Mages need love. (NO MORE SHIELDS RIOT)
I rarely ever see Taliya, Twisted fate, Orianna, Kennen, Anivia, Ivern, Karthus, Gragas. Others, I see here and there at least, but these guys? Maybe 1 in 100 games. So why are the rarest picks mostly in the mage-class? It's because there's far too much AP counter in this game to justify their selections. Anyone who has a shield with a cooldown can block anyone who has an ability with a cooldown. Only AA heavy champs don't have that obstacle really, or spammy damage like Aphelios. So anyone that relies on burst, or ability damage will be negated heavily by a shield. This means that shields are strongest against mages.
How many shields there are in this game is absolutely ridiculous.
Count how many shields the champions have in a given game. I've played games where almost every champion has had a shield ability.
Some also take barrier, and can basically double their health by activating their shield+barrier. That's so excessive.
Like stop. Not every champion needs a bloody shield.
Silences were removed from so many champions, I think it's only Garen, Malzahar, and Soraka who have silences now.
But how many have shields?
Kassadin, Riven, Sion, Mordekaiser, Yasuo, Ekko, Lux, Janna, Malzahar, Galio, Nocturne, Lee sin, Diana, Thresh, Morgana,
The list goes on, and I bet Sett will have one too.
You could consider cassiopeia's venom thing to be a silence to some extent. I just don't see why silences were so bad, but having a hundred shields is considered okay. I'd rather be silenced, unable to use my abilities, than use my abilities, waste my mana, and deal absolutely no damage.
To counter shields, maybe mages should get some way to bypass the shield with their damage, or maybe some shields should block AD only. You can't have every champion (even some mages) be mage counters. Come on.
It's like a go-to. A kit filler for when they can't think of an ability that a champion should have. "Let's give him a shield" - oh great, let's add them to the never ending list of champions with shields. Another reason not to play a mage.
