How to play Gangplank?

I have been playing Gangplank for a while but I have been having alot of trouble actually being good with him. I have been running attack speed and crit on him but should I be focusing on straight up attack power instead of crit? I understand the proper way to use his powder kegs and i usually try to play it safe but whenever someone finds a way to get in close I just get destroyed. What is the best way to use gangplank stat wise?

I did find out that rushing "Trinityforce" with the sheen first is the way to go and then going for an infinity edge, the goal is to deal tons of damage with Q and survive long enough to put as many of them out as you can.
