So, What champions ARE fun to play against?

MrBuffington··18 votes·5,420 views

Basically, I'm asking about "well designed" champions, champions that have good interactions in game. I mean, clearly it depends a lot on your match up, but aside from 'having fun' countering your match up (ie. that cathartic release when you 100-0 Teemo or something) or 'not having fun' being countered (ie playing a mana hungry champion vs a resourceless one), what champions do you legitimately enjoy playing against?

EDIT: Holy responses. Sorry if I don't get to you; I do read them all though. Most people seem to be saying, aside from just countering your lane and dumpstering your opponent (which I would argue isn't exactly 'healthy interaction' lol) or just picking into a counter and beating them for a challenge, champions that have skillshots and/or clearer windows of vulnerability (ie. baiting Sivir shield, dodging Lux/Karthus skillshots, etc) are fun

Karthus. It's like playing Dance Dance Revolution.

Karthus. It's like playing Dance Dance Revolution.

Does that mean that playing against Lux is the equivalent of Touhou?

Or the opposite, seeing as you don't want to land on where his circles are. lol

Oh. That explains why I always lose vs Karthus :(

Ezreal Lux are fun :) If you can dodge their shit, you can win. If not, it's your fault...not some bull OP shit like Zed. You can dodge that dude's shit for days and it doesn't matter since he can spam and 100-0 you at any time anyway.

I've had the most fun playing against champs like Annie, Anivia, old Sion, Shyvana, and Malphite/Mundo.

When you face off against a champion that has a nuanced-yet-simple kit, it's a ton of fun to play the game.

The kit interactions on old champions were so well designed.

Teemo

LOL JK

But for real, playing against Sivir can be a lot of fun. There are few things as satisfying as baiting her shield before you throw out your hard cc.

For example. When I play Leona, I make sure to prime my Eclipse before I use Zenith Blade. Then after I jump on her, she will expect me to use my Shield of Daybreak, when really my Eclipse pops her spell shield first! And I get the stun down anyway!

Sivir "Nice try!"

Leona "More like NICE DIE BITCH!"

I love going Old School Mage (the no mobility mana hungry ones, remember those?) vs another Old School Mage. I recently bought Viktor, and like fighting Vel'Koz, Brand, Lux or Malzahar. Feels even most of the time and a battle between two skillshot mages is beautiful.

Blitzcrank Is what i consider a 'Worthy Opponent'. His very presence tends to shake up the fight in lane and you always feel like a boss if you can bully him out of the bushes. Heimerdinger Is another I would add to the list of fun enemies. His turrets turn the lane into a positioning contest and you have to know when to poke him or take out a turret. Sion If you beat him, you have to act quickly to avoid his revenge. If he kills you, you feel like he beat you in a fair fight. Velkoz Nothing is more fun than trying to defeat this guy in lane. Between dodging his wacky skillshots and trying to bait out his abilities, outplaying him is thuroughly satisfying.

I gotta say ... as a Heimer main, I'm really happy someone thinks this. This is actually the first time I've ever had someone (who isn't on my friend list) say that playing against a Heimer is fun. It's usually "What a no-skill champ!" or something.

I find his constant steam of turrets annoying. This isn't to say he's no skill because he has to hit the rockets and grenades. That takes skill. I just hate all the bloody turrets and when I'm playing Zyra, my plants don't seem half as good as his guns do.

nobody is fun to play against, but there are champions that suck to play against, and the rare super fun lane where you and your opponent are so evenly matched that you cant help but have fun

Veigar, if you're not a mage.

His aboslutely insane scaling allows him to 100-0 everyone, and his E can mess up plays and whole teams. However, playing against him and baiting his stun to be able to jump on him(as a tank) and focing him to use everything on you(you itemize for it, of course) is immensely satisfying, especially when i see my mage clean the rest of their team and surviving.

I'll use the next example with a Dark Souls boss battle. Most of them have big, deadly, but predictable movesets. Sion is just like that: if you get caught, you'll most likely die. But if you run around the big guy, dodge his attacks, you'll win. Surviving the bonus round is also fun.

