team player dc, or if riot matchmaking allows it. I'll explain what I mean by that below.
The game is simply not fun when you don't have a chance to win. My win rate for the last 20 games is 25% it's frustrating when you try your hardest and lose 6 games in a row.
I started looking at lolnexus to check out the players in each game. Nearly all games have multiple platinum and diamond players on the opponent's team, while mine consist of silver/gold/unranked. About 2/10 games will my team have higher total elo, and every single game the gap in elo from team to team is HUGE. Most games last 20-30min and pretty much every game has a kill gap of 15+ kills and 11k+ gold advantage on one side.
This is a real game match up. This match ended at 19:06 with 30/15 kills. http://imgur.com/quCYCaK
Having a game with a Diamond 1 player with 2 other platinum vs gold, silver, and a single platinum player is pretty much every game for me. This is fair? I'm asking you riot you see this as a fair match? When obviously my team loses every single time.
Is anyone noticing an issue like this? The game is simply not fun when I know if I play my best champ and try my hardest I still at most have a 25% chance to win.
Best guess on player pool for each queue I'm going to roughly underestimate each step, so the final number should be way higher than my estimation. Polygon claims lol has 27million daily active players. lets say 25% are on NA server 6.75million Lets say 20% of those players play around the time you do for 2 hours 2-3 games(peak time probably) 1.35million Lets say half that is playing normals the most popular game mode 675k Lets say the queue time is 1 minute so 2 hours divided into 120 queues 5625 players per queue sorted into matches every minute. Lets say riot matches you with players roughly within 10% skill level up or down based on whatever it is they base this one
That leaves 1152 players riot has to choose from to match with and against you during peak hours on the NA server. Using criteria like players queuing together, position experience, champ experience and ranked elo and specific game type elo I feel as though 1k+ players could be sorted into fair and challenging games.
Feeling this is in Riots best interest to address Maybe players won't get frustrated and stop playing for many weeks if they were reliably sorted into challenging matches, maybe players would feel comfortable purchasing items for a game more if they weren't frustrated. lol I don't know.
Thanks for reading though this. Please take it with a grain of salt(pun intended) and not too seriously. I enjoyed dissecting this topic and writing about it. Don't enjoy losing nearly every match though. [zombie-nunu-bummed]
This effects everyone I play with Edit: I also want to add that this effects my friends I play with. I have a steady small pool of friends I play with a few times a week for a few matches. We used to win 50/50 maybe a little more. Now a days it's the same deal, we can't win. If we do and it's rare it's by overwhelming luck, due to champ countering or opponent dc which we can take advantage of. This past season my buds are gold and silver, and we are still matched against platinum and diamond.
We play less and less lately and I'm starting to wonder if my buddies are becoming hesitant to play with me given the pattern of losses the past month. It's not like I just started sucking out of nowhere. I've been putting in all my effort if not more to try and compensate(as in not trying out new champs when playing with them, playing my best champs and making sure we have a good comp)
The result is the same for every 10 matches Get stomped x 8, stomp them x 1, fair challenging(fun) match x1
Theory on the cause edit: Adding a revelation from the comments. Given the feedback from this topic(thanks everyone) right now I think the cause boils down to it being off season so many people are playing normal that would normally be focusing on ranked those who play ranked a lot tend to be higher rank. Combined with Riot using separate means of measurement for ranked queue and normal queue.
So most likely the high ranking players who only play normal's around this time of year have their stats around the average until it levels out after many games played, and if I had to guess our stats would be about average/slightly above so we get matched with them often.
Since the high ranked players only play normal's for a very short amount of time per year the stats never have time to level off where they should be. This is a flaw of using the elo system, not only multiplayer interchanging teams(which is was not designed for at all) but that elo takes a long time and a lot of games to find a players actual skill level.
Typically they update the ranking system around the start of the new season, but I'd imagine they don't focus on the way normal queue matchmaking works(if anyone knows of normal queue matchmaking updates besides team builder please let me know) So it's probably a few years over due for an overhaul.
As software developer and data analyst with 6+ years exp I can tell you if you write an algorithm and let it manipulate data for long periods of time, the flaws of your algorithm will show with greater and greater effect as time goes on, you have to adjust and re calibrate as you learn from your data.
So hopefully the matchmaking guys at riot will see this post as a sticky note reminder of an on going issue.
