Adding variety (the spice of life) to the Rotating Game Mode queue
Let me put this out here first. I like the idea of the rotating game mode and find it an improvement over how these game modes were originally offered. In my eyes, the purpose of the Rotating Game Mode queue is to prevent any one game mode from become stale and offer wider variety. At first, this method worked, but (again, in my opinion) is beginning to fail. We have seen the same few game modes repeated, while some have been more or less ignored. I don't claim to know the relative popularity of the game modes or by which algorithm they are selected from week to week, but I do think I have a few suggestions that could break up the increasingly monotonous rhythm of poro king - one-for-all - hexakill - nexus siege. I appreciate Riot creating new game modes to add to the queue, but I believe that the variety of the queue could be vastly increased without much added effort. As a disclaimer, I don't claim to know that this is easy for sure, but its probably more efficient than inventing a whole new game mode.
Here is the last bit of background before we get to my suggestion: All league matches vary in four main ways: pick type, map, game type, and modifiers. Below, I list everything I could think of for these four categories, but there are most likely some more that have slipped my memory.
Pick type: –Blind Pick –Blind Draft –Draft Pick –All Random –Nemesis Draft –Lottery Pick (one-for-all) –Mirror Mode
Map: –Summoner's Rift –Twisted Treeline –Crystal Scar –Howling Abyss (or Butchers Bridge? - the pirate one) –That showdown volcano map we saw at Worlds that one time (rito plz)
Game Type: –Normal –Ascension –Nexus seige –Dominion –Definitely Not Dominion
Modifiers: –None –URF –Poro King –Hexakill –Doom bots (where did you go?) –Blackmarket Brawlers
So my suggestion is as follows; mix and match these variables to create a wider variety of game modes on the Rotating Game Mode queue without actually inventing new games. Some of these variables wouldn't easily mesh together or be balanced, but in my opinion, many of the possible outcomes would be good to go without major alterations. Many may never see the light of day, but they could be worth considering.
To sate my own curiosity and because I lack creativity, I created an excel file that randomly combines one of each variable into a potential new rotating game mode. Below, are my first few unfiltered creations.
- All Random, Normal, URF, on Twisted Treeline
- Lottery Pick, Dominion, URF, on Howling Abyss (oh god why)
- Nemesis Draft, Dominion, Blackmarket Brawlers, on Summoner's Rift
- All Random, Dominion, Doom Bots, on Howling Abyss
- Mirror Mode, Ascension, no modifiers, on Twisted Treeline
- Nemesis Draft, Normal, Hexakill, on Howling Abyss
- Mirror Mode, Definitely Not Dominion, Blackmarket Brawlers, on Crystal Scar
- Mirror Mode, Nexus Siege, URF, on Crystal Scar (not sure this one would work)
- Draft Pick, Normal, Hexakill, on Twisted Treeline (essentially what we already have)
- All Random, Dominion, Poro King, on Summoner's Rift
These ten random examples assume one of each variable, whereas multiple modifiers could easily be combined, and in some cases multiple pick types. With that in mind, here are some less randomly generated game modes that I would enjoy playing in the future:
- Nemesis Draft, Normal, Hexakill, URF, on Twisted Treeline
- Nemesis Draft, Mirror Mode, Ascension, on Crystal Scar
- Lottery Pick, Normal, URF, on Summoner's Rift
- Blind Draft, Normal, Poro King, on Summoner's Rift (King spawns where ever the final snowball was landed and goes to the nearest lane)
- Blind Draft, Normal, URF, Blackmarket Brawlers, on Summoner's Rift
- Blind Pick, Normal, URF, Doom bots (for extra insanity and lag)
There are further alterations beyond the four main variables that could be considered on a case by case basis and adjusted when deemed necessary such as number of players, number of bans, and number of rerolls (if aram). For instance, in URF (or plain draft) games even now, perhaps each player should be allowed a ban for a total of 10.
I will admit that this idea of mine is not completely unique, as hexakill is now on Twisted Treeline whereas it started on Summoner's Rift and next week URF will be all random pick. I am simply suggesting taking it to the next level.
In conclusion: share your combinations in the comments and rito plz.
Crab out.