And then there's Riven who's Riot's equivalent of Smaugh and Orstein. So painful. When you finaly beat her, you lost so many times to her you don't even feel good about it. You don't feel good because you had to become a Riven main to beat a Riven main. It's just...empty inside. That is when you realise you've become not someone, but something. A creature, allergic to enjoyement, a monster only willing to win. You see no pleasure in the game anymore: you only want to become stronger and stronger. Why? God only knows. But one thing is for sure, the abomination you've become will hurt others. And the last thing they will see are your crimson eyes and your empty smile, your fake satisfaction, your foolish belief that you are better than them. And the last words they will hear are:

"Outplayed."

VardenSalad3 votes

That's why you take Solaire with you to draw aggro, and spam pyromancies at Smough, then Orstein.

Or get mid to roam top.

It depends on who I am playing. I enjoy "hard" lanes where both sides can counter miss plays super hard, because it keeps me focused on the game and makes me not just screw around.

A high stress bot lane with lots of layers of interaction can be great. Graves/Morgana vs Corki/Blitz is a good example. Graves and Corki both have a ton of burst, both have short ranged autos, both have dashes that they can use to avoid the CC of the supports so they are constantly brawling. Morgana binding can be used aggressively, or defensively to keep Blitz away. Blitz hook is a lane defining threat that connecting with instantly turns the entire lane. Yet, Morgana can Black Shield the hook if she is fast enough, so she hard counters it if she is ready for it and sees it coming, adding another layer of counterplay. But, Blitz is also tanky and has a huge speed boost, so if he can dodge the Morg binding he can just run her down because she has no escape. Both supports have tools that are very strong against each other, and both ADCs are brutes early game that will punish any misplay HARD. As long as no side snowballs too hard, the lane stays really fun for the entire lane phase and beyond.

Something slower paced can also be fun, like a Poppy vs Nasus top lane. Both are a little lackluster in the lane phase, both scale into raid bosses. Nasus scales faster and harder if he gets free farm, so Poppy NEEDS to pressure him. This means the Poppy needs to play aggressive, trying to force the Nasus to fight her (And it means she needs great ward coverage) or kill him. It also means the Nasus needs to find a way to get his Q farm without setting Poppy up for too much damage. Both players have a job to do, and since Poppy's job is to force interaction with Nasus (And %max HP damage hurts Nasus bad), neither gets to just sit there and play a tank vs tank noodle fight. Since both scale so well, they both need to keep their map awareness up as well because they are big targets.

For each of the main roles: Mage: Viktor has a lot of moments where he is vulnerable, and his main poke ability is pretty easy to dodge once you get used to its speed.

Adc: Ashe/ Sivir Both have different periods of strength and weakness, that can be exploited by their team and you.

Tank: Chogath has strong cc but long cooldown. Beating him comes down to usually how well I have kept track of which of his abilities are off cooldown.

Support: Braum Yes he can stun you but most supports can too, and they do it instantly. It always feels like I could have bested him if I just played it out differently.

Bruiser: Garen and Sion. If I die to them it feels like I made a mistake that lost me the battle, not just that I got out-kitted.

Assassin: Kassadin is all about figuring out where he will jump next.

When it comes to top lane, I get kind of excited whenever I see a DrMundo or an Olaf. Dodging cleavers and axes is constantly engaging.

A bit more of an oddball response, but I actually kind of like laning against Lissandra. She's a slippery wench, but baiting out her abilities and finally slaying her makes vi(k)tory all the sweeter.

disregardable4 votes

All assuming not fed:

I think Caitlyn's kit is really fun to play against. She has a lot to really screw you over with, but it won't 100-0 you (unless you screw up horribly) the way many champions can. It's fun trying to dance around her traps and try to outthink her.

I think Shaco is also fun to play against for that reason.

Outplaying that Blitzcrank /Thresh hook is also really fun, although (usually) not as fun when you DO manage to get hooked.

Garen Oh, he drives me insane sometimes. How does he always get out alive? Chasing and trying to kill him actually gets comical.

