For a support that relies heavily on his auto attack you'd think he'd at least have a comparable range to the other supports. Am I over thinking this. He has 500 range and most the other ranged supports have 550 with the exception of karma who is at 525. Some supports who are meant to walk into the enemy team like Morgan's have a lower attack range but that is understandable.

Actually 500 ain't that bad. it is longer then thresh morgana and quite a few others.
Like I said most the champs who have shorter range are expected to be in the middle of a fight. Morgana, thresh, Janna even. Even karma with 525 range has her mantra w and e to keep her safe. Bards heal does nothing at an instant and most of his damage comes from his auto attacks. His e isn't for a team fight but as an initiation or possibly escape and his ult is far ranged as well as his q. Just seems to clash with his kit especially since his passive is all about harassing enemies with his auto attacks but to do that you always put yourself at a disadvantage getting in closer than anyone else's range. Since Morgana thresh and Janna all have very long range hard cc.
Inb4 Sona's gets nerfed to 400.
has 450 range and does fine, same with who has slightly more at 475.
