Is there a problem champion Grading system? Rioter's appreciated

Lord Galvatron··19 votes·2,265 views

I have played Sion for 3 days straight and I have gotten only 2 S ranks total. I recently played a game in which I went 10/0/20 with 162 Cs and have a 79% Kill participation. I get an S-.

The really frustrating thing here is that I went 9/0/11 in a previous game yesterday with a little more Cs and I got a S. Is there a e-mail I can contact a Rioter for this? I am completely baffled by this, and I have heard numerous complaints from other people about the same problem I have.

EDIT: I tried to send a support ticket to Riot but it just told me to make a post. If I don't see any headway I'll send an e-mail directly to a Rioter who deals with the upkeep of the Champion mastery system.

EDIT #2: I successfully sent a e-mail to the Riot support crew and we will see what will happen, I have had a problems similar to what I'm dealing with now so hopefully It will be resolved.

It sucks that RIOT has not been more clear as to the requirements to get the ratings you want.

To my understanding, the rating is NOT a simple equation that says, "this KDA / participation / cs etc... = this rating". It is much less about the raw numbers you achieved and more closely tied to how those numbers compare to other players, on that champ, in that role.

So if your playing SION top and got 10/0/20 with 162cs and 79% kill participation and only get an S-, that means there are enough players also playing SION top at your skill level performing better than that (overall) to qualify for an S or S+.

However, I have noticed that mostly good kill participation and, more importantly, objective participation go a VERY long way into getting better scores. There have been plenty of times where I kill farmed for like 15/3/20 and only got an A+ or S-, but other times where I've like 5/2/12 but killed 4 turrets and was present for drag and baron kills, most team fights, and got an S or S+.

So I'd say the system is designed to score you for teamwork and objective control more than anything, and the actual rating you receive is based on how good that score compares to your peers (same champ, same role, same skill level.

I really hate the grading system as a support. Unless you play like an absolute god, you're not getting even an S- unless you did not die a single time during a game which means you have to play pretty selfishly which contradicts the entire fucking purpose of the role. If you die more than twice, you're NOT getting anything higher than an A+period.

If I can die but in doing so I can save two or more teammates which not only prevents two deaths, but scores us an Ace, I should be rewarded for making that play -- not barred from ever getting an S-rank and would have been given a better score by not doing anything.

your not supporting or clearing enough wards, I get my highest grades as support

doiminat0r36002 votes

your not supporting

Well, first of all, you're*. Second of all, How do you define support? Is it someone that peels for the carry, someone that wards for the carry, someone that keeps morale high, or all 3?

I define it as all 3 (as a support main who takes the job very seriously). I can literally clear 2 wards in a 40 minute game and get an S. Why? I have no idea because it is a weird system for supports. You can't get an S unless you take atleast one kill or get over 70% kill participation. The system makes no real sense, especially for supports.

ward kills arn't being applied to S ranks, only CS, Kills, and deaths/assists

your not supporting or clearing enough wards, I get my highest grades as support

Definitely not always the case. I usually always get oracle lens and I'm always constantly warding, usually always having 3/3 wards filled and always buying a pink ward.

For me, I play the vision game far more than I do anything else. So much so that sometimes it's my downfall occasionally because I'm roaming too much.

I don't know how many wards placed and cleared needs to be given, but in one particular game I remember doing, I like to think clearing (and/or spotting) 10+ wards, placing 60+ (not including pinks which was probably around 7 or 8), was at almost every single objective, and participating in at least 75% of the team's overall kills would warrant at least a S-. But no, I got an A- because I died 4 times, even though three of those deaths was a sacrifice to where I died to keep healing my teammates as Soraka even when I reached below 25% HP because they would have died without that extra healing. Every team fight most allies would be alive with fewer than 200~500 HP remaining.

And yet I've seen other people go 11/6/6, barely do any vision control, and still get S because they're playing a different champion. It's a good score but they did not play AMAZING, which is what an S rank should be for.

If you're going to make a grading system, it needs to be consistent all throughout. It can't be really forgiving on one champion and then needing to require a literal perfect game on another to achieve the same score. In my case, I haven't gotten an S- in MONTHS, even though I may be considered the MVP by both my team and even the enemy team alike in some games. Yet, the people who I helped support get their S ranks even though they only achieved those ranks thanks to me playing well in the first place. You have no idea how obnoxious, how degrading, how insulting it is, when nearly your entire team scores an S rank or at least an A+ and yet I get a B+ because how dare I die a few times in a 55 minute long game with numerous team fights; in a game where everyone including the enemy team was complimenting you. It's a fucking slap in the face. Playing support isn't always an easy role so I don't know why it's always so harshly graded as if it was; and the way it grades already contradicts how a player should actually play the role in the first place.