Swain He's a total badass monster. Similarly to Garen, he is often impossible to kill, and I think he really changes up teamfights. He is so interesting and often intimidating to look at that I actually enjoy having him in the game.

KING OF MASKS2 votes

Hah, I main both Garen and Swain for the exact reasons you describe. I can't remember the last Garen game I played that didn't have at least a few laughs.

I actually enjoyed going against old silence talon

I always knew he hurt, but he was so straight forward you can plan to counter the silence before it hits you.

I really enjoy playing against zed for the most part, I just hate how easy it for hims to cs / escape if your beating him in lane / you beat him when he ults you.

In general playing even mage match-ups are really fun,. I.e. not syndra but match-ups between Vik, brand, lux, etc... can be great

The only person I find it miserable to lane against is Nasus, even if you crush him you need to babysit him throughout the entire game I feel locked against him. Or he's just gunna get huge and push to nexus.

Michael C1374 votes

I had a ton of fun going top as Vlad against a Kennen. We were both pretty evenly matched and due to the nature of our kits/ultimate's, we repeatedly would kill each other when an all in duel went on. I think we were both 5-5 at about 25 minutes. It was just a normal game so we were both probably making mistakes that swung the duel back one way or another, but it was really fun to butt heads like that and have no clear winner.

SpecterVonBaren4 votes

Going against the same champ you're using in a solo lane. Every time I've seen a Nasus lane against a Nasus for instance, the two have had the most fun I've ever seen anyone have in this game. Then there was the time me and another GP were up against each other, we basically made pirate puns, spammed laugh at each other, and warned each other of ganks all game, it was tons of fun.

I once did a Vel'Koz vs Vel'Koz game. At level 6, we made a truce to use our ults to make a giant X in mid-lane. We goofed off all game, and even the other people on our teams joined in at some points.

Everyone except the enemy Fiora that is... She seemed to hate fun, and raged at her team's Vel'Koz and at me for being an 'enabler' to a troll. My response was "IF ENABLING FUN IS WRONG, I DON'T WANT TO BE RIGHT!" I don't know what her problem was. It was a blind-pick normal. There was very little pressure, and eveyone else was having a good time. The only actual 'trolling' came from mid-lane, and both of us were doing pretty much the same thing, so no one was really winning the lane hard enough to make a difference later in the game. After a while, everyone just ignored her, and we went on with our shenanigans.

I honestly don't remember who won that game, but it was still some of the most fun I've ever had in a solo-queue game. :D

I had a Singed versus Singed top before, think it was like 2 years ago. We ended up making a truce to just farm for the first 20 minutes or so. Still mad at my team for ganking him to this very day. Overall fighting Singed just in general is pretty fun. Instead of dodging skillshots every 5 seconds I gotta keep the optimal distance away from Singed, walk around every single Q particle, and fights are typically long and drawn out and usually end in me walking out with 50hp and Singed doing the same. And my only ranged top is Rumble, who I really only play in serious games/ranked so I usually don't have the luxury of poking him out of lane.

MrBuffington2 votes

You should have drawn cool synchronized designs with your poison trails

Any tips for playing Singed? I keep wanting to add him to my champion pool but I have no idea how he works; how should you be playing the lane (passive, aggressive, etc), what match ups are good/okay and which ones I should avoid picking him into, when if ever I should be proxy farming, etc

Mirage Seraph3 votes

Sure, I can throw a few tips. Mind I'm no plat player or Singed main.

Firstly, I feel Singed is pretty dependent on high early game MS, so get some MS quints and masteries. You wanna get those flings off. Others prefer AP or more tank, but I dunno, I feel MS is just better.

Because Singed has no real poke, whether you play aggressive or passive really depends on match up. More or less, unless the enemy has never fought a Singed before, you pretty much should expect to go 0 kills in lane. When you play aggressive it's to get them out of lane so you can cs in peace. I don't really recommend the proxy farm thing a lot of players do unless you're super confident you can get out alive, so ward up and keep an eye on the other lanes. Ever since his Ult had its Tenacity removed proxy farming has been way too risky for my tastes.

