Death Recap update is overdue.

Priestelar··84 votes·17,931 views

The deathrecap screen has a few inconcistancies and it looks like it contributes to how people misunderstand what happens when they die.

For example: Took 2000 damage from Yasuo's Q Person reacts to this: wtf yasuo does 2k damage with 1 q Me: no you dingus, it takes into concideration the total damage from several q's!

The interface looks old too, It doesn't display how many times 1 ability was used and basic attacks are not considered as magic damage or true damage only pure physical damage without any crits.

And there are lots of cases where certain things are left blank like: [ ] took 44 damage from [Player name] BUT LIKE WHAT DID THIS DAMAGE.

Thoughts and suggestions please! We need to work together with this not against one another.

Death recap bugs I’ve had so far

  • Vayne isn’t even in my game, how did silver bolts help her get an assist on me?
  • Ah yes, I was killed by (insert Icon XX), I’m thinking “insert Icon XX” needs to be nerfed Riot.
  • No riot, Gnar’s auto attacks deal physical damage and the THIRD hit does magic, not all doing mixed.
  • How did dragon get an assist on me from topside?
  • New: Aparently, Viktor can now use Jhins curtain call to get an assist on me.

The game wasn't coded by professionals, it was made by a bunch of modders. There's been bugs caused by completely unrelated changes that should have 0 impact on anything else. There's a reason people meme about spaghetti code, cause basically everything is intertwined in a mess. Just something simple as moving the X button on the death recap by some pixels could make Azir able to spawn infinite amount of towers everywhere again because something in the code relies on the X button being exactly where it was.

If it only took some high schoolers a month to do they would've fixed it ages ago. So either it costs way more money than it's worth or it's more complicated than you think.

Or changing ghost poro could make shyvana passive scale infinitely off of poros.

Since when does Flash kill?

Come to think of it, thanks to the recent Hawkshot buff to Ashe I got kill credit on a Lee Sin I revealed - and who got subsequently killed by our mid turrets with nothing else doing damage to him. I'm very curious to know if Hawkshot actually appeared in his Death Recap xD

Doge20201 votes

I don’t think so because the death recap would only show damage that helped killed you. And Hawkshot doesn’t deal damage to people it reveals.

Well, my janna's zephyr isn't supposed to hurt me, she's on my team after all, but I guess I might've made her angry because in one of my death recaps, I saw zephyr did 200 damage to me. So if that can do damage to me, I wouldn't be surprised if hawkshot showed damage dealt.

Doge20201 votes

Well you are comparing apples with oranges. Hawkshot deals no damage at all, but Zephyr deals damage and slows the enemy unit. That’s like saying an enemy ward dealt X amount of damage to you if you died shorty after walking in the vision range of the ward. And we both know that wards don’t deal any damage at all.

On the topic of Hawkshot, it gives the Ashe assist gold if the killed enemy was revealed by Hawkshot before the enemy’s death. So your fed Kha zix is in the enemy jungle and you use your Hawkshot to help kha see if the enemy red is up, your W shows that it is up and that the Enemy jungler (who is low on hp) is trying to take it, Kha then jumps in and kills the Enemy jungler and you get assist gold because your w revealed the Enemy jungler. I think riot made Hawkshot able to grant you assist gold because almost all of the other abilities that reveal enemies have damage or another helpful effect tied in with it (like ignite and Swain’s W).

Thresh OP, he can clone himself and deals TRUE MAGIC DAMAGE.

Hethalean11 votes

They're never going to do it. The foundation of this game is atrocious and you can see it in the bugs that seep out of every crevice of it each patch. I don't think they're willing to put that sort of investment into the game because there's no R.O.I. on it for the accountants imo.

20k expected top player count to 20k lines of code needing to be rewriten : X

Supposedly a dedicated client-fix team was formed in October, so by season 13 we should have a halfway decent client and announcer packs.

Not gonna happen unless they do a major overhaul of the game, they talked about death recap and why they couldnt fix it a while ago.

I think the word is **w**ouldnt, because the game is 9 years old.

Right--IIRC there are some posts from last year explaining how this is "part of the lifecycle of a 'free-to-play' multiplayer game". They don't stick around forever, and some fixes just aren't worth it to the people who own the game (Riot/TenCent).

It makes sense, but obviously it's not a good thing.

FireDrizzle2 votes

If they cant be bothered too give the game an actaul death recap, why would actaully do a big overhaul like preseason 2017 or make the new client? They could make much less effort working on the game than that and its more work than a death recap i should think. When the game blew up it must have been obvious the game was going too take a long time too die.

