Help an S7 jg noob?

Rux100··1 votes·1,036 views

I have no clue how to jg and I would like to. I have posted for help in the past but that was way before S7 when there were no plants, every camp gave a buff of some kind, devourers was still a thing, yada yada yada.

Who's good to start out with? What paths are good for what circumstances? What's the difference in gameplay between the suggested starting champs? Any tubers that play-by-play their games in detail so I can learn some basics?

About me: I currently main ADC, I play mostly Jhin and Ezreal, so I'm pretty good at skillshots. My playstyle is patient (some would say passive, I disagree. I'm just a precise kind of player, I hate to go in half-cocked) and never over-aggressive; I don't like to chase kills longer than 4-5 seconds unless the minimap provides clear proof that I can, but even then I feel like I'm wasting time chasing something I probably wont get. I love warding, it is a passion of mine from my support-main days, so junglers who do well with the trackers knife OR who can afford the room for the SS would be nice for me, I think. These details are just me at the moment, obviously I'll have to change my gameplay from ADC to jg, but these are here to recommend good starting junglers for me personally. Once I get the hang of basics I can move on, blahblahblah.

Why jungle: I need to learn a second role; I dont wanna be those people "trade with me I only ADC, gg I only ADC". I started out sup main and I don't mind it usually, but we all know 2nd-ing sup means you'll get sup and that's no fun. Mid is another hard carry lane, and I want my second to be different than my primary (to get a different perspective, you know). I do want Top, but not at this time: Top and ADC are the hardest roles to climb the low elo ladder with, so I will give up top just for now (this is a me problem I know, I don't like to play carrys in the top lane, I like Poppy and Shen and Naut, so yea).

Please ask questions if you have them. Thank you for all the feedback! :D

Edit: I understand what the plants do and the difference between red & blue buff, and that stuff, what I mean to ask for is in relation to clear paths, when to & not to gank or invade, more decision-based-gameplay-in-the-jungle kind of stuff.

Your secondary should be mid. The play style of most junglers is so different from ADC that you'll literally be starting from nothing. Mid is similar in that you're used to being a backline carry already as an ADC. Also, learning the ins and outs of jungling are a bitch. You will also get flamed for everything being a jungler. Additionally, mid lane right now is probably the best lane to carry from.

That being said, play ivern/nunu if you're dead set on jungling. Seems like you like that support nonsense.

...support isnt nonsense... [zombie-nunu-tears]

And god I hate nunu I've tried him and he just makes me angry all the way around, his abilities his avatar in game, even his voice annoys me (sorry nunu mains, he just does not appeal to me)

golem vs brambleback is all about if your champion has magic based damage or physical based damage.

raptors grants a lot of gold from lots of weak mobs - if you have aoe's this is your gold mine.

wolves grant the most xp.

gromp is a heavy hitting slow ranged attacker with a lot of hp. if you're a champion with sustain built into your kit, but not a lot of aoe effects this is your starting point.

krugs are annoying and best for someone with crowd control and aoe effects and range. you can kite them as long as you dont run too far away

skuttle crab is for protecting drake and baron while granting you some health in return. early on it's a great target for squishier champions with more movement and damage. if your leash goes wrong consider taking skuttle crab.

drakes are different based on their element. fire drake deals heavy damage, cloud drake is pretty weak, ocean drake will slow your movement, mountain drake has better resistance. i cant remember which, but one of them does a cone basic attack instead of a single target basic attack.

rift herald grants a buff that lasts roughly half of the game and grants extra damage when alone.

blast cones are mini ziggs satchel charges that affect everyone within range when it explodes. you can make it explode by basic attacking it.

the plant in the river drops 5 orbs that heal and recover mana but slow the players movement. - skuttle crab will try to eat them if you dont basic attack it to scare it away.

the blue plant works like old clairvoyance did, but in a cone wave instead of an aoe ring.

Thank you for this information, it appears I was a tad off in explaning my desire. I understand what the plants do and the difference between red & blue buff, and that stuff, what I meant to ask for was in relation to clear paths, when to & not to gank, more decision-based gameplay in the jungle kind of stuff. The bit about the actual xp and health details were new to me though, so thank you. I also tend to take scuttle right away, but it seems it was a wasted effort if I have plenty of health or if the mid didnt plan to roam anytime soon. I almost always avoid krugs, just because of how annoying and time-consuming they are...

Again, this information WAS helpful, so thanks :D

the information i gave you about the camps is actually a bit deeper than you might realize. it's all in relation to your base stats. that's for both sides of the map.

if you cant take a camp then avoid it. that's how you know when and where to map your path. krugs requires a very special champion. nasus, chogath, and nunu handle krugs quite well.

it's faster to go over the river. it's safer to go over the lane.

if you need a leash start at the buffs. if you dont need a leash start at wolves and then go gromp and then skuttler then if you think it's there and you can take it and get away take your opponents red. if not then go back to your blue.

raptors are great for champs like amumu, karthus, mundo, mordekaiser, graves, etc. if you're playing as a champion that's similar to those get a leash on your buff and take that camp with close to max hp and 2 potions in case something happens you werent expecting. take skuttler crab afterwards and then your opponents buff and recall because if you can handle raptors early you can handle pretty much any camp.

Do you know any champs that excel with the tracker's knife or will still do well with a SS? Noone in low elo likes to ward, I feel its a must with the jungle

BLACK REALM GOD1 votes

actually i love trackers knife. and honestly the jungler has an easier time warding than support simply because you have freedom to roam.

i build trackers knife on every champ i jungle, but ivern and reksai are two that can greatly benefit from it. lee sin can as well.

Rux1001 votes

is it not true though the Ivern, Rek-sai, and Lee Sin are all high-skillcap champions? For someone new to the jungle, is there an easier champ just to get used to the jungle who would also do nicely without red/blue smite?

BLACK REALM GOD1 votes

the jungle is a high skill cap zone. if you can micro manage your own side of the jungle, keep up with the enemy jungler, and provide support to your lanes then you're pretty skilled as is. that's a level of situational awareness that most players simply do not have.

but okay yeah fine there are some lower skill champs that you might be able to play with trackers knife but the thing is a champions difficulty directly relates to their power in most cases.

amumu and nunu come to mind.

yea, obviously, an easy to play champion should typically be somewhat less useful than a high-skillcap champion. Should be. Like Yi or Garen, great for learning the game and maybe climbing through silver (maybe) but beyond that... eh... and I say should be because, well... some of us remember Darius a few seasons ago, pros were using him for pentas... yea that was a tad broken, just a tad. Or when Aphromoo used Sona to win games at MSI, yea just a tad :P

Great meta now though, only thing I dont like is the AP poke supp, I like the old tanks or heals, I hate zyra/brand/malz supps T.T

Anyway thank you, you're quite helpful. Do you jg main?

BLACK REALM GOD1 votes

nope. i play fill.

A little tip when you're counter jungling, is when you're taking the raptors and the enemy jgler's away, kill all of it EXCEPT for the large one. While you'll be losing a bit of experience and gold for not clearing the big one, the small raptors WILL not spawn again unless the big one is killed. So when the enemy do try to clean raptors, they'll be greeted with a camp that's basically empty and they'll lose some experiences. It's better if you manage to get the red buff too.