Match Ups are pretty straight forward. Do they have on demand shields? No kills for you. Do they have DOTs, such as Cass? Play super passive, they have more kill potential than you. Typically I like fighting tanky people, Shyvana, Renekton, Garen, etc. I wouldn't say the lanes are auto-won but you can pretty much ignore them for 2 or 3 waves of cs, go B, and race the minions back to lane if teleport is down. If they're ranged, well, it's gonna be a tough lane but all you gotta do is farm. Ask for ganks and just go even in lane. Always ward. You don't want to be farming at turret because you'll miss a lot of creeps, and Singed can't really freeze the lane so you'll be over extending often.

If you really want to get some kills, try to sneak a few poisons on them by quick-toggling your Q while csing, then all in once they're health is lowered to ~70%. They can't out run a Singed, Ghost, fling into poison, run circles around them and spam laugh (don't forget to AA!), slow them after the fling, fling again if they're not dead yet. Bring ignite if you want kill potential, bring Teleport for late game hyper-tanking. But you NEED Ghost. Don't care what Mobafire says.

Build wise, few things you can do but the tried and true build for me is: Rush Rod of Ages, next item should either be Frozen Heart or Spirit Visage (your ult is super boosted by it!), then get Liandries and you're done with damage, buy the other item (FH or SV), then just go full tank/HP. Randuins, Banshee's, Rylai's is nice, Warmogs probably works well though I hardly bother. Boots are match up dependant, but I like Swiftness for the slow reduction. But if they have 50 stuns it's obvious which boots you should go for.

Sorry for the wall of text, heh.

Baron of Bread3 votes

The question for proxy farming is not "when if ever" but "should I ever stop?" Seriously though:

Basically Singed can run pretty aggressive against a lot of the older champs, but generally struggles against most of the newer ones (actual mileage may vary). Your goal in lane is to have the enemy walk through your poison trail as much as possible, which will have you end up on their side of the minions and likely pushing the lane. Once you get the wave to their turret you should probably start proxy farming if you know where the enemies are. As you proxy you should keep the enemy jungle warded so you know when their jungler is coming to stop you, at which point you ult and run away. Ulting and running away is your strongest fighting technique and should be used as often as possible (not necessarily true, but it is what makes Singed really fun). After lane phase you either turn into a split push machine or begin to chase their ADC to the nexus (or if you are having lots of fun, getting them to chase you through their base).

Sincarnation3 votes

I personally enjoy matchups vs assassin champs like Fizz, Zed, Yasuo, and Riven. Feels good to outplay them in lane or straight up counterpick them

MrBuffington2 votes

I don't think counterpicks really count as having healthy interaction. I mean, I love having targeted hard CC vs mobile champions as much as the next guy, but I don't know if I'd call that a healthy interaction.

JevelFaithful2 votes

Considering he mentionned all the champions that are almost traditionnally QQ'ed about. I don't think it's serious. No comment about the champions, just the fact the only ones he mentions are the forum's official clay pigeon.

MrBuffington3 votes

haha, they're missing a few in that case (ie. Lee Sin, Nidalee, LeBlanc, Akali, etc)

JevelFaithful3 votes

Only clear one that pops to mind is... Most mirror match up. Where you know your power, you know your opponent's power and you can just trade blow for blow untill 1 player wins. My best memories are actually Ori and Lux mirrors.

Otherwise, I find talon surprisingly fun to play against. He WILL destroy you if you give him the chance, but he has to work for it (being melee and all).

Kitten of Evil3 votes

Immobile squishies! Also, champions who have skillshots that don't completely screw you if you get hit by one (so Lux, Ezreal or Zyra for example). Sure, a 1.5 second snare hurts, but it doesn't screw you completely like a Blitzcrank or Morgana.

players that know their champions very well. Cant get better unless you play against better

Anonagon3 votes

Renekton

I used to hate him with a passion, but with the heal change his lane isn't as one-sided and I feel like its an actual skill matchup.

Nameless Voice3 votes

Generally speaking, champions who have a simple, understandable kit which leaves them windows of vulnerability that you can exploit as well as moments of strength when they can exploit you.

