We need to talk seriously about supports.

We (because all League of Legends players agree with me) know the support role is incredibly overpowered. There's one on every team, and it's been that way since the first season. They're impossible to shut down. They can be down by 4 levels and 4000 gold and it barely even impacts them. They're so important that they have a built-in Mordekaiser ghost that just follows them around and autoattacks things for them.

We know Riot has said they expect supports to ward a lot. But it's just unreasonable how much they ward. If you check an average post-match screen, you'll usually see the support putting down more than twice as many wards as anyone else. It's just not fair. You can kill that Zyra 7 times in lane, and then as soon as she gets one item, suddenly she has the river and your entire jungle warded, not to mention the brush your team was going to ambush her from. It's totally ridiculous that even bottom tier supports place more wards than Lee Sin.

But seriously, what's up with Riot pandering to them? They're in every game, and yet every year Riot keeps making it even easier for them to ward and giving them more gold. And what happens when someone from another class tries to use their items? "No, you can't use Frostqueen's Claim in midlane. Only supports are allowed to buy it." We're surprised they didn't restrict Sightstone to players that got the support role in New Champ Select. (Maybe we shouldn't have said that... Riot might be reading this.)

The worst part is how cocky they are about things. They'll waste Flash to block a teammate from getting hit by a Caitlyn ult, then act like they didn't do anything wrong when you trash talk them in /all chat. You know they have to feel back because they're typing from a gray screen, but getting them to admit it is so hard, and raging at them doesn't help much either. The best you can do is hope your support's in the zone today.

Hopefully Riot realizes how out of line supports are and nerfs them. Their scaling with absolutely nothing is totally unhealthy for the game at a basic level. In Chess, none of the roles have crowd control. They all just move and deal damage. We want LoL to stay unique, and it's pretty cool when Yasuo knocks your team airbone. But it's simply toxic when Braum or Janna can do it.

What Riot should do about it:

  1. Stop only allowing supports to have the good items. Sightstone should build out of BF Sword, Needlessly Large Rod, and Giant's Belt so that other roles can use it too.
  2. Reduce that ridiculous base damage. Look at Taric. He has one ability that deals 240 base damage at level 5. 240. Supports aren't supposed to do damage. It should be reduced to about 60 base damage at level 5, with an additional .2 Bonus AD scaling to compensate (to reward for snowballing).
  3. Nerf those gold generation items. No other class gets 5000 gold just from standing next to minions and doing nothing.

Kindred so they would never be alone, dear wolf? Kindred so they would never be alone, little lamb!
