You should not have a disadvantage when playing topside top. If any CC heavy jg comes up from behind when you only have control ward down, you're dead. How do you even avoid just tower farming when you're topside? What's the counterplay to getting double stunned from behind because they played evelynn and you can't even ward against her?
Aside from warding, map awareness has a lot to do with it. Always keep an eye on that minimap along with timing when to be aggressive. Did your opponent goof or burnt their CDs and you can go in for a trade/kill? Do so. Even up at plat people are really bad with baiting people, keep an eye on their movements to see if they're trying to bait you away from your turret. If you see that the enemy jungler is at mid or more preferably, bot side, this means you have some time to be more aggressive in lane. If you're not sure what to do, last hit minions and play defensively until you know where their jungler is.
Also, for Evelynn, you need Pink Wards. Get those.
