Riot server's suck

WildJester··6 votes·4,009 views

I play on the north america servers. And live in east coast. My ping is around 100 but sometimes it spikes. i ran a steady ping test to a google California server to see if it was on my side or server side. and i had a complete steady ping which means it isnt my side. Does anyone know if there planning to upgrade there servers (riot). because they are awful. league servers are so crowded and there small servers cant handle the constant flooding of players.

It's not the servers. Riot servers have never been better than they are today. So many players complain about lag and bad servers in games where I have absolutely perfect quality of service.

It's about the internet connection to said servers. Just takes one machine along your 20 hops to get overloaded and your experience turns to crap. Not an easy problem to solve, especially in this era of over the top video causing peering wars.

So is there a solution to the problem...?

SmokingPuffin1 votes

Well, yes, but you're not going to like it. You'll get fantastic service if you move to Portland.

In terms of playing on the east coast and getting reliably good quality of service to California, you're at the mercy of the big ISPs. They don't care about gamers as much as they care about Netflix, so good luck getting them to fix your issue.

Practically speaking, there are a few things you can try to mitigate the problem.

  1. Play at off-peak TV watching hours. By far the easiest way to convince the internet to behave for you.
  2. Make sure you have a rock solid connection to your ISP. Don't use wifi. Verify that you have 0% packet loss on the first and second hop of your connection to anywhere. If you find that you do, call your ISP and they'll fix it.
  3. If you're experiencing intermittent lag spikes, you can use a vpn service to reroute your packets across another leg of the internet. You can use this map to get a good idea of where the backbone lines run, and you can use tracert to some random server in California to estimate which hop is sometimes dropping your packets.
  4. Note that Latin America, for Riot's purposes, is actually located in Florida. If you live in the south and are reasonably comfortable with Spanish, consider playing there.

They are bad servers though, considering the fact that most of the time when my league ping goes crazy every single other game i play runs at 100 ping or less. I've seen way too many problems with these servers and times that they get overloaded for me to say that they're fine.

Ping is not a server issue. That's a measure of how long it takes stuff to get to the server and back. You probably have reliable ping to other games because their servers are located closer to you than League servers are, resulting in your packets not having to cross as many overcongested peering connections.

Server lag looks noticeably different than interconnect lag. With server lag, you'll see things like projectiles disappearing and reappearing, groups of minions walk right through each other, and mobs not spawning on time. With interconnect lag, you'll see a delay between you inputting commands and your character doing those things, but the minions and towers will still be working fine.

Server lag is almost always accompanied by an announcement on the client. Riot had a lot of trouble in Q1 of last year, but lately their servers are silky smooth. Never been better. I personally haven't seen an instance of server lag in at least 9 months.

Oh i've had server lag, where everything freezes every couple seconds and invisible ezreal q's and ults hit me when i can't see them? yah, thats happened, server lag is real and don't deny it just because you haven't experienced it.

SmokingPuffin1 votes

What you describe doesn't sound like server lag. If everything is freezing, that means your client temporarily lost connection to the server. A projectile that is never visible, but still registers damage, is also an indication that the server is processing things one way, but your client didn't get the memo and thus didn't show you the same picture.

The defining characteristic of server lag is that your client's predictions of where things will be in the future get used for longer than is expected. For example, minions continue to move in a straight line after they should have engaged with enemies. Another thing that can happen is that autoattacks you started end up disappearing midway to the target or not registering any damage when they get there.

The other thing with server lag is that it happens to all of the players on the server, which means that loss prevention will be on. If you see that the game completes and loss prevention is not awarded, it's about 99% certain that server lag was not the problem.

I'm not going to say server lag never ever happens. Certainly it does. However, Riot's servers have never been more stable than they are today, while UDP internet connectivity hasn't been this unreliable since the days of dialup.

Balareon1 votes

Then why the fudge did you mention disappearing projectiles in server lag? You mention it in one poet and then in the next say it's not server lag, you just contradicted yourself. Also, yah they're more stable than last year, but they are still awful servers. Last year they were disgustingly terrible, constant loss prevention and server issues, this year they're bearable but still bad.

SmokingPuffin1 votes

"Disappearing" and "invisible" are two different things. Invisible means you client never got the instruction to make the thing; typically this is simply a dropped packet. A disappearing projectile, like a minion or tower shot, means your client estimated that thing was going to happen, but then the next update it got from the server didn't have it actually happening.

Honestly, servers have been pretty spiffy this year. The vast majority of people who are currently blaming "servers" should be complaining about their connection to the servers.

Well keep telling yourself that, while players switch to Dota2. Because I have a good internet connection with speeds of 10 mbps. Plus i have a gaming rig, and yet i face lag...That means something is wrong with your servers and not my connection. But i had enough with this shit..Too much lag in every fucking game. Time to move on. Time to play dota2.

Did you know you can uninstall anytime? No one is making you play or bring your negativity here.

