Lux needs some love

I have been playing Lux as my main since the first year LOL was released. She was once overpowered and nerfed to balanced. However, with so many new mobile champions becoming the meta, Lux is hardly viable in competitive level. She excels in team fight, which is totally fine. The worst part is her laning phase. Her ability to wave clear, roam, harass(yes), escape, and snowball is inferior, especially during early game.

  1. Wave clear Her wave clear is slower than most mids. Zed, Yasuo, Xerath, Katarina, Orianna, Sydra, Lissandra are played by me a lot. These are all frequently played champions recently. Some of them don't even spend mana. Lux cannot wave clear fast enough to keep minions out of turret range facing most other mids. In addition, her mana depletes rapidly if spells are used to catch up wave clear, and that is still slower than most others.

  2. Roam Lux has no mobility. She has to walk to other lanes without acceleration, blink, dash, or teleport. The opponents can react fast enough even without any wards in the river. Mid-laner responds for ganking top and bot when you try to carry the team. Lux has no presence that causes significant threat to other lanes. Not to mention the wave clear problem which costs her waves of minions for an attempt of difficult gank which is likely to fail. Lissandra and Xerath may have the same problem. Their skills are much easier to land compared to Lux. Plus they can wave clear efficiently even with no strong items.

  3. Harass Lux cannot harass frequently before getting her Charlice. Even if she has enough mana, her poke is easily dodged or mitigated. All spells that provide mobile spells, shields, healing can mitigate her damage due to her long cooldown. She doesn't have a poke as reliable and short cooldown as Orianna and Syndra, who don't have any disadvantages of Lux listed in this post.

The range of her E is also problematic. Non-mobile champions like Xerath, Ziggs don't even have to get close to poke. They don't have to worry about missing Q once, because it's up again after a few seconds. Yet it's easier to land and deals more damage. Considering how slow the projectile speed of Lux's E, any experienced player can side step dodge effortlessly. The only way is to make it effective is to stand closer to reduce the travel time. This would however put her into a very dangerous risk against assassin mid, and gank from enemy jungler. Besides, even getting closer to non-assassin mids is impossible against champions that poke you miles away. Think of Xerath, Ziggs and Syndra. You have to take a bunch of damage before having a chance because Lux has to literally WALK towards them. The only strategy is try to hit a Q magically so then you can land your E.

I still remember the time where Lux was considered the unique poke mage. Now, there is a bunch of other champions that poke in a much safer distance and reliable hit rate.

I believe there are some possible changes that help her a bit.

  1. Increase the projectile speed of her E. It should make her poke much more reliable, or;

  2. Reduce mana cost of E. To compensate for the shooting average, or;

  3. Double her second shield amount if it hits only her. Not changed when a teammate touches the shield. It should help her survivability against mobile deadly assassin.

TL:DR: Lux's team fight is great, but her laning phase sucks too much, preventing her from growing strong enough to be relevant in team fights. Bronze and Silver are the only places she shines because no one dodges skills anyway.

I've played Lux a lot recently (against gold+ opponents) and am preparing her as one of my mains for s5, I don't usually have mana issues (I go tear + morellos). Please don't give her mobility or lower her cooldowns too much, I love Lux because she doesn't feel like such a bullshit mage like how ziggs feels sometimes, she actually has to think about when and where to use spells, mana actually means something in her case. Also she can't escape freely, IF you get to her you have a good chance of killing her, play and outplay. She's one of the best examples of a healthy, skill-based champion. Same reasons I love Anivia and veigar, old champs in general (I loved old Xerath)

Though some small buffs like e projectile speed would be nice without making her overpowered, these include (in my opinion, as is this whole post)

  • A minor projectile speed buff on e and/or w

  • A minor autoattack range increase to help proc her passive (though this isn't really needed)

  • If you really want more mobiity than maybe a minor movespeed increase

  • A minor (like 0.1 or smth) ratio increase on either q, e or r

Of course these shouldn't all be done, but one or maybe two of the above could help her.

She doesn't need any buffs. Being able to nuke a team for 1.4k+ damage with 2 abilities when both are very spammable is already almost broken strong.

The shield should be FUCKING DELETED, replaced by a high dmg skill...she should feel mage, or move her ass to bot lane and support with that pussy ass shield. Also, I've only tried lux a total of three times, felt that her combo was so slow due to her passive being a big part of her dmg...maybe if you make her passive something sustainy and her shield a dmg spell...

Her shield is what keeps her alive. It can't be replaced with a pure damage spell because she gets instakill by any assassin in the game otherwise. Unless you make it attached with some sort of CC.

Mages all need to die faster...#zhonyaOP. Talon doesn't have silence anymore, Zed can be outplayed so easily, Fizz can't even touch you without burning his E to gapclose, Katarina just gets raped by everyone in lane, and Yasuo....he's just shit now.

It shows with the rest of that statement. e-q-r-aa-epop-aa takes all of about 2 seconds.

Epilogue of Life1 votes

two aa alone should take more than 2 seconds...full AP mage with over 1.0 AS?

Pinker 101 votes

2.67 seconds. Fine. point is if it seems slow, youre doing it wrong.

If you need the second aa, unless it's a tank, you're also doing it wrong.

she doesn't need another damage spell.

that shield is fuckin awesome.

That shield is fucking annoying for everyone but Lux herself. I wish there would be more aggressive, all-in oriented mages that actually HAVE risk...