The system is shit. It's about as reliable at grading performance as the death recap is at giving correct information on what actually killed you. If my class average was only 15% for a test, yet I scored a 50%, I should not get an A++ and a pat on the back for that because I did so much better than everyone else. 50% is still a really bad score and I shouldn't feel proud of that. In the same vein, I should not get an F and a scolding if I scored 93% on a test when the class average was 100%.

I've gotten an S rank on Soraka and it was by no means easy. In that game, I got 2/0/12. However, I think some of the oddities that I did might have helped boost my rank.

It was a 23 minute game, I healed over 11k damage, I placed 17 wards, cleared 4, placed 3 vision wards, got some minions, and a neutral camp minion.

You are doing it wrong. If you want S+ you need to play your supports mid your mid top your top support your jungler bot and your adc jungle.

ClapDatAshe1 votes

In a Janna game I played recently, I got an S while having two deaths. Then again, I DID assist my ADC's pentakill, so... Eh.

I get S' fairly often. My advice is CS like a legend (works a TON unless you're support) Have good kill participation, and plenty plenty plenty of objective control. Assisting takedowns of inhibs, turrets (etc) help by miles. KDA matters, but keep these things in mind while playing. GLHF [slayer-jinx-catface]

I went 1-0-21 with Nami in a 21 minute game and got an A. The system isn't support friendly unless you are playing something off-meta.

Mazariamonti2 votes

I just chalk it up to luck and laugh when I get a high grade when i deserved lower and an A when I felt I deserved higher.

On a somewhat related note, I think the play of the game feature is arguably worse in overwatch than the grading mechanic in LoL. Some loser junkrat player will kill three people with his stupid ultimate, lose the game anyway, and be rewarded with a 'play of the game', at least in LoL the people who end up getting S's are usually players who clearly played well to some degree, the LoL system just sometimes is a little inconsistent.

Agreed, however the reasons why I am addressing this is because it is obstructing my progress to get a Lv 7 champion mastery. I found it a joke to get to lv 6, but for some strange reason it is impossible for me to get S ranks in some games and not in some when the times I do better overall I get a lower grade. It's gotten to the point that the champion mastery/grading is bugged and is denying me lv 7 tokens. For example:

I got a S+ on Tahm Kench Jg I got 87 Cs and my KDA is 9/2/13, at the time I was like "whaaaa???".

Yesterday, I play a Jg Sion game and I go 11/0/19 and have 106 cs I get 2nd most gold in the game. In that game a get a S- denying me a lv 7 token. My friend who played Nami that game gets the same grade I do and he essentially memed the entire game until the last 5 min of the game where we destroyed the enemy team and we win the game. This is EXTREMELY frustrating because this has happened to me before and the issue was resolved. Unfortunately this time I had to send a support ticket in addition to making a post and hopefully it won't get filed away.

I haven't managed to get an S rank on a lot of my adcs as of recent. I used to get S or S- consistently but now Im lucky to get an A+. Its really annoying, I only have 2 mastery tokens, and theyre on different champs... :(

For champions with a primary tank role, I believe damage taken weighs more than damage dealt or your score to the rating system. I think it checks that stat, and compares it to the average of Sion players in the region. Correct me if I'm wrong but thats how I think it works

Lord Galvatron1 votes

Maybe, I'm not sure I've done the same thing i've been doing and got a S playing worse then the game I just played. And I front lined a ton that game.

Lord Galvatron1 votes

Yep, confirmed its broken, just did a Jg Tank Sion, 41K damage taken 11/0/19 KDA 106 cs.

RIOT NEEDS TO FIX THIS! I will not have my skill and work converted into RNG.

CC Mustang1 votes

Part of it is how your team mates do. If you dominate but none of your team mates do your more likely to get an S. If 1 or 2 other team mates are 9 and 1 or something like that it is harder to get an S.

Lord Galvatron1 votes

I'm not sure if thats the case, wouldn't it mean that they would be multiple S? I have dominated in games where I was the only one doing well, I carry the team and I get no S. Merritt I have gotten S's before but I did even better in later games And I have gotten worse scores. It's gotten to a point that Riot rly needs to fix this because they are screwing over people who are using the mastery system and Hextech crafting.

