How Does Armor/MR Work?

I've been trying to find out how runes really work. For instance, I've calculated that health seals and health per/lvl seals are equal at level 6, and post 6 per/lvl heal seals are superior.

I'm confused as to how armor works though. For every armor you have does it block 1 ad? (you have 50 armor, block 50 ad?) And the same for MR? (have 50 mr, block 50 ap?)

Is it that simple or is there a more complicated formula?

Anyone know of a link that talks about this stuff?

Armor reduces physical damage by a %. Magic Resistances does the same with magic damage. The % equals 100/(100 + Resistance Value) The more armor you have, the less it is worth, but every point of resistance increases your effective Health by 1%. So stacking Armor is less gold efficient than stacking the same value in Armor + Health.

It is a multiplicative scaling, not a flat reduction. Armor works against physical damage (not AD, which sometimes affects skills that do magic damage); Magic Resistance works with the same formulas against magic damage (not AP which may affect skills that do physical damage).

Comparing flat armor runes to scaling armor runes still works the same as health ones though. So the scaling armor seals will break even at level 7 as well.

Some quick reference points:

50 Armor = take 2/3 physical damage 100 Armor = take 1/2 physical damage 200 Armor = take 1/3 physical damage

Just like JackYAqua said

To make it simpler, Divide 100 to 100+your resistance value and that is your damage multiplier. If X is your resistance value and Y is your damage multiplier, you have this equation: [100/(100+X)=Y] Multuply that with your raw damage and that is their hp that will go away with your attack. For an example, let's say you have 400 AD and you crit for 250% damage. that's 1000 raw damage. Now, let's say they have 150 armor. your effective damage will be (100/250)1000=> 10000.4=400. To find how much damage reduction you have you simply abstract the damage multiplier (see the equation above) from 1 and the remaining value is your damage reduction against enemy attacks. Note that this all changes depending on their Armor and Magic penetration.

This is probably a bit excessive and too detailed, but basically armor & magic resist have significant diminishing returns, while health, AD, & AP stack without such penalties. Though it's outdated due to the preseason changes, but should give you a more intact idea of how it works. http://boards.pbe.leagueoflegends.com/en/c/champions-gameplay-feedback/49ALyYv4-poll-should-kindreds-passive-deal-missing-health-damage?comment=00010000000000000000