You ran a ping test? That's amazing - what were the sizes of the packets you sent?

Yo, no need to be mean, he is right. Riot has pretty bad servers that need fixing.

Please, tell this prick off. Attach your extensive internet troubleshooting logs to PROVE it's a RIOT ISSUE. PROOF or SHUT UP!

To make sure I understand: OP can talk shit about Riot's servers = Not a prick. Asking for OP to prove his statement = Prick.

So Millions of people play the game, no issues with connectivity, myself included. OP and two other people on this thread say "Riots server sucks" and provide zero data to back up what they? Sounds pretty uneducated.

WildJester1 votes

It all depends on where you live if you live close to riot servers your prob not going to never have problems but if you live further away from the servers like me your going to most likely have problems. And if your not going to be useful dont comment all your doing is causeing a flood of comments

Also, a hell of a lot of people have problems with the servers, do you even check the boards mate? There are constant posts about server issues.

Absolutely, constant posts about server issues. 99.9% of them say RITO FIX IT, providing zero data. I don't have connectivity issues, none of my friends have connectivity issues, the only AFK's I have had in my last 20 games were a duo that admitted their internet sucked. So a little math there for you - 198 players out of 200 no connection issues in 20 games. So... what are the odds, that I would not have any issues in my games other than two people admitting their net was the bottleneck?

Balareon1 votes

Listen, just because you don't have problems with the servers doesn't mean they don't exist. I know plenty of people, including myself, who lag in this game and only this game. This is the only game i have ever had ping problems with or severe lag issues with. Gladly it's not too common but when it does happen it usually lasts a few days. Also, haven't you noticed there are entire weekends where suddenly the boards are filled with server posts? Riots servers are quite infrequent in their quality, and will sometimes just break down for a weekend causing huge problems for a lot of people.

Wait... I don't have a problem with my connection, you do, but it's a Riot issue. How do you know it's RIOT? Let me guess "No other games have the issue" - well... where are those games servers hosted? Do they take the same network path for connection? Are they Multiplayer games where you have 10 people dynamically connected through multiple network routes into one node?

Blaming Riot is uneducated. Get proof it's a Riot issue, more people will be willing to accept that there is an issue. Covering your ears and howling at the wind saying it's a Riot issue just makes you sound ignorant of how internet gaming works. All I've said this entire thread is people are blaming Riot baseless, get proof, then talk.

I play almost exclusively multiplayer games, on east and west coast servers, and again, only this lags. So yes, they have server issues.

First of all i ran the ping test thou cmd console and second idk how to get a pic of that and third i dont need proof cause this is a know problem thou league of legends players

So you ran a Default PING through CMD which sends a packet of 32 bytes of data which is nothing, 56k modem can send and receive 32 bytes of data with no loss. What results are you getting from Speedtest.net on your up and down speeds? What's your PING showing as to the speedtest servers? Doing 10 consecutive tests and doing a median will actually give you an accurate idea of how well your internet is performing.

Another test would be to send a packet test of larger packets.

WildJester1 votes

Alright ill try some of those also the server that is used with speedtest.net is very close compared to where the riot servers are located

No, being a jerk to someone because they posyted about Riots servers makes you a prick.

I have been playing competitive online games for over 20 years and have always been able to troubleshoot and solve any server issues regarding crashes or disconnects that ruin online game experiences. I am a certified networking and PC technician. I hold an A+, N+, and MCSE, these small titles are just a minimal portion of the proof that I am more than qualified to solve networking gaming issues regarding client and server related problems. I currently have a high end gaming PC that is above and beyond any machine I have ever owned.

I want to say the frequent crashes started around the launch of windows 10 where games would lock up the PC(about 1min 30seconds into game) with the only fix being "signing out of windows and signing back in and re-logging into the league client" versus the old method which was much faster required "opening task manager and forcing the end task of league and logging back in" either way both methods are considerably inconvenient when you are facing an opponent that is considerably more advanced giving him an at least a 1 to 2 minute increased advantage that you or your team can not afford.

I have recently discovered (5-28-19) a hex tech repair tool claiming to fix all league related issues I decided to give this a chance but still have experienced the same issues with random disconnects unlike any other online games I have ever played. These unfortunate game crashes are not related to any other game except riot gaming servers.

In conclusion I am lead to believe that the reason riot can not fix all the problems in the client to server area is that riot has a possible 1 billion total client users trying to utilize their servers with little success leaving 800 million of those possible users giving up and going onto other games while 200 million users remain luckily never experiencing any of these issues.

The reason for this post is I am really hoping Riot will magically fix all these problems I know wishful thinking but only one can dream... I really love this game and have for over 5 years now despite the frequent server complications between network relationships! Riot all the best in your endeavors the mountainous terrain you guys have withstood over the years making this gaming community readily available with limited problems for a huge yet so small portion of the population I only can dream that someday it will be able to reach everyone in the future. Thank you again for all the time invested!