Lux's shield is good for learning skillshots, because teammates ignited with 10hp don't know how to stand still. And then there's the moving back and forth or even flashing to catch that rebound shield on teammates.

Back in S2, she used to be able to spam all three skills consistantly, with a 24s ult. Kind of crazy, but it made her pretty strong.

Her skills were never spammable. True about her ult though. Her ult now isn't the problem for me anyway.

Lux doesn't belong in the mid lane anymore, she can be played support, but to be honest there are much better picks.

Lux doesn't need damage buffs because as long as this is the League of Mobility she is going to be out classed in almost every role.

What could bring back Lux would be more Utility in her kit.

There are ZERO reasons why her E / Q shouldn't reveal stealthed units like Twitch / Akali Her shield could give a MS buff / or turn grant a moment of invisibility itself. (just read her lore, it mentions her ability to mess with light)

Her Ult Hitbox takes some serious getting used to as well.

Her passive while a nice damage early usually isn't worth getting that close to auto attack, you'll probably just get insta gibbed.

i strongly disagree. I main lux mid, and i can proudly say that she is still good mid lane. Her immobility just means she should be played more cautiously.

Just because she lacks mobility doesn't mean she sucks

She sucks because of the meta, in which pretty much every meta mid is countering lux. You can read my post for some examples.

From my experience shes does pretty well against Zed, Katarina, and Akali. Obviously, Yasuo is a hard match-up though if he is dumb or wastes his wind wall hes an easy few kills.

Maybe its just me with the "Being Good with a certain Champion can take you anywhere" kinda thing, but based from experience shes super underrated

From my experience in plat, a good zed never gives you opportunity to poke unless he's dumb. Everytime your throw a Q or E, he can blink to you to mitigate half of your damage potential. If you do nothing, he can constantly Q and Q to poke you. After getting anything lifesteal, he continues to ignore your occasional poke by healing back.

Katarina I agree to a certain extent, but only if Kat is stupid to try to engage on you. A good Kat can wave clear much faster than you then roam to bot lane and snowball.

Akali? Does anyone play her mid in ranked? She is more like a top laner now.

I would say in the current meta Orianna and Fizz are the only ones Lux can beat during laning phase in equal condition, unless the enemy jg keeps coming. However, if you count in JG gank, Lux is extremely vulnerable against them, while they can just ball out or jump out safely against gank.

She doesn't "Suck"

She is just very high risk with very low reward.

You have to land all your skill shots just to match the same kind of damage that Ryze / Annie / Katarina / SOOOO many more mages get with targeted abilities.

If you constantly land them then you can do some damage, but you just can't land them every time, especially since riot start giving every champion a short dash / way to block them.

Don't get me wrong I LOVE Lux, I mained her for a good chunk of last season, and climbed from Silver V to Gold V with her as support.

She just isn't as good as the other meta picks right now. At least not in solo Q.

Not sure if serious. I played her for shiggles in teambuilder the other day and it was pretty faceroll. I didn't really understand her powerspikes and wound up dying few times, but I think if I played her a lot that she would be like ap nid. No excuse for dying.

Did you try her beyond gold in ranked?

I faceroll NG as well, not in ranked. I am currently plat in Taiwan server.

And no, AP Nid is nothing like her. I don't even want to argue about this. I doubt you actually read what I wrote.

Her power spikes are ult, rab, lich, and max e

to the other response to this,

even thats difficult.

She is definitely weaker than some champions, however she is not entirely without a few strengths.

  1. She has extremely long range
  2. She very high burst and can potentially 100-0 a target from 1000 range
  3. She has a lot of utility

Her biggest weakness overall is her very long cooldowns and as a result generally low DPS. She is kind of high risk high reward, in that if you land everything you can insta kill a target however if you miss you're extremely vulnerable for quite a long time.

However i really dont see her issues being resolved without a mini rework of 1-2 abilities or her passive.

I've been playing lux recently as well. I love her kit and I do share similar thoughts and opinions. Personally, I would prefer the lower mana cost on E buff. That allows her to compete a little bit better with other long range mages (Ziggs, xerath, syndra and Orianna) also, you don't run into the old Gragas q issue where it was almost impossible to dodge. I'd rather see Luxes E be pretty easily dodgable rather than an automatic hit.

Give her full mobility with all of her skills and making everything feel smoother would step her up.

i have found that taking TP over ignite on Lux is pretty good. Shes a champion who should never get up close if it can be helped, and TP helps with her immobility and roams issues

I would rather say, Teleport is her ONLY option. And Flash of course.

I didn't mention it because common sense.

CV is better than TP / Ignite.

I used to run it exclusively on her mid lane, You pick up crazy kills when people stop half way at turret to back to base.

Its also amazing at helping your jungler or lighting up buffs / steal buffs / dragons.

I haven't played her lately though.

She needs more utility. -Make her shield have no cast time (she can move while casting it) -Make her passive reveal units who are afected by it. -Increase her ult damage, only because i love the skill. -Make her E deal extra damage to minions.

-Alternatively, revert her last set of nerfs.

I think her laning is actually in a pretty good place. I don't have a problem with her E or her shield. But her late game on the other hand is little weak.

LightET1 votes

I main Lux mid and i'm doing pretty good with her. Yes, she does lack mobility but she has long range and good poke. You just need to play safe and ward well. Lux shines in team fights and mid/late game.

Playing against her counters (Zed,yasuo) is really tough especially in lane, but if you just focus on farming you can catch up in team fights.

I feel like Lux is still a great pick and her snares/ults can really change a game if you can land them properly.