CC Mustang1 votes

From personal experience i find that to be the case. Although there is some randomness. I got an S- going 14 13 10 and 250 cs on a zed. Ive also seen a kindred get an S+ for going 14 12 18 with something like 200 cs

Parceval1 votes

Fairly certain that's irrelevant. Especially since I've had several games where the whole team received an S. Again, I reiterate my previous point. Pay attention to gold. If the amount of gold you have for a game of X length is high, that seems to be a very big indicator.

Fusarix1 votes

Yeah grading system can be a bit random. Hopefully any standing issues get fixed soon

Parceval1 votes

I believe it is highly related to gpm. That is, if you don't have enough gold (cs is a big part there) then you're not far enough off the statistical average to earn an S.

Lord Galvatron1 votes

I played sion jg and got a ton of gold, I already got 2 S tokens and both those games I did worse then the game I recently played (9/0/11 and got less gold then the prev games and that game I got a S rank), I rly hope I can get in contact with an employee about this.

DorkunedAuras1 votes

playing off meta is far, far, far easier to get those ranks.

This is why I'm looking forward to when they add a review feature to your grade. From what it looks like to me, each class of champ as a unique grading scale with it's own goals to get a better grade. The problem is that there is no way to know what that grade scale is for sure. It could be that you didn't help with enough objectives, could be you stayed out of one to many team fights, who knows. Till they add that feature to read what you they are grading you on and how much each criteria affect your grade, it's just guesswork as to what went wrong. I will say it that even the smallest objective missed seems to be able to take your grade from an S- to an A+.

I've read reports of longer games having negative effects on one's grade.

Yes, they definetly do. i played a game as vayne, went 1/1/6 with 56 cs in a 13:51 minute game and got an S-. they had an open mid since their jungler dc'ed :/

I agree in the fact that right now the grading system is broken. All the system seems to see are stats and that's not how a game is played. I just got done with an Ezreal ADC game. Went 13/0-7 with 89 CS. I understand my cs was bad which is why I most like got an A rating, but I was busy farming the champions that kept coming down into my lane. Game ended almost exactly after 20 minutes when they surrendered. I helped with 4 towers, 2 dragons, and one inhib. In my eyes I think I did everything an ADC needed to do in the situation but still can't get an S because I didn't farm minions enough when I was helping objectives?

Atronthor1 votes

Sometimes I wonder why people get an S+. Today a Volibear had a S+ in my team. And his statistics were not that impressive. But I get very often a S- or S. Until now I had never a S+. I dont know how Riot calculate it. But in the majority of the cases the system works decent. If you played well you get often a very good grade. Sometimes I played very well but get only an A or something like that. But such an automatic system can not be perfect.

Lord Galvatron1 votes

Yea idk how the grading system works sometimes, i've had games in which I have cleared house as Sion and got a worse grade then gams where I basically did less of everything. I had a problem like this with Vlad and I believe either it was a bug or a actual Riot employee changed my in game grade afterwards. I got a S+ on Tahm Kench for basically monkey around and soaking up dmg. and it's rly frustrating when you do that as a other champion and you go something like 10/0/20 and you get the same grade as the enemy Jg.

Elewd1 votes

to get an S you basically just have to farm really really well, i got an S on a game as toplane Zyra and i had 0 kills 3 deaths and like 15 assists, but i had 380 farm because i went zzrot/banner of command toplane and just got a ton of farm.

The grading system is ridiculously broken. Most people just acknowledge it and laugh at this point after the game is over.

MunchCrunchLunch1 votes

unless we get the criteria from riot we can't say anything for sure. but we need them

Electric Buyers1 votes

Does it stand to reason the requirements for an S rank fluctuate? Considering it is a grade of how you do among all players of that champ around your skill level?

LankPants1 votes

The system over prioritises farm. The optimal way to get high grades is to split and farm all game and ignore your team while killing your lane opponent over and over. This is an utterly horrible optimal case because it's the worst way to utilise a lead in most games.

What I think the system needs is a check where it treats kills/assists on enemies outside of your lane and objective takes and assists as bonus CS, so if you start snowballing you can play a control/pressure game and have a chance of getting a S.

An example of this would be kills/assists out of your lane counting as 3 CS and objective assists/takes as 6, this would mean that if I TPed bot and got a kill+assist then helped Dragon the system would view that as the equivalent of taking 2 waves of CS and add 12 CS to my endgame total CS for the grading system. In this way you encourage players to help their team rather than just mindlessly farming to keep up a CS score.

Parceval1 votes

Yep, agreed. It wayyy over prioritizes easy statistically measures for them (i.e. gold).

It should take into account the locations upon which you're acquiring your kills, and even the magnitude of the gold swing immediately following your deaths. Especially as a support where a clever sacrifice can win you the game.
