Why I Consider Quitting League

Let me preface this post by saying that I am in no way trying to complain about the people who help develop the game or the way the game is played. I am merely finding somewhere to put my thoughts on the state of the game and it's community, and hopefully some other players can relate to how I see it. Maybe this should be on a different board, I'm not sure. Anyway, on to my topic.

I started playing League about 2 years ago (Preseason 6). My friends and I were looking for a game to play and one of them suggested League. Over the past 2 years, we enjoyed competing against each other to see who could rank up the highest. Fast-forward and we are all around silver elo (I peaked at silver 1). When we first started, the community was slightly harsh, but not too unbearable. It was okay to make a few mistakes and still go without being flamed by your teammates. And it was okay to play a game without having to "/mute all". Now, I cannot say that the same is still true for season 8.

League is a lot less enjoyable. No longer can you play anything "fun" such as off meta picks or off meta builds. If you build even one item off meta or pick anything that doesn't normally fit in that lane, you are flamed to no end for it. Not only are you flamed, you start getting incredulous and ludicrous insults targeted at your mental health, sexuality, self-worth. You can try to utilize the report system, but there is an extreme disconnect between you and those who "review" the report. you have no way of knowing if your report was at least looked at unless you get a feedback message.

Games also just don't feel rewarding to win anymore. They no longer give you IP (Blue Essence) and you've probably went through massive sessions of flaming just to arrive at that victory. Win or lose you still get flamed. I understand that the developers want to make the game more competitive for players, but what about the casual player? What about the person that realizes that League is JUST a game? Making the game overly competitive has changed the mindsets of its players (Even I fell victim to this attitude of over aggression). Something about the "play this way or fail" competitiveness of the game brings out the rage in players. I am not blaming the developers for wanting to make the game competitive because competitive games are fun to play, but making the game overly competitive still has its repercussions.

Even though it has only been 2 years, most of my friends have quit league. The game has become unenjoyable, overly competitive, overly aggressive, and overall unrewarding. I'm not trying to persuade others to join me in quitting League, but hopefully others see my point. Some might argue that it's because I'm in Silver elo that I feel this way, but I don't think it should take a Diamond/Challenger level person to see that the community is toxic. In fact, most League players are in Silver, so if anything, a silver player is probably more likely to know how the community actually is rather than a higher ranked player.

I still did not get to say all that I feel about the game, like how "solo-carrying your team" is near impossible now, but I don't want this post to be too terribly long. Hopefully this post can resonate with others that feel the same even if only on one of my points.

Was Plat 3 seasons in a row, had XXL trouble carrying myself out of low Silver, now the same BS in low Gold. If league wants to be competitive they should instaban people from ranked for a serious amount of time for every single afk, giving up, inting etc.

Since it is super hard to carry alone these days, the game is just over 4vs5. Very frustrating.

Just really take a break off League and come back. When you become obsessed with ranked and only care about rank the game becomes more of a grindy chore.

You can tell when you're ready if you're able to play the game and enjoy it through all the toxicity, losing, and all the other things.

so this is a confusing post.... do you play normals or do you play ranked? if you play ranked then whether u are playing meta or off meta u better understand the champion you're playing, it's strengths, weaknesses, should have a good idea of what the win condition is for your champ and provided you actually have a team, the win condition for the team as a whole. While this is a game and insulting people is not acceptable behavior everyone slips now and then. any type of targeted harassment like the hate speech that flies through this games chat logs on a daily basis should be an instant 14 day ban. same with threats of violence. Fortunately this game has a mode for casual players that do not take the game seriously. In this case Normal 5v5 summoner rift, featured game modes, or Aram are all great options. As far as community health goes, because Riot is lazy and refuses to make reforms this game's community will stagnate and slowly die. (However with fortnite this process is sped up considerably. More accessible and fun game with a development and publishing team that likely cares more.) Examples of things that hurt the community, constantly banning players that rarely use overly toxic comms because they tried to help players on their team use teamwork and their teammates "didn't like it", "know what they're doing", or one my faves "i'm so high right now." Let me be more than clear, that i am rightfully banned and have participated in the past in REAL toxic behavior, hence why I have such valuable insight. Now to portray the other issues, examples include people who purposely make targeted comments with the intention of goading teammates or enemy players into violating summoners code, ban teammates champs, refuse teamwork every single game, sexual harassment, intentionally feeding. These players are rarely if ever even given a 14 day ban let alone a permanent for behaviors obviously intending to ruin another's experience and again while being honest, i can say that this is without doubt true because i have tested this behavior myself. The only thing i have been banned for is toxic behavior. While there's a myriad of other issues Riot is content to ignore these are some of the ones that cause the toxicity in the player base along with no restriction on new players joining ranked such as an extremely large game requirement (2000+) or owning 45-50+ champions etc... These issues will remain however, Riot hasn't cared for a while about anything other than money and that lies with professional play. I enjoy the concept of this game, but I don't think it outweighs the overall negative experience the community and development and managing teams provide. If I upgrade system I will likely leave this game.

Every game has its sore losers. They'll try to find any thing that they can nitpick and point to and say "This is why I am losing, it's not my fault".

League is no different. It's too bad you couldn't handle the vocal minority. This is a pretty good game, and most of the community is actually not like how you describe.

i feel you. I would quit League, too tbh, but I have nothing to compensate for it. And it's really annoying me, been thinking about it for months now

I feel you, I miss being able to experiment with builds. Like building rammus, irelia, tristana, and lots of other champions ap, and it worked. Or ad le blanc, fiddle or brand. Even if it were fewer champions you could build them completely different. Like bloodthirster sword of the occult katarina. Some games ago I had a yasuo top, master yi jungle and sona ashe at bot. I thought to myself. Soraka would be fun midlane. She got decent poke and able to keep our hyper carries alive together with sona later in the game. Ashe raged and told she would troll to. So she went on to pick exhaust and smite, then proceed to steal our yi`s jungle giving our enemies first turret at bot lane and just ruin all the lanes. A long time ago you could have fun with friends going anivia sion bot, or maybe wukong and lee sin or some other stuff. It was even possible to 2v1 in one lane if you wanted a jungler. The game has become less flexible. But I think riot are working on it, trying to open for more options in bot lane. Just wish they did the same with jungle, it is boring that they are forcing smite in the jungle and forcing jungle items.

honestly, i'm over how difficult it is to find friends. i wish they would takes star-crafts idea on communication. its so easy to meet people, everyone is so nice and finding games to practice or play competitive is 100% easier.