You may say they spice up the game, but I believe they would have maintained more players if they didnt work on it much. The jungle changes have mostly been bad since i started playing, and after they deleted runes and reworked masteries they just added a dumbed down version of runes back in after all that.

It doesnt make sense too me mate, I just feel confused if i think this.

The question to always keep in mind is: how much did <insert thing> cost them to do? Riot plays safe, relatively speaking. They definitely sacrifice some amount of customer satisfaction in order to keep their e-sports side as happy as possible (because historically, that's been easy money for them--but this may be changing).

You may say they spice up the game,

I'm not saying that--I honestly don't know if I even have an opinion on whether they've done that.

but I believe they would have maintained more players if they didnt work on it much.

Maybe, yeah. It's hard to say.

Confusion is a powerful tool.

couldn't just means its worth less than the work to make it work.

I really wish they would just add time stamps like other games where you can see exactly what happened, who did what, etc. Time stamps are also very valuable when trying to figure out if you actually did a cancel animation correctly on champs like Riven's fast Q.

LeftyRaydy2 votes

I had a sion in my death reacap who assisted himself with 200 true damage somehow. Its incredible and so interesting when you open the death recap. sometimes it doesnt add up to your max health and other times it shows more damage than your max health. its so..... great

Yeah it's pretty useless.

I think it's actually impossible for RIOT to update the Death Recap. From what I remember hearing earlier, it's because that the recap is embedded in some core part of the game that makes changes nearly impossible because of what I can only assume is spaghetti code. If they change something in it, it's liable to break hundreds of other things and cause some serious bugs in things you'd never reasonably expect, so they just decided to leave it as is.

Then perhaps they should re-do the core code...with far more resources at their disposal it should be easier and arguably might help make the game run smoother.

Axzarious1 votes

You'd probably be right about that. Though that could take a few months and they'd probably have to cease updating.

Serika Zero1 votes

That's a load of bullshit. all death recap is a set of calculations that are being displayed to you.

It would take less than a week for a programmer to comment all the code that is responsible for posting death recap messages on the client. potentially less than a day if their code follojust some basic rules of code blocks.

The only difficult part is how to calculate the new death recap. But even that should take less than 2 months to a team of 5 it class high school graduates.

The reason they don't do it is because they don't want to do (or pay someone to do it).

It's a basic input - output deal. and it's very easy when coding to just ignore most inputs. And just don't generate an output based on it. But generate it based of another set of inputs

Yes, or maybe I have to much expectations from programmers working in USA?

I'm not saying "they should delete the x button", nor am I saying they should "disable the x button".

I'm saying they should simple delete or comment the code that DISPLAYS STUFF. That's why sure it will cause some conflicts when xxxx will try to let's say make focus on a hidden item, but that part again is very easy to comment or remove because brining in focus doesn't do much anyway

So yes, it's a task that even high school programmers that know deleting printf("message") ; will stop the message from being displayed.

You don't care about anything else. You don't modify functions or variables or algorithms. You just mess with the display slightly.

There's a reason modders can make custom skins and still work with the game without causing 9999 bugs. same thing here. All riot has to change is us not seeing the current death recap button. THAT'S ALL. And then implement a new algorithm to calculate that which is the only time consuming part.

Dethflash1 votes

Yes death recap needs a rework / improvements. I personally would love it if the death recap clearly told me what the final ability or whatever killed me like: Killing blow Corki Q. The game has had so many changes the past few years that it baffles me that the death recap hasnt had ANY noticeable improvements. Not to mention i personally think that being able to clearly see what killed you, from who, how much damage it did would, can help players improve slightly at the game. Like in your example, yasuo clearly didnt do 2000 damage from a single Q, but if the death recap showed Yasuo Q 4 times for a total of 2000 damage, people could understand how much damage a single yasuo Q does, and hey if you have 1000 hp maybe you should heal first before trying to fight yasuo again because you clearly now know he does around 500 damage a Q. All in all, i think death recaps is something riot should work on improving, like i said the game has changed a lot the past few years, but death recaps remain largely the same, and i cant forget about all the bugs death recaps have. Like not showing what abilities the enemies hit you with you just see damage numbers and no champion name either, or sometimes it even says my teammates hurt me, yeah Riot my Vi jungle on my team totally did 300 damage to me because that makes sense. Death recaps NEED bug fixes and improvements

I was killed by an enemy ornn once, it siad that "feelingOrnny" assisted him with near 400 true damage. Not sure if the game was saying I inted or whatever.

the entire thing is a fucking bug. just like mordekaiser. and i doubt riot will fix it this or next season, they just love to ignore such things.

i think not a single time i was able to open it and see what actually happened without some random bullshit like "kassadins passive did 121 true damage to you" even tho his passive doesnt deal any damage EVER