Also, champions without massive free waveclear - absolute farm lanes are boring to me. I like the interplay of harassment, especially in mid lane.

Champions like Ahri (pre-rework), Blitzcrank , Lux, Amumu, because they have big-impact skills with significant cooldowns, leaving them open for counterplay if you can avoid their skills. Contrast with for example Ziggs in S4, who basically got to spam his skillshot constantly with little risk.

Annie While her flashtibbers can be frustrating to play against, all of her kit can be played around. Her Q allows her to farm easily, but at the cost of using up her passive, giving her clear moments of power and moments of weakness. She can hold her spells to keep the stun up, but that leaves her with very poor waveclear. Again, moments of strength and weakness that can be played around to get an advantage against her.

Braum He is really focused in his role as protector, which he excels at, but at the cost of having few tools for aggression and engagement.

Ashe Caitlyn Corki Draven Ezreal Jinx KogMaw MissFortune Quinn Sivir Twitch Varus I don't really play ADC very often, as I'm not very good at it, but I feel that most of these guys are quite well balanced, with good strengths and weaknesses.

While skimming through the list of champions, I also noticed that most of the champions I hate playing against because of their kit design fall into the "Assassin" and "Fighter" categories. On the other hand, while there are mages I hate playing against, they are usually more for balance reasons than because their entire kit is not fun (for example, I hate playing against Orianna because of her huge zone control with decent damage, but it's more because it feels like she does way too much damage on low cooldowns for the amount of utility that she has, rather than that her overall kit feels unfair.)

mvargus2 votes

I can't say I've ever had an opponent champ that I saw as "fun". The game can be fun, but the champ usually is not a big deal. However, I do know of players and situations that can completely destroy the fun.

A great example sadly is a series of 3 games I played in what was "matched 5s". In the first game the other teams diamond ranked player was bot lane against me (jinx) and another new player on (Blitz). The diamond player was on Kalista and the matchup was about as unfair as you could ever see. It was also about as much fun as having dental work done without novacaine.

The second time the diamond was top lane as Tryndamere, and the matchup was more even bot lane until the diamond started roaming and ganking every lane. I think I died once when Corki pulled off a very good skill shot, but otherwise the matchup was a good challenge.

The final time the diamond was mid on Katarina and the bot lane was Lucian/Janna. (I played with the same support and same champs for all 3 games). I had built some synergy with Blitz so we were actually having success until Kat started roaming and the match immediate went into "trash mode."

Those were unfun, but it was one specific player, not the game or the champ.

I've had so many other situations where I ended up thinking. "this champ isn't terrible to face". Heck, I'm not a fan of Zed, but I remember having to face him midlane once. I didn't do great, but I held him off until the top and bot lanes started to push and then was able to participate in the team fights. It had been a tough fight, but at the end I could say "I didn't do so badly." For me that was the victory. During the game it was intense, but afterwards I had a slight feeling of accomplishment.

At this point, I simply just find it fun to play against any champion that doesn't have mobility. The way too much mobility thing now really bothers me. I hate not even being able to safely put up wards anywhere since they'll just abuse their mobility to kill me way too easily. It's like you absolutely must stick with the team now unless you have very good pressure on the map so they can't roam around almost at all.

Nameless Voice4 votes

Kind of have to agree with this. I don't mind champions with one mobility move on a decent cooldown, that's fair.

But anyone with more than one mobility move is generally not fun to play against: Diana Fizz Jayce Kalista Kassadin LeeSin Yasuo Zed

VardenSalad3 votes

I would hardly consider Diana to be on the hyper-mobile side of League right now. Easily the fairest listed because she has to set up so many things before going in.

Not soraka. I'm saying this as a semi-former soraka main. I think dodging skill shots can be fun as long as there isn't a constant stream of them. After a point, it becomes an annoyance.

Of course 2 melees going all in at each other is pretty fun too as long as it's a 50-50 fight or close to that. Two tanky bruisers wailing on each other is pretty fun. If it wasn't, we wouldn't have wrestling, boxing, or MMA.
