Why does Graves' Collateral Damage explode even when the skillshot doesn't land?

It explodes when it hits champions, but why does it just explode by itself when it goes to the end of its range? It's a grenade that explodes on impact. If it doesn't hit anything, it shouldn't explode.

TL:DC Just played against a graves and am salty.

Because that's what it does? It explodes at the end of its range.

I think you're asking more thematically. Not in terms of game mechanics (i.e., a skill shot reaching the end of its range) but more in "canon terms" (i.e., But the explosive shell didn't HIT anything!)

In that case:

The shell has a timer; like a grenade, it will automatically explode after a short delay (in Graves' case, VERY short delay, because he likes to gamble like that). But its also temperamental; Graves has kind of shitty equipment - if you saw the New Dawn cinematic, he detonated a shell just be smacking it against a rock. So if it hits a target it explodes as well.

It explodes at the end of its range. It's set to a timer. If it hits a champ it sets it off early. I'm more worried about how Heimer gets wrenches to throw. Why are there so many of then? And why are they so small?

Yea it explodes at max range... i dont think the cursor really shows that though when you look at the skill.
